Thanksgiving Day Wines 2011
Grapes are 95% Garganega and 5% Trebbiano di Soave (Verdicchio). Curious about what wine to bring for Thanksgiving dinner? The most important consideration is to find a good "food wine" -- especially wines that will pair well with thanksgiving foods like turkey and sweet potatoes that also have that elusive quality of "balance.".

Monte Schiavo at Il Buco
First a little info on Le Marche, located on the Adriatic coast of Italy, the "calf" of the boot, Marche, has been known for its Verdicchio white wine that comes in the familiar green amphora bottle. The region was primarily known for its white wines and the Verdicchio di Matelica has emerged as one with even more character.

Blind Tasting Sancerre vs. White Graves
On first sniff, it could well have been a Vernaccia or Verdicchio from Italy. What better way to spend a summer weekend than by blinding tasting two whites and out of all the whites in the world, analyzing their variety and origin? Of course, this sort of Sherlock Holmes antics is familiar to students in the Master of Wine program.

Coenobium – a hard to pronounce wine made by nuns
The wine in question, Coenobium from the Monastero Suore Cistercensi, is a blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Verdicchio. “Pass some more of the nun wine.. overheard someone say that at the other end of my table recently. Not Blue Nun , mind you. But a wine actually made by nuns!

But there is also something to be said about the simplicity of a white like Verdicchio from Le Marche (look for Sartarelli) that work their magic with the seafood of the Adriatic on a summer day. Like the Quintarelli it possessed layers and depth that I could draw few comparisons to, and definitely had the "what was that?" impact on me.
