| | | VIGNA UVA VINO MAY 7, 2012 Viña Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Here we have a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Colchagua valley in Chile, produced by DOMAINES BARONS DE ROTHSCHILD-LAFITE who took over the Los Vascos estate (Los Vascos meaning The Basques, in honour of its Basque origins) in 1988. There is much going on here for under $10. This wine has a deep and dark ruby red color. | WHY WINE BLOG MAY 6, 2012 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo 2009 I think the best way to describe this wine is just to say that it is an Italian Beaujolais. If opened blind, that is how I would have described it. Aromas of candy cherry licorice with just a hint of smoke. Much like a French Beaujolais on the nose and not much different in the mouth, with a very long fruity finish and a touch of sweetness. | | | | | | | | | -
A WINE STORY | SATURDAY, MAY 5, 2012 Viticulture in Uruguay: A Case Study with Bodega Carrau Viticulture is a key factor in quality grapes. Rules about irrigation differ all over the world. Moreover, the timing of water and heat through the growth cycle determines the quality of the grapes. During my recent visit to Bodega Carrau in Montevideo, I asked Francisco Carrau about the effects of water and heat in the vineyard. MORE >> -
DR. VINO | FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2012 Is the fog of fraud dampening fine wine prices? The arrest of Rudy Kurniawan on March 8 coincided with the top in the fine wine market this year. Wine counterfeiting has been around for decades and I’ve always been surprised that it doesn’t get priced in to the fine wine market (but wines sold directly from the producers do fetch a premium). “Lafite is out, and Conti is in.” MORE >> -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MAY 24, 2012 An Interesting Pairing Featuring Pelaverga The other night I had dinner with a few friends at a favorite Japanese restaurant. This is a place where diners select almost none of the dishes they will eat - the chef chooses, and it is not a sushi place. It's more of a home cooking situation. Well on this night, I experienced a pairing that was completely new to me, and I enjoyed it immensely. MORE >> -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MAY 11, 2012 Sapidity You know how when you're drinking a good Sherry, how one of the things that's so good about it is that strong streak of acidity that runs right down the spine of the wine? I've always appreciated that about Sherry, particularly Finos and Manzanillas, the bright acidity that enlivens the oxidized wine. Doesn't it seem like an acidic wine? And no! MORE >> -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2012 How big is that vineyard? Franzia/Bronco edition Two Buck Chuck turns ten this year. We were reminded that Fred Franzia’s Bronco Wine Co. owns 40,000 acres of vines in the San Joaquin Valley, debt-free , which helps keep the wine price so low. How big is a 40,000 acre vineyard? It’s about 50 times the size of Central Park, and, in fact, about three times the land area of Manhattan. MORE >>
