    Kir-Yianni Paranga 2009
For tonight's pizza I chose a Paranga 'vin de pay de Macedonia' Kir-Yianni 2009, a blend of Xinomavro, Merlot and Syrah. The grapes come from the viticultural area of Agios Panteleimon in Florina in Northwestern Greece that lies at an altitude of 600 meters. Kir-Yianni Paranga is a unique combination of Xinomavro, Merlot and Syrah.

Chateau Tellagh Medea Red Wine 2008
Algeria's viticultural history dates back to its settlement by the Phoenicians and continued under Algeria's rule by the Roman empire. Clairette and Ugni blanc have become the dominate grape varieties with some smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Mouvedre and Syrah. Wine from Algeria! Who would'a thunk.

Visiting the N. Rhone Caveau & Vineyards of M. Chapoutier
Now as we walk along the narrow streets of the pretty village Tain to the Chapoutier vineyards, Jeremy tells us about the viticulture. With the same climate, fruit, viticulture practices and winemaking, the wines are different (as we later taste in the Caveau). chapoutier michel north rhone organic syrah tain wine“Welcome!&#

This week in wine! Palin, college students, perfume, Long Duk Dong
“Why is there sex education and not viticultural education? The syrah will have the line “Oh sexy, girlfriend!&# What a crazy week in wine news! You’d think it was April Fool’s week. You can learn wine too,&# said the author of the study. Described as “Brambly. Floral. It is priced at $320 for 0.25

    Syrah: beyond the fruit bomb
While Merlot’s fall from grace can be traced to one line in the movie Sideways , the fall of Syrah has been more difficult to track. Even more broadly, it’s still a tough sell: producers and retailers have repeatedly told me that save for a few appellations in the Northern Rhone, the homeland of the grape, Syrah remains a sluggish category.

    Arboleda Carmenère 2006
First released in 1999, Arboleda wines are made from fruit grown under strict sustainable viticultural practices from their best vineyards in the most prestigious viticultural regions of Chile. Wish I had a nice Canadian wine tonight so I could toast the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team on their winning of the Gold medal. Wine Acidity: 5.31

Natural wines, premox, chenin blanc, 07 Port and Rhone – John Gilman
When it comes to organic and biodynamique viticulture, the vast majority of what I see here is very positive for the overall elevation of the quality of the wines produced by these methods, but again, if one is a vigneron pursuing this direction, it seems to me that it still behooves one to not get too zealous or puritanical in one’s approach.

Screwcaps, scores, riesling, the Loire, Cali cab: John Gilman part two
The lower tier wines are better, as they simply do not ripen as well, but the best sites are just not turning out great wines to my palate in the top vintages with the current viticultural and winemaking methodologies. John has offered a free issue from his backlist to any Dr. Vino reader so surf on over to his site and check it out.

Wine starts in the Vineyard - Golan Heights Winery
Of particular interest was the 2003 Yarden Syrah - a big California style Syrah with dark fruit, this concentrated wine with big soft tannins will coat your palate and leave you with a nice long finish.  Made a trip back up to the Golan Heights today.  I even got to take a trip up a row of vines on a mechanical harvester.

    Blending Wines.
I'm headed up North tomorrow to the Galil region which includes the highly regarded Galil & Golan Heights viticultural sections. We were playing with 3 varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah & Sangiovese.  Has it only been a week?  I have 6 days left, but I know that will fly.  Can't wait! This too surprised them.

Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas
Shes against what she calls Big Wineviticulture as business and technologyand blames the shrinking appreciation for hand-vinified, long-aged Old World wines (like the Barolo that eventually led to her career) on, among other things, the UCDavis School of Enology and Viticulture and the wine writings of critic Robert M.

In conferences dominated by scientists, biodynamics in particular provokes sneers, but Jose Ramon Lissarague a professor of viticulture in Madrid said he agreed. In any relationship, man and grape or man and man (or woman) if you force a situation, more often than not viticultural or emotional disaster follows. That seems obvious.

Runnin' To The Mailbox For Ventana Syrah
am still a bit confused) he had had enough with fighting and studying so him and his wife bought some land and dove into viticulture. Interestingly enough the red in the package this month was a syrah. was about to pop a bottle of boutique Monterey syrah. After the pinotage blend it was time for the 2003 Ventana syrah.
