I have often heard, or even said it myself, that when it comes to good wine, price really does not matter. But, will that 90+ rated $50 wine be worth a +$45 to you. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2010 Noodles in NYC - it's Not Just Ramen At Lamb Noodle Soup in the Golden Shopping Mall food court, 41-28 Main Street in Flushing, it is aromatic and very clean tasting, and yet deeply lamb-y. As much as we all love ramen, there are other delicious noodle soups to be had in NYC. Consider Ph? the Vietnamese dish. Vietnamese fermented fish sauce. My favorite ph? Things sped up here. -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2010 HOW TO: bring wine onboard a plane Domestically, there are a few wine shops beyond security, such as the chain of Vino Volo locations or the Yadkin Valley wine shop in Charlotte, that sell wine to go. If there’s one thing that frustrates wine enthusiasts when traveling by air–and, no, we’re not including pat-downs–it’s the liquids ban. -

WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2010 Regional Wine Week 2010 First, I do not understand the fact that Shirley had to visit five wine shops in the Tribeca and Soho areas of Manhattan before finding any wines from Long Island and the two that she brought home where from two different wineries owned by the same family. This year, although I planned for more, did not turn out as well as I would have liked. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2010 Domaine Filliatreau, Saumur-Champigny And it is these two that I very rarely see, at least in the retail shops that I frequent. In the way that the general wine drinking public under-values Loire red wines, I think that us Loire lovers under-value the wines of Domaine Filliatreau. My favorite producer in Saumur-Champgny, outside of Clos Rougeard, is Domaine Filliatreau. -
A WINE STORY | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2010 Cantina di Soave: New Brands for 2010 look forward to reporting back on how the wines are doing in the American marketplace - if you see it in a shop, you can feel very comfortable picking up a bottle (or box!) Curious, isn't it, the way that wine drinking in America goes through phases? And even though Soave is a DOC, quality control wasn't the same then as it is now. -
DR. VINO | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2010 Wine children’s book, underage, China TV – sipped & spit SPIT: shopping for wine with kids. SIPPED: spiked juice. The good folks at Gizmodo sacrificed their own palates by turning Welch’s grape juice into, well, fermented grape juice using a product called Spike Your Juice. Just don’t let the WSWA know that underage might be able to get ahold of this for cheaper than wine. Guardian ]. -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2010 First Annual U.S. Puglia Wine Week September 27 – Oct 2 2010 It's a way to swirl and sip your way through Puglia's best wines at top New York wine shops and restaurants, which will be serving specially priced menus and have the winemakers on hand to present the wines. "I really like this wine!" What is a wine week? It is grown in Daunia, an aria of Apulia that consists of tiny plots. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2010 Hayes Ranch "In The Saddle" Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 I don't know about anyone else, but when I am wine shopping, I seem to always avoid buying wines with a ridiculously low price. In mid-July I ventured out on my first wine buying shopping spree since my by pass surgery five weeks earlier. But, I keep doing it and keep failing most of the time. Exactly what I was looking for. Right!!! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2010 More Envy-Inducing New Orleans Food The Muffuletta is a tricky thing, but Mahoney's Po'Boy Shop does it right. considered grabbing his and fleeing the shop, but then I remembered that I have to visit New Orleans again for work and I'll go back to Mahoney's. This week I spent another few days there and I ate some tremendously delicious things. saved the best for last. -
DR. VINO | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2010 Fill ‘er up: self-serve tanks bring wine to French supermarkets Astrid Terzian introduced this concept that hearkens back to a bygone era when wine would arrive in Paris shops in tonneaux and consumers would bring their own flagons to fill. Keg wine and wine vending machines just got supersized: 500 and one-thousand liter kegs have landed in French supermarkets. Or you can get one at the store. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2010 The New Amsterdam Market followed my nose again, and ended up at Porchetta , a little shop in the East Village, where Pig is King. This fall the market is upping it's schedule from once a month to every Sunday through December 19th (with the exception of November 28th, Thanksgiving weekend), and I finally got see what all the fuss was about. Good idea. -

WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 Don Miguel Gascon Malbec 2009 Today, I am finishing a Don Miguel Gascon Malbec 2009 that I recently found for $11 at a local wine shop. In certain times, certain wines become a fad. remember when I started enjoying wines that Cabernet Sauvignon was "thee wine to have." Later it was Chianti, then Merlot and Syrah and now entering the picture is Malbec. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, AUGUST 30, 2010 Wine Shopping Before Work Of course three of the weeks were a little bit less than enjoyable, but it did end on a great day of wine shopping at a few shops that I have never been to before. One, a small village shop with one of the best selections of Italian, German, Australian and California wines that I have seen locally. Opened two so far. -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 2010 Can Celebrity restaurateur Danny Meyer Live up to the Hype? Meyer writes that in the early 2000s he was driving past what would be the glamorous Time Warner Center, with its Mandarin Oriental hotel, CNN studios, luxury apartments, shops, and five-star restaurants wit his then eight-year-old daughter, Hallie. In his new book Setting the Table, Danny Meyer sets himself up as the king of hospitality. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2010 Rain, Rain, Go Away It would have been nice to walk around the downtown area and visit some of the shops. This past weekend Shirley and I took a trip to Canandaigua to attend the second annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival. don't know why, but it seems every time we travel to the Rochester area, except for wine tours, we run into torrential down pours. -
WHY WINE BLOG | FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 2010 Fontana Candida Frascati Superiore 2008 After two months of laying around, drinking coffee, tea, water and gatorade and laying off the good stuff I am beginning to feel the need for a long day of wine shopping, but the fridge is full and I will just have to do my part in making room for more. Getting time to clean out the old wine fridge. Here the grapes for Frascati are grown. -
DR. VINO | THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 2010 What would it take for a sommelier to pull a JetBlue jumper exit? He now runs his own wine shop, Le Dû’s Wines , in the West Village.) This week’s big story is the dramatic, emergency-slide resignation of JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater. Working in a restaurant is also a high-pressure situation (though fortunately, there’s not TSA screening for diners). Ask his opinion on pairings. -
