December tends to be a good month for wine drinking. Everyone reaches into the cellar for the good bottles to help celebrate the passing of another year. Here are the wines I drank in December that have not, even in passing, appeared recently on this blog. -
A WINE STORY | SUNDAY, AUGUST 15, 2010 Blind Tasting Sancerre vs. White Graves Also, because this Graves was a blend of Muscadelle and Semillon, it was slightly fatter, less lean than the Sancerre. What better way to spend a summer weekend than by blinding tasting two whites and out of all the whites in the world, analyzing their variety and origin? Typically I ask wine retailers that wine be sent to me blind (i.e. -
A WINE STORY | TUESDAY, JULY 20, 2010 Tasting Sauvignon Blanc for Summer Second, this wine is a blend including 14% of Semillon (a richer grape) and 2% Viognier. “I want a wine that tastes like summer,” the chic woman tells the clerk at an upscale wine store. WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 2009 Parkerization?? It was a real nice tasting with lots of Bordeaux offerings, including about 15 whites (white Bordeaux is generally a blend of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and sometimes Muscadelle), 100 reds [.]. -
DR. VINO | TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2009 Philip Laffer of Jacob’s Creek on Riesling, petrol, and screwcaps So we grew up making and drinking Semillon and Riesling. There was always extreme care taken by winemakers in making Riesling and to a lesser extent, Semillon. In January, I tasted one of Australia’s most well-known wines, the Jacob’s Creek, Steingarten Riesling. Unfortunately, the bottle was not showing well that day. -
WINE TASTING GUY | MONDAY, MAY 5, 2008 NorCal day 2: Sonoma started with a white blend of 50% Semillon & 50% chardonnay that I really enjoyed. Oily" is used to describe the texture or body of a wine and is commonly associated with Semillon - which may be why I used that descriptor (another benefit to blind tasting). tried to get down a "bug juice" of sorts that was simply awful. Ahhhh. -
WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008 Polaner tasting standouts had a Bordeaux Blanc made by Arietta called the "Arietta White Wine on White Keys 2006" that was a blend of Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon and had an interesting breadiness with some melon & pineapple aromas. Got back from the West Coast this morning and I hope to write up about day 1 of my wine country trip tomorrow. don't know. -
WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2008 "Today's Bordeaux" tasting event The 2003 Chateau Lamourette Sauternes made from 90% semillon, 6% Muscadelle & 4% Sauvignon Blanc was quite pleasant. I attended this event for the second year in a row at The Altman Building in NY city. The event features 100+ (they say 100, but I'm told it is closer to 110) wines from Bordeaux at reasonable (sub $30) prices. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2008 Jenny & Francois Portfolio Tasting 2007 Haut la Vigne Côtes de Duras - 50-50 chardonnay and semillon. In case you're not familiar with Jenny & Francois , they import natural wines from all over France, from heavy hitters like Burgundy to unsung heroes like the Côtes de Duras (just northeast of Bordeaux, and considered Southwest France). Maybe it's just odd wine making. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2008 French Kiss: A French wine tasting dinner The dessert wine was Chateau Castelnau Suduiraut 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. At a recent wine tasting dinner at the Claremont Hotel in Roslyn Long Island I got the chance to try a cross section of French wines that were very cleverly paired with delicious French dishes. Perfect with hors deourves. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2007 Sauvignon Blanc - a Mini Blind Tasting Like the Cheverny, Bordeaux blanc wines tend to be blended, in this case with Semillon. Good friends NorthCarolinaGuy and Gal were in town for a few days and what better reason to have a wine tasting? The tasting gang hasn't been together for a while now - April was the last time we really did our thing. Why Sauvignon Blanc this time around? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MAY 24, 2007 Brooklyn Uncorked: A Tasting of Long Island Wines 2006 Shinn Estate Vineyards First Fruit Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon , $23. The blend with Semillon (4%) and that this wine sees oak seems to indicate that Shinn is going for a white Bordeaux style wine. I'm already a believer in Long Island wine. already like them. They typically clock in between 12-13.5% alcohol. Excellent wine. Yummy. | |
