Silver Birch Sauvignon Blanc 2009 3L
have since tasted a Monthaven Chardonnay (California) and this past week the Silver Birch Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand). The Sauvignon Blanc, on the other hand, was outstanding. Silver Birch Sauvignon Blanc is from the famous cool climate vineyards of the renowned Marlborough winegrowing region.

    Vacation's Over
The second week was supposed to be relaxing, grilling steaks, burgers and chicken and tasting and reviewing a few wines. Chardonnay was disappointing, but a review on the Sauvignon Blanc is coming up next post. Tomorrow I must return to work after a pleasant but hard two week vacation. This one was a bit different.

    The NPA Tasting Room Opens
The '09 Sauvignon blanc is brill. To add a touch of spice he recently opened his after-hours tasting room in his not too cozy industrial part in Santa Rosa. NPA going to be the only tasting room in an industrial park? Love the wines. Love the guy. Unlike Gideon he uses liquid S02, 6%, because it's easy to control.

Chateau Lafayette Reneau dry and semidry Riesling 2008
With May and New York Riesling month coming to close soon, it is safe to say that I tasted more Riesling this month than any one year in my life. This turned out to be a little difficult for me to compare a dry I tasted this week to a semi-dry that I tasted six to eight months ago. Both were opened with a BBQ chicken dinner.

Q/A with Dennis Cakebread of Cakebread Cellars
It was the first time I would meet Dennis Cakebread, and it was a thrill to be able to taste the wines and pepper him with questions about the winery's history. it's always fun to sit next to a winemaker / winery owner during a wine dinner at a top restaurant like Park Avenue Spring in New York City. cakebread cake.

Long Point Winery semi-dry Riesling 2008
Guests are treated to a tasting of fine wines and the spectacular view that the tasting room provides. This past Monday evening was a first for me on-line. Because of my work schedule and Shirley's extra long 'honey-do' list I never have the chance to do a tweet up on Twitter or follow a wine party on Facebook.

    Brotherhood Dry Riesling 2008
This past week-end, my pal Mark and I were able to taste two Rieslings from the Brotherhood Winery located in Washingtonville (Hudson Valley) NY on the Shawangunk Wine Trail. The two wines we tasted were the 2008 Riesling and the 2008 'dry' Riesling. Doing so seemed almost impossible. Enough history.

Joe Vs. the Volcano; Dressner tasting 2010. P. 1
09 Touraine Blanc le P'tit Blanc--cheap and extremely cheerful. 08 Bouisson Pouilleux-- If you're looking for a sauvignon blanc to shock--go for this. What did I love? Jean-Paul Brun always has something surprising to show. And If you're looking for a great Cremant, he's got one. Totally refreshing. House sparkling stuff.

A couple of zippy whites – Benaza Godello and Houards Cheverny
It’s kind of like sauvignon blanc meets chardonnay–and in the case of Domaine des Houards , that’s exactly what it is! From the Cheverny appellation in the eastern Loire, the deliciously refreshing, wonderfully minerally wine is 85 percent sauvignon with 15 percent chardonnay.

The Crosby Roamann Out On A Limb Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2009 is pure golden sunshine. The Brand Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 is showing gorgeously at this young age. You cannot taste the new oak on this and the wine is floral and quite, I hate to admit, reminiscent of Margaux. Find out more at Crosby Roamann's website !

The past few months I have been tasting, or should I say consuming, some really fantastic California wines from many different AVA's. Recently, the wife and I have been discussing a possible trip to California next year. few of the issues are for how long and where. Most notably, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Suggested retail is $15. must buy!

A Visit to Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte
Madame Cathiard fit in this scene beautifully, and I suddenly found myself very curious to visit Smith Haut Lafitte, where I would be a guest of their estate and at dinner, and enjoy a private tasting of the new 2009 vintage. These barrels are regularly topped up, stirred with a stick, and tasted. Florence Cathiard, standing.

Visiting Professor Dubourdieu and Chateau Reynon
Already the word is that 2009 is a fantastic vintage, and as I had some great early tastes this week (and was warned not to write details!) When I went downstairs for a pre-dinner tasting, I found my host was Professor Denis Dubourdieu (Jean-Jacques' father), whom I had also met two weeks earlier with Master of Wine students. But wait!

Rancho Zabaco Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Reserve 2004
Much more jammy than the Paso Robles Zins I recently tasted and more like those Zins I had difficulty handling years ago. purchased locally for $18 and enjoyed what tasted like a much more expensive Zin. I'm leaving Chile(till later) and heading over to California to try a few more Zin's. Deep dark fruit aromas with some cherry.

How to Buy Excellent Cheap Wine
But for me to buy the Hofer Zweigelt, its excellence must derive from the smell and taste of the wine, and from its expression of place, not from the mere fact that it is palatable and costs $10. 2007 Laurent Barth Pinot Blanc , $12.60, Louis/Dressner Selections. This is the third of the Carmenere wines I tasted this month. As I stated in my previous two articles, Carmenere is one of the wines I've pushed aside in the past, but have placed on a list to re-examine in 2010. The first two left me with mixed feelings about the wine. did enjoy this with some Muenster and Dubliner cheese. It'll be fun!!!

From Barrel to Bottle Tasting NYC
Luckily the wine store near me carries a lot of under-$20 Bordeaux by small quality producers, so I am a bit more familiar with this taste profile than the Grand Cru. Among the white Bordeaux I would like to call attention to Chateau Lamothe de Haux, 2009, a dry white blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Semillon, and 20% Muscadelle.

It's been a few years since I tasted Carmenere. Concha y Toro produces several different wine styles including a late harvest Sauvignon Blanc made from grapes the Maule Valley. They also produce a barrel fermented Chardonnay and a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon named after the winery's founder, Don Melchor.

cousin of Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, had been there for centuries. Tempranillo and Garnacha (Grenache) still reign, yet you will find Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Vijura, Graciano, Moscatel, and others. Tasting. The Sauvignon Blancs as a whole are crisp, yet fuller bodied as they are aged on the lees.

Drinking Didier Dagueneau's Wines for the First Time
was pretty much blown away by the two wines I drank - I've never had finer Sauvignon Blanc from anywhere. And it's silly to say it that way because these wines, and from what I've read, Dagueneau's wines in general, are not about Sauvignon, but more about the specific plots where they are grown.

blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot. In the mouth, the taste was more mature than I thought it should be at it's young age, soft and mellow with a hint of chocolate. Winemakers notes: This dynamic duo combines the brawn of Cabernet Sauvignon and the suppleness of Merlot. Can't do much better than that. Alcohol: 13.0%

One of the advantages of living in the new millennium - for wine students, at any rate, is the opportunity to compare tasting notes on the Internet and even connect with winemakers. Recently I tasted 2007 Kanonkop Pinotage with an eye on how I would know it was a 2007 South African Pinotage if I had to identify it blind.
