Maybe it's because the modern wines are dry, and a lot of Riesling lovers talk about how they prefer their wines to have a bit of residual sugar. It was so outrageously good that even showed better than the 1971 JJ Prum that was at the same tasting–and this was according to one of Riesling’s most ardent fans was was also at the tasting. I have learned over the past few years, that the Finger Lakes Wine Region makes some fabulous Rieslings. have also learned to appreciate many of the other white wines and a few of the red wines manufactured in the region. One of the new ones, at least for me, is Vidal Blanc. One was the 2009 Swedish Hill Vidal Blanc ( $12 ).

The petrol note sometimes found in young Riesling is a flaw according to Olivier Humbrecht. And we lack a better vocabulary for the petrol note that many Riesling aficionados cherish in older bottles. Riesling needs 110 to 120 days to ripen, he says, and harvesting the grapes too early can lead to an undesirable aroma.

Been on a Finger Lakes Riesling kick lately and can't seem to allow myself to open anything but Finger Lakes Riesling. This past weekend, I opened my lone bottle of Sheldrake Point dry Riesling 2009 ( $15 ). do like my Rieslings dry and this is another of the 2009 vintages I found to be remarkable.

In my last post I gave high praises to Hosmer Winery's Rieslings that I tasted at the winery last Sunday. But, I was so impressed with both the sweeter Riesling and the dry Riesling at Hosmer I could not wait to uncork one of them when I got home. The Hosmer Dry Riesling 2009 is amazing. Nice, nice mouthfeel.

Purchased a bunch along with the Sparkling Riesling Cuvee that won last years Governor's Cup. I'm a German wine neophyte, but over the past year I've started poking around a bit, drinking Riesling here and there. But what are the basic German Rieslings? Knebel makes a wine that is simply called Riesling Trocken. So flawed definition and all, I convened the panel and we tasted 2009 "basic" German Riesling.

Vertical shoot positioning is often used to shade the grapes from the intense sun, and Riesling is usually planted on higher slopes than Gruner Veltliner. My favorite of the Rainer Wess wines was the Riesling Achleiten 2008, which had a smokey minerality that came out of the dark granite soil. Both producers were so energetic and fun.

Hundreds of Austrian wines will be available including several from the much-anticipated 2010 vintage along with older vintage wines from varietals such as Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch and Riesling. From Germany's Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region in the Saarburger Rausch Applellation, this is an outstanding Riesling wine. Clear, medium pale with lemon gold colors and slightly funky but friendly aromas accented with hints of petrol, honey and a floral perfume. Again I say. out-STANDING! and $25.

The Yasa Macabeo reminded me a lot of Finger Lakes Rieslings. Still on the hunt for new varieties of white wines has led me to the Yasa Old Vines Macabeo ( $8 ). This another of the fantastic white wines from the northern regions of Spain. It is the prominent white grape from the Calatayud region of Spain. Try a Macabeo from Spain.

What struck me as especially interesting was that many of his whites were so packed with minerals they had almost a Riesling character in terms of pure stoniness. So it's something closely akin to "superbowl week" here in New York, now that producers and negotiants from Burgundy are here for events surrounding La Paulee.

In the past two years I have come to enjoy Voignier, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Frascati, Tocai Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc and Albarino along with several white blends. I am finding it hard to accept that I am becoming a fan of white wines over what I always thought would be my only choice, that is, red wines. The aroma was all apple.

The Seppelt Drumborg Riesling 2010 has the fresh lime aromas of a young Aussie Riesling. The Australians like their Rieslings young, fresh and dry. Wednesday, at a trade tasting in New York City, I tried six Aussie Rieslings from the 2010 vintage–yes, 2010, as in that year that just finished 28 days ago.

Riesling and Pinot Noir was the focus of the event - six young Rieslings, and six Rieslings with age to see their incredible development. Fifteen Pinot Noirs, after tasting twelve of the most incredible Rieslings, was done at breakneck speed. Fabulous event today at Landmark in the Time Warner Center!

And, finally, the menu pairs a botrytized Washington state riesling with the apple pie and ice cream. Poet’s Leap Riesling “Botrytis” 2008 ( find this wine ). Obviously, a lot of issues are on the metaphorical table as President Obama entertains China’s president Hu Jintao. But what’s in the glass? Chardonnay and lobster?

James MacGuire in The Art of Eating writes "With the rich but not unusually flavorful sauce of rabbit with white wine and cream, you might drink a dry or near dry, fresh, aromatic Alsace Riesling or Pinot Gris." The other night, I cooked a rabbit for the first time. My friend Peter was coming over for dinner and I wanted to try something new.

When I wrote my Year In Review , I named the Atwater Estates Riesling 2008 as my best white wine for 2010. That choice was not easy when you consider all the fantastic Finger Lakes Riesling tasted during the past year. One of these is the 2009 Dry Riesling from the Swedish Hill Winery on the Cayuga Lake wine trail.

The Inniskillin winery itself was created in 1975 by Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser, across the street on 32 acres of Riesling, Chardonnay, and Gamay. When it was purchased by Albrecht Seeger and his family in 1978, the winery moved to the Brae Burns Estate (where you can find Icewine varitals such as Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Vidal.

Finally have some time off from work and can now catch up on many home projects, including the blog. have enjoyed a few very nice wines in the past month and have been able to try a few new varietals.
