They gave 163 volunteers a taste of 2006 Clos de los Siete, a $15ish wine from Michel Rolland’s Argentina property and rated 92 points from the Wine Advocate. They told some of the participants the score beforehand, others not, and a told a third set that the wine got 72 points. There are of course other rating systems, and their effectiveness is also debatable. don't want to spend time here summarizing the various arguments, and I don't have a definitive opinion on the best rating system for wine. Once that issue disappears subsequent vintages of a wine that got a higher rating won’t cause sales. In the near future, will it take a wheelbarrow of points to sell a Moscato? In “ The Emperor of Wine ,” Elin McCoy writes that Parker and his friend Victor Morgenroth tried various systems of rating and evaluating wines in their (blind) tasting group in the mid-seventies. ” Ironically, score inflation is the most likely threat to the 100-point system today. VINO | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2009 Blind tasting is tough – tasting Bordeaux 2005 with Robert Parker When I asked him about the mechanical aspects of his work, he told me in a matter-of-fact way that he remembers every wine he has tasted over the past thirty-two years and, within a few points, every score he has given as well..
