BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2010 Chateau Simone - Wine From Another Era Chateau Simone is about 15 hectares of vineyards in and around the village of Meyreuil, less than 10 miles east of Aix-en-Provence, further inland and to the west of Bandol. Most wines that are made today in Provence and in the southern Rhône are very big and extracted wines. alcohol wines in Provence nowadays? Except vampires. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2010 6 Rosé Wines for Thanksgiving Domain de Mourchon Seguret Loubie (Rose) 2007 Having a Cote du Rhone designation, this Loubie Rose blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah comes from 40 year old estate grown vines. Flavor: broad and fresh; the characteristic fruity aromas of the bouquet come through with complexity and end with a clean finish. -
A WINE STORY | SUNDAY, JULY 11, 2010 Visiting Philippe Burel at Abbaye Saint Hilaire Like many of the wineries I’ve visited in Provence, the whites, roses, and reds come in three styles or quality levels. The red (a blend of syrah, cinsault, grenache, cabernet sauvignon, and others) has a rich toast nose with hints of vanilla and dark chocolate, and on the palate full bodied with a finish of black licorice.

A WINE STORY | SUNDAY, JULY 11, 2010 Chatting with Valérie Rousselle-Riboud of Chateau Roubine in Provence, France One of my favorites was the red Cuvee Prestige 2006, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which is paired with the lamb. Cuvée Classique combines modern wine making techniques with local tradition and is a typical light and fruity Provencal wine, perfectly suited to Mediterranean cooking. Well, this is that scene. -
A WINE STORY | SUNDAY, JULY 11, 2010 A Wine & Culinary adventure at Domaine du Clos d’Alari says Nathalie Vancoillie, a very tanned, toned, attractive woman with sun-streaked hair and an athletic build as she escorts us into her Chateau in Provence, a charming stone structure that dates from the 15th century. Most people think of Provence as St. Grapes include Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvedre, Merlot, Cinsault, and Rolle. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, APRIL 18, 2010 The Handsell The other day I was in Astor Wines and I noticed a few bottles on the shelves by Henri Milan, a producer that I really like in Provence. Makes sense I guess - the wines start at $25 for a VdP and go up to over $50 for his top wine, a gorgeous Syrah blend called Clos Milan. Some wines sell themselves. don't think so. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 2010 Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel #4 - Inexpensive Provence Reds But the inexpensive red wines of Provence? Some of my favorite wine stores, Chambers Street included, do not stock even one inexpensive Provence red wine. But there are some great under $20 red wines from Provence. I'm talking about lavender and other Provence herbs and gamy leathery animale aromas - not just ripe fruit. -
SLAKED | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2009 2006 Grammercy Cellars Syrah Columbia Valley At Buttermilk Channel recently we ordered a 2006 Grammercy Cellars Lagniappe Syrah ** from Columbia Valley, produced by Master Sommelier Greg Harrington. Succulent comes to mind, as do dried herbs and Provence and perhaps even dried roses. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2009 Provence - the Best $10 Red Wines? But I found two of them recently, and they're both from Provence. Is Provence quietly putting out the best $10 red wines? Provence is such a misunderstood wine region. There are, of course, great producers making great wines from other areas in Provence, and their entry-level bottles can offer truly fantastic value. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2009 Two Kinds of Ripe Or perhaps, truly fine red wines made from Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and the other southern grapes, will in 30 years be coming from the more northerly climes of Beaujolais and Burgundy. Tags: Bandol Technical Stuff Provence Châteauneuf du Pape Until a decade ago, alcohol levels were typically about 13%. Anyone want in? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2009 It Comes in Waves This guy likes Bordeaux, so I brought a wine I thought he would enjoy, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from Provence, a naturally made wine with beautiful aromatics and a real sense of place, the 2000 Domaine du Deffends Côteaux Varois Clos de la Truffi è re. We had quite a streak, and I guess I shouldn't complain. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2009 By the Glass - Rosé Edition If you're willing to spend $25 or more, the rosés of Bandol in Provence are among the world's finest, and I think they're worth every penny. Here are the rosés I've had at home so far this spring, some great, some not as great: 2008 Commanderie de Peyrassol Côtes de Provence Rosé , $14, Rosenthal Imports. Really a lovely wine. -
SLAKED | MONDAY, APRIL 20, 2009 2006 Sine Qua Non Grenache Raven Series From a central California vineyard, Sine Qua Non's 2006 Grenache Raven Series (8% syrah, 26% whole cluster fermented and aged in about 40% new French oak) is a purple color turning ruby on the rim - not opaque - but there is a certain density to the color here. Smooth on the palate, with nice acidity through the midnote. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 29, 2009 Brooklynguy's $20 and Under Case beautiful wine from the Côte de Provence, a blend of 85% Rolle (that's Vermentino to you Italo-philes) and 15% Ugni-Blanc (that's Trebbiano to you Italo-philes). Syrah, and Grenache. 75% Syrah, some Grenache, Cinsault, and Mourvedre make up the balance. Classic peppery and meaty Syrah, with good energy and balance. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2009 Who is Henri Milan? Remy de Provence. This wine is 80% old vines Grenache and 20% Syrah from gravel and yellow sandstone soils that Milan is fond of comparing to that of Château Rayas. And maybe that's okay, because at about $55, the Clos Milan is pretty expensive for a Provence wine. Tags: Provence Henri Milan loved this wine! Coincidence? -
ALICE FEIRING | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2009 Jean Marie Rimbert, a small note Every time I'm knocked about by the Mistral, the powerful wind of Provence and the Rhone, I remember that I forgot its intensity. While that wind blowhards the bean pole-like vines of syrah, it doesn't hold a candle to what whips around Languedoc's St. Chinian, in the hills where Jean Marie Rimbert grows his vines. That and the cold? -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2008 TAKING THE STRESS OUT AND BRINGING IN THE FUN TO HOLIDAY WINE SHOPPING The areas to consider are the Cote Du Rhone, The Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence and Southwest France. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut, these are the most popular grapes of Southern France and vignerons (French winemakers) play around with them in the cellars to create their own identities. Ah, the Holidays. promise. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2008 Jenny & François Fall Portfolio Tasting This, in my opinion, is the strongest part of the portfolio - the selections from southern France, country wines from the Rhône, Languedoc-Roussillan, and Provence. 2) 2006 Gilles Azzoni VdP Le Raisin et L'Ange Fable (100% Ard è che Syrah for acid freaks). Sadly, this Champagne seems now to have broken the $50 barrier. ll take it. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, APRIL 7, 2008 Jenny & Francois Follow Up This is a blend of Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache. 2005 Comptoirs de Magdala Côtes de Provence Escapade , $16. I was very much impressed with the Jenny & Francois portfolio , so much so that I decided to buy a few and taste them at home with dinner. You know what this means? The blend is Mourvedre, Carignan, and Grenache. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2008 An Imaginary Wine Vacation in Bandol But I have an active imagination and lately I've been thinking about the south of France, Provence in particular. So instead we decided to spend a couple of days drinking the wines of Provence, specifically the Bandol appellation. Bandol is quietly known for making some of the finer red wines in Provence. Why Bandol? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2007 WBW #33 - Mid-Priced Midi Wines The Languedoc-Roussillon, also known as the Midi, is a huge area west of Provence, south of the Rhone Valley, just northeast of the Spanish Pyrenees, all of it draped around the Mediterranean Sea. This is hot weather France where hardy grapes thrive, like Grenache and Mourvedre, Cinsault and Carignan, and of course, Syrah. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SATURDAY, MARCH 3, 2007 Red Dessert Wine: Banyuls of Mas Blanc The Languedoc-Roussillon could easily be two different wine regions, as it is somewhat spread out along the Mediterranean coast and inland, from the western edge of Provence all the way to the Spanish border near the city of Perpignan. She told me about this red dessert wine called Banyuls. It's not Port, it's French wine. Red dessert wine? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2006 My Wine and Food Resolutions Beaujolais, the southern Rhone Valley, Languedoc, and Provence, New York, and Piedmont are wine areas that offer quality wines at reasonable prices. For example, why am I devoting 2% of my cellar space to Australian Syrah, even if it is produced by Two Hands and supposedly delicious? can open a good Pinot once or twice a week. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2006 Hooray For Vacqueyras! strolled pass the Bordeaux that I will tackle one day and the rose of Provence. The computer said one hundred percent granache but after tasting it there might some syrah and a little mouverde in there. I am on a brief French wine kick right now. This shop wasn't as informative and interactive as Astor. Nothing. Scan.scan.scan. Bacon. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2006 Tasing Provence and The Loire First up was a rose form Provence. The producers name is Chateau Rouet and it was a blend of 60% granache and 40% syrah and had a beautiful pink color and a wacky curvaceous bottle. This rose was also not only from two of my favorite grapes but also from Provence; an area of France known for it's wonderful rose. Gal was torn. | |
