drank an Oregon Pinot Gris and I really liked it. Now, if you've been following this blog for a while, you know that I used to drink a lot of Oregon Pinot. But one day in February I was browsing in a large Manhattan store in which I don't normally shop, and I saw bottles of 2010 Montinore Pinot Gris on sale for just under $11.

Mostly the range consistes of blanc de blancs from Mesnil, but the rosé has 25% pinot noir from Ambonnay. Of the Wind Gap wines, I found the 2010 Windsor Oaks Vineyard Pinot Gris, which sees about 100 days of skin contact and has a resulting orange-y hue, good acidity and a phenolic quality. The rosé has a lip-smacking acidity.

The 2007 Sync and an outstanding 2008 blend of Cab Franc, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon called Overlay Verse 4. The wine was a beautiful blend of 50% Riesling, 20% Pinot Gris, 30% Cayuga White that paired very well with the fish dinner. Entrance sign off W. Lake Rd. On this day, I tasted only a few whites.

These white wines emerge from their fermentation on the grape skins with a rich, sometimes orange, hue. It intrigues them.

Mercer Estates wines sampled at lunch included the Pinot Gris (one of the best selling wines in Washington), the Merlot (absolutely my favorite of the Mercer Estates wines with its mouth filling, rich flavor, incredible balance, and pure elegance of fruit) and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Baco Noir was intriguing, but the '05 Pinot Noir was fabulous, especially with the chocolate fudge brownie served with the wine. Along with some white wines, I could not leave without the Pinot Noir. couple of Cab/Francs, a few dry Rosé, some Pinot Gris, Seyval, Vidal Blanc and a ton of Riesling. was not driving.

Friday I enjoyed a few glasses of Paco & Lola Albarino and Sunday a very nice Pinot Gris from MacMurray Ranch. I mentioned in my last post that I have been dealing with an ulcer issue. It's something I've had for about 20 years and seems to come and go whenever. In the meantime, I have given up coffee and wine.

This week has been about as far up and down on Pinot Grigio as it can get. Earlier in the week I tasted what maybe the worst tasting Pinot Grigio I ever had. Pinot Grigio makes terrific aperitifs before a meal. The San Angelo Pinot Grigio from Castello Banfi is one of the best I've had at my young white wine drinking age.

The Domaine Bott-Geyl Sonnenglanz Grand Cru Alsace dessert wine, made of Pinot Gris (and apparently given a 98 by Robert Parker) was a deliciously sweet treat.  I went away (within Israel) for the sabbath to a friend of the family.  A wonderful woman and great cook it is always a nice shabbat when spent with her and her family.

Here are a few things that struck me during the tasting: If I had tasted blind, I would have guessed wrong on the grape varieties in many of these wines. Maybe it's just odd wine making. Pinot gris is called Pinot Grigio in Italy, and this is of questionable value to its reputation. have to say that Eric Asimov's recent pinot grigio tasting notwithstanding, I just haven't found a Pinot Grigio that I would serve proudly to a fellow wine lover.
