I have no idea what occurred between the early 1980's and present in the case of New York Finger Lakes red wines. Last year, on the Cayuga Wine Trail, I finally found a few very nice reds and this past year discovered a new Finger Lakes winery that is producing some very excellent reds, the Damiani Wine Cellars.

New York is full of festivities and gatherings and friends and family. Everyone is shopping for someone (and a little for themselves…don’t lie…you know who you are) braving the crowds and the cold to find that perfect gift. People have been coming into the shop as of late wondering what to do about certain situations.

And ever since I banned people from getting wines at the closest store to our venue, a store that seems to specialize in unearthing wines that have been stored next to the boiler for several winters, the quality of the wines has risen tremendously and people really have a lot of run exploring the wine shops of the city. I stopped in the Duty Free Shop on the return trip from Puerta Vallarta. This has been a habit of mine since I found bottles of Dom Perignon for $75 in a Duty Free Shop when I was travelling in Puerto Rico. The 1999 Dom Perignon is now in Duty Free Shops worldwide, advertised at $169. Those same bottles now sell for $150.

But there is one place where you can still taste fine wine for free: New York wine stores. While there are many silly (separate entrances for separate licenses) and annoying (not being able to to sell cheese in a wine shop nor wine in a food shop) aspects of New York wine retail laws, the free tasting is a definite boon for consumers.

They reflected tradition while embracing new winemaking techniques and never giving up balance. Maybe it's one of those things were they just buy it for there store or wine shop to be diverse or for their restaurant because they are Greek. The history, the geography, climate; its all very new. And people in Japan feel as strongly about ramen as we in New York feel about bagels or a slice of pizza. Here in New York Nero d'Avola, Sicily's most important grape has slowly crept into our vocabulary. It went from some weird, obscure wine found on the bottom shelf of wine shops and in the back of wine lists to a well known and well received wine that can have amazing quality. For me there are two schools of Nero d'Avola.
