Visiting Kanonkop in South Africa
It turns out that in the 17th century (yes, “new world” wines can be that old!) The visual makes the name of the wine easier to remember, especially since the winery is famed for its award winning Pinotage. Kanonkop was the only Pinotage available at my Manhattan wine store, and had been highly recommended by a clerk. News S.

Talking Chenin Blanc with Ken Forrester of South Africa
When I saw him at a Wines of South Africa tasting in New York City on Wednesday, I asked him if Chenin blanc was a difficult grape. Have gradations for Pinotage akin to Rioja (crianza, reserva, gran reserva) to indicate at a glance the degree of seriousness of the wine. Ken Forrester likes Chenin Blanc. Prohibit corks.

Last night at dusk I slipped into Xai Xai on West 51st–a dim lit wood centric South African wine bar. At six, the small bar was nearly full, but the tables were empty. I sat by the window without a draft, in warm light that was readily absorbed by a dark slate floor. With brick

Frisbees and Snacks and Wine OH My!! : Part I
One coolest thing about life in New York City is central park. Man, I love New York! It starts out with primarily shiraz (syrah) and a good amount of the South African original, pinotage, a viticultural cross of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir created in the 1920's. It is huge. But the best part is Sheep's Meadow. No prob.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2007 Runnin' To The Mailbox For Ventana Syrah
After the pinotage blend it was time for the 2003 Ventana syrah. am not sure if it was new oak or not but I do know that the pamphlet that accompanied the wines said they use Minnesota oak. As I mentioned in the beginning of this lengthy post I did a search and cannot find it in New York. And more often than not.or
