    G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo 2009
    Italian NebbioloI think the best way to describe this wine is just to say that it is an Italian Beaujolais. If opened blind, that is how I would have described it. Aromas of candy cherry licorice with just a hint of smoke. Really not much to say about this wine, but. Did I say BUT? This was a very enjoyable wine.

The other night I had dinner with 7 other people in Manhattan, a dinner featuring 12 vintages of Marcarini Barolo Brunate. Three wines each from the 60's, 70's, 80's, two wines from the 90's, and the 2007.

The Langhe area has a long history of vinegrowing and many of the wines made here use traditional, well-established grape varieties such as Arneis and Favorita for whites, and Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Freisa for reds. The Seghesio Langhe is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes.

    What's in an Old Bottle?
    Were these wines made purely of Nebbiolo? I've long thought that those old Vallanas aren't 100% nebbiolo (or spanna), although it doesn't bother me one bit. Levi agreed that the wines are likely not to be pure Nebbiolo, and as Peter said, this doesn't bother him a bit. don't taste Aglianico in those wines, I taste Nebbiolo.

    To top it all off, we ordered a bottle of thirteen year old nebbiolo from one of my favorite producers, Vietti. We can't go out on New Year's Eve. It's sort of a house arrest kind of thing. Long story. According to Vietti's website, the Masseria "cru" is located in Neive, and the vineyard is planted with 4,600 plants per hectare.

    2004 Sandro Fay Rosso del Valtellina, $13.50, Omni Wines importer (100% Nebbiolo). For several months now the Euro is comfortably in the 1.5 range. Yup, it costs over $1.50 to buy one Euro. If you're in France, for example, and you exchange $100, you walk away with only 65 Euro, and that's before commissions and fees. We are in a recession.

    This dry red Barolo wine is made from the Nebbiolo grape, near Alba in the Piemonte region. Color: ruby red, medium weight, Nose: pepper, plum, green apple, smoky, leathery. Palate: plum, very dry but with a bite, astringent, tannic, 13.5% alcohol

    Gettin' A little Chile in South Carolina
    Jancis Robinson tells me that it is a cousin of nebbiolo and is related as well to freisa, a grape from piedmont that makes a bright naturally fizzy red wine. I have been away for a bit. Sorry ‘bout that. hope they have had their coffee and decent commuter traffic that day so we can wow them with the hard work we have done. Pretty cool.

I would first like to apologize for my sporadic posting. have a couple pretty big things in the works and the to-do list seems to get bigger and bigger. knock one item off and it is quickly replaced with another priority. Will Deetrane get to keep the wine? Big wine.

And now we return to our story, featuring Deetrane, guest-poster and pal extraordinaire: At the end of the first installment I had just told the Esca staff that I had been buying their wine - stolen from their cellar.
