    [Napa] Helping the wildfire recovery
Here is a sad list of 22 wineries damaged by the fires in both Sonoma and Napa. The wine country fires caused a lot of damage, that we know. But as the fires come under control and some residents return to their greatly altered lives after mandatory evacuations, we are starting to get a handle on the extent of what happened.

So when whipping winds of up to 70 mph hit the initial flames, they spread, well, like wildfire.

    [Napa] Mazzoni Tuscan White Wines
MAZZONI represents a historic collaboration between the Franceschi family from Tuscany and Terlato family from Napa. I think summer may have arrived. A little late, but nonetheless, it has arrived. That means I can start pouring my summer white wines. I can think of no better way to begin than two white wines from Italy, Mazzoni Bianco di Toscana and Mazzoni Pinot Grigio.

News franciscan winery janet myers Napa Valley A lovely lunch today with Janet Myers, the Director of Winemaking and General Manager at Franciscan Estate. She was in New York to promote her exciting new white wine called Equilibrium, a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat. It''s a very interesting wine - highly aromatic with crisp acidity and a rounded, lifted, slightly off-dry flavor.

[Napa] 2005 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon
USA 2005 Napa Valley Deep purple-black. Ultra" is apt. Ultra-ripe, ultra-concentrated, ultra-strong. Certainly prune, raisin, new oak and cassis, menthol and chocolate; but notes of blackberry briar and bramble berry. Perhaps this is "too much" but it''s interesting as well.

It''s funny that I label this as "Napa Valley" when it''s produced in Knights Valley, but it really does have more in common with Napa than Sonoma. USA Napa Valley 2002 Unfortunately this was cloyingly sweet and medicinal when first opened; probably lightly corked. With over two hours of air the funk blew mostly off. The nose is muted but shows prune and sweet cocoa. Semi-sweet blackberry, powdered sugar, and maraschino cherry. Medium-length and medium body.

[Napa] 2000 Peter Michael "Les Pavots"
2000 USA Napa Valley Deep purple black color. The profile is very Bordeaux: black olive, cinnamon, herby, but also raisins, cocoa, and plum. The tannins are soft, sweet, and full, with good length on the fore-palate. The 2000s have been disparaged over the years, but this shows great class at 13.
[Napa] Stony Hill - A Visit to the Iconic Napa Valley Winery
I had never before been to the Napa Valley, or to any California wine region. As we approached Napa we hit traffic, the first sign of the popularity of this place as a tourist destination. We saw large flat vineyards with rows of skinny vines supported by posts and wires, all draped with thin hoses for irrigation purposes - it gets very hot in the Napa Valley and months can go by in the summer without rain.

[Napa] Mayacamas Vineyards sold to Charles Banks & co
Bob made the wines from the vineyards high above the floor of the Napa Valley ever since. Bob and Elinor Travers bought Mayacamas Vineyards in 1968 when they were just 30 years old. John Gilman lauds Mayacamas for not succumbing to the “tides of fashion,” calling it “one of the greatest cabernet sauvignon producers in the history of California.” ” So it is big news today that the Travers have sold the property.

[Napa] Broken lynx: Vintners to fight grizzlies, pandas, & climate?
And what about preservation efforts–land use regulations in Napa, for example, essentially rendered hillside vineyard development impossible over a decade ago. Climate change threatens to redraw the wine map over the next few decades. That we know. A new paper suggests that the establishment of new vineyards in cooler areas will endanger the habitat of animals ranging from grizzlies to pandas.

[Napa] Jim Barrett and the Irish Order of the Wine Geese
Jim Barrett, who purchased Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley in 1972, died yesterday at the age of 86 ( see bio ). Chateau Montelena burst on to the international stage just a few years after Barrett purchased the property when its chardonnay outpaced other whites to win the Paris Tasting of 1976. This was captured (with a degree of artistic license) in the film Bottle Shock a few years ago.
[Napa] Visiting Santos Jorge Winery in Alentejo
With its palm trees, the pictures of Herdade Dos Machados reminds me a bit of the pictures I’ve seen of Napa Valley from the early 19 th century, when men of the “wild west” such as Mr. Dollarhyde (a cattle rancher whose land is now owned by St. “What a cold day to be in New York!”
    [Napa] Quick Radish Pickle
Not long ago I ate dinner at a friend's house and he served napa cabbage quick pickled in salt, and it was delicious. So apparently you can pickle vegetables merely by adding salt and then waiting a little while as the water is drawn from the cells. This quick pickling method can take as little as 5 minutes if you are David Chang , or it can take longer, but my sense is that it's up to the pickler to decide how long the pickling will take.

[Napa] Corkbuzz Wine Studio: Sommelier Guild Tasting with Matt Stamp MS
As soon as I saw the announcement of a tutored tasting of Napa Valley wines by Matt Stamp I signed up! Wow, what a fabulous experience! These classes, usually held at Corkbuzz, are offered through the Guild of Sommeliers and are super informative and also fun, because we taste very interesting wines and I always see people I know from all the WSET and other classes I took before achieving my WSET Diploma in 2009 (now i'm 2nd year Master of Wine student).

[Napa] #MWBootCamp (or adventures during the Master of Wine Conference, Bordeaux)
The week spent taking mock exams at the Bordeaux-based conference site was nothing quite like the "Hotel California" experience in the Napa Valley. See all those smiling faces in the picture above? It was small, intimate, with lots of face time with the MWs and the other students, many of whom are fresh-faced to the program, having bonded at the "first year" Austria conference just last year.

The film got good reviews around the time of the Napa Valley Film Festival; while it’s not likely to knock off The Avengers, Part 56, from the top spot this summer, I, for one, am looking forward to it. A wine story will be splashing on the silver screen this year: Samuel Goldwyn has bought the theatrical and digital distribution rights to “Somm.” ” The documentary, directed by Jason Wise, follows four candidates studying for the Master Sommelier exam.

Robert Parker once derided bloggers as “blobbers.” ” Another time, he couldn’t bring himself to mention Jim Budd by name (referring to him only as “ this blogger “). Martine Saunier started a wine import business in 1979 because she “couldn’t find anything exceptional to drink.” ” As of last week, she sold that company.
