Exploring the Wines of Dante Irurtia in Uruguay
Medio Medio (Sparkling wine half muscat half chard). "What exciting wines!" is my first reaction to meeting Marcelo Irurtia, who is in charge of vineyard management for his family's 100 year old winery, and Maria Silvia Bianchi, who is in charge of exportation. The brand of these two wines is Km.0 Now here are some tasting notes.

I couldn't help but exclaim as Victoria  Varela, the fourth generation of her family who is also in charge of the export market, shows me around her Varela Zarranz estate. With us is Carla Fallabrino, who works in marketing and tourism. you can see them both in the picture above.

Yet Further Adventures in Blind Tasting
with carrot soup (and in the night's only tragic wine event, the Vatan Sancerre meant for that soup was corked), a seriously disappointing bottle of 1987 Joly Coulée de Serrant and a Japanese Madeira-style wine by Chuo Budo-shu (or the Grace Winery) made of Koshu and Muscat Bailey-A, both grapes indigenous to Japan. I love blind tasting.

liked the Cote du Ventoux Rouge 2009 (60% syrah, 30% grenache, 20% others) with its blueberry flavors, yet went wild for the white Muscat d Beaumes de Venise 2008. Imagine yourself in Ampuis in 1781. This is a tiny town in the Northern Rhone, famous for its red wine made from Syrah and white from Viognier. The soil is clay, granite, and sand.

Two friends came over for dinner the other night. don't aspire to drink geeky wine, and I'm not saying that geeky wine is by definition good wine - that would be absurd. And I loved it. Me neither.

Three junctures of Muscat grapes are used in the production, fresh harvested grapes, sun-dried grapes (uva passa), and semi-dried grapes (uva passolata), making it a very labor intensive process. The wine is made from the must of very ripe Moscato grapes whose fermentation has been stopped by adding pure alcohol.

Chateau Simone - Wine From Another Era
The reds are made primarily of Grenache and Mourvèdre, and there are many other grapes added in smaller proportions, like Cinsault, Syrah, Carignan, Petit Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and then local varieties such as Muscat Noir, Castet, Manosquin, and Brun-Fourca. absolutely loved the wine and I was still thinking about it this morning.

Wine Big Shots and the Wines they Share
It's a rare treat for me to get to hang out with Jeremy and although we insisted that he and Tracie were our guests, they insisted upon bringing a wine to us, a dry Muscat from the Veneto. This wine is bone dry, which is the only way I enjoy Muscat or Gewurztraminer at this point. He recommended something like a salt cod purée.

Wine and Cheese - Hudson Red with Chidaine Montlouis
like highly aromatic wines with washed rind cheeses - Gewurz or Muscat perhaps, but Hudson Red is on the mellow side of the washed rind spectrum. There are some great cheeses produced in New York and Vermont. Local cheeses have achieved, in my opinion, higher quality within the cheese world than local wines have within the wine world.

Wine and Cheese - Le Welsche and Gewurztraminer
understand Gewurztraminer, like Muscat, the way they relate to the other white Alsace grapes. In general, Gewurztraminer and Muscat make aromatic wines, whereas Riesling and Sylvaner are more mineral, and Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are more about fresh fruit. I'm one of those weirdos who likes Gewurztraminer.

    Brooklynguy's Notes on Recession Wines
