DR. VINO | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2010 There’s Zin. And then there’s Ridge Geyserville. [mature wine] The vines are an assortment of varieties, co-planted in the vineyard here and there, and include mostly zinfandel but also carignane, petite sirah, and matarao (mourvedre). All too often, Zinfandel is a highway to a quick, cheap buzz. However, there’s Zin, and then there’s a wine like Ridge Geyserville. The lay of the land. -

WHY WINE BLOG | FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 2010 Fontana Candida Frascati Superiore 2008 Getting time to clean out the old wine fridge. After two months of laying around, drinking coffee, tea, water and gatorade and laying off the good stuff I am beginning to feel the need for a long day of wine shopping, but the fridge is full and I will just have to do my part in making room for more. Here the grapes for Frascati are grown. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, AUGUST 9, 2010 Stoney Lonesome Estates, Reserve White Merlot 2008 I love it when Shirley decides to experiment in the kitchen. It either means we end up going out to dinner or I am in for a special treat. don't always know where she gets her inspiration and last night I did not see any of her cookbooks on the counter, so that means she thought about this recipe while trimming her herb garden. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2010 Treleaven Wines Meritage 2007 I don't often go with Shirley and Pam to the Saturday morning Central New York Regional Farmer's Market, but I made an exception today. was also out of bed early enough to tag along, which is unusual. did stop at one and tasted their 2007 Meritage. It seems to be that the wine always is a bit different, no, a lot different than what I remembered. -
WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 2010 Boho Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel 2008 3L I've been holding out on the wine reviews until everything gets back to normal after my surgery. WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, MAY 24, 2010 Chateau Lafayette Reneau dry and semidry Riesling 2008 With May and New York Riesling month coming to close soon, it is safe to say that I tasted more Riesling this month than any one year in my life. The hard part was deciding which ones I would post on the blog. After this article I will post once more on a NY Riesling and may list all those I have had. Both were opened with a BBQ chicken dinner. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, MAY 18, 2010 Long Point Winery semi-dry Riesling 2008 This past Monday evening was a first for me on-line. Because of my work schedule and Shirley's extra long 'honey-do' list I never have the chance to do a tweet up on Twitter or follow a wine party on Facebook. You can add comments or photos or just sit back, relax, read what others are having and just sip away on your own wine. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, MAY 16, 2010 Zugibe semi-dry Riesling 2008 This past weeks edition of the Syracuse New Times, a weekly alternative newspaper published in Syracuse, New York, contained an interesting article on Finger Lakes Riesling. Gary noted four wineries, one of which I vaguely remember from an article written by Evan Dawson for the New York Cork Report. Sipping later was delightful. -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, MAY 10, 2010 Sud de France Top-Scoring Wines at Maison de la Region Languedoc-Roussillon think he liked the Chateau de Cabezac La Garrigue the best from Minervois and it was very good, yet I liked Le Petit Arthur, which was a GSM (grenache, syrah, mourvedre) with carignan. Arnaud Moynier. Recently, the intersection of 53rd and 5th has become a regular stop. Of course, the salmon color gave away the majority of Cinsault. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, MAY 9, 2010 Brotherhood Dry Riesling 2008 To continue Riesling month here in New York, I wanted to find something other than my favorites from the Finger Lakes region. Doing so seemed almost impossible. Other than ordering on line, it is very difficult to find New York wines other than Finger Lakes and Adirondack wineries in the local shops. Enough history. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, MAY 3, 2010 Red Tail Ridge semi-dry Riesling 2008 Just finished watching the movie "Avatar" while sipping on my first Riesling of the summer. Finger Lakes Riesling of course. This month is Riesling month in New York and this will be the first of many I'll enjoy over the next 30 days. The 2008 Red Tail Ridge semi-dry Riesling was suggested by my sister-in-law. This is now one of her favorites. -
WHY WINE BLOG | THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 2010 Conconnan Conservancy Peite Sirah 2007 Recently, the wife and I have been discussing a possible trip to California next year. few of the issues are for how long and where. Of course my choice would be Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley or Russian River Valley, the home of some of the best wines in the world. Oh, I'm sorry, did I leave out Paso Robles, Lodi, Central Coast or Livermore Valley. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 2010 Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel #4 - Inexpensive Provence Reds don't know the exact blend but it's lots of Mourvedre with some Grenache and Cinsault in there. Could be Terrebrune Bandol but younger vines, could be the same wine but a different blend, using less than 50% Mourvedre, I just don't know. Everyone knows that well made Bandol is beautiful and age-worthy wine. Aren't they? Some are, yes. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, MARCH 28, 2010 Rancho Zabaco Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Reserve 2004 I'm leaving Chile(till later) and heading over to California to try a few more Zin's. I'm starting to surprise myself with what I am finding with Zinfandel and also a bit disappointed that I wasted so many years with such a limited selection or narrow palate. Deep dark fruit aromas with some cherry. Hey, you're never too old to learn. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2010 How to Buy Excellent Cheap Wine This is a blend of Mourvedre, Carignan, and Grenache from the western Languedoc. Is it possible to drink great wine on a daily basis if you're not rich? I'm talking about wines that cost between $8 and $12 a bottle? think it it is possible, yes. can (and will) name some cheap wines that I think are excellent wines. or $13.50 Here is one. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 2010 Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere 2008 This is the third of the Carmenere wines I tasted this month. As I stated in my previous two articles, Carmenere is one of the wines I've pushed aside in the past, but have placed on a list to re-examine in 2010. The first two left me with mixed feelings about the wine. did enjoy this with some Muenster and Dubliner cheese. It'll be fun!!! -

This was a standout for me. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, MARCH 7, 2010 Concha y Toro Marques de Casa Concha Carmenere 2007 It's been a few years since I tasted Carmenere. If I remember right, it was a take it or leave it, nothing special, too many other fine wines, don't shop for wine. My last review confirmed that feeling, but in a very serious attempt to expand a lazy palate I purchased a few different labels to compare. The first was disappointing. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2010 Arboleda Carmenère 2006 Wish I had a nice Canadian wine tonight so I could toast the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team on their winning of the Gold medal. am not an avid hockey fan, but I do watch occasionally and tonight enjoyed one of the best ever games. WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2010 Bogle Winery Petite Syrah 2007 Think my taste buds are back. I've been having a few problems with red wines since finishing some prescribed meds a few weeks ago. Bogle Winery 2007. Great value!! -
WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2010 Why Wine: Cline Cellars: Giving Back with Cashmere 2008 One of the great things about social networking is that you often get in contact with friends and classmates from a time when all was great, life was fun and we were all going to live forever. was reminded of just that this past week as I chatted with an old friend and High School classmate from the mid-60's. Here's what I learned. -
WHY WINE BLOG | THURSDAY, JANUARY 21, 2010 Why Wine: Atwater Estate Vineyards Cabernet-Merlot 2007 Sometimes when you least expect it, you open what may becomes your new favorite bottle of wine. WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2010 Why Wine: Lakewood Vineyards Riesling 2007 Big break in weather today here in Central New York. Temperatures will reach about 30F. Must be the annual January thaw! To celebrate I figured to open one of my usually reserved for warm weather whites. My choice is one that was recently purchased at Lakewood Vineyards on Seneca Lake at the December 'Deck the Halls" event. 2007 Riesling. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, JANUARY 4, 2010 Why Wine: Bonterra Vineyards Zinfandel 2007 Somewhere among my 50 New Year's resolutions (99.9% failure rate) was to leave my wine comfort zone more often as I continue to expand my trapped palate. To do so, I will have to taste, I mean drink, more wines that I never tried or wines I just never liked. So, to start off the new year I opened one of my least favorite wines, Zinfandel. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Atwater Estate Vineyards Syrah 2007 Syrah has always been one to those wines I could take or leave it. Almost all that I had ever tasted were the Shiraz from Australia. While visiting Damiani Wine Cellars on Seneca Lake this past spring I tasted an excellent Syrah and I was sold. From that day on I was a fan. enjoyed the Syrah with Shirley's three bean chili. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Fulkerson Winery Dornfelder 2007 This has been one fantastic year of enlightenment for me when it comes to all things wine. Believe I may do a year end article on the subject. If I do, I will have to include the German grape, Dornfelder as one of the highlights. Dornfelder is a cross between Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe grapes. It is the 3rd most planted red wine grape in Germany. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2009 Joeshico Wine Review: Agent For Change Zinfandel 2006 ** Disclaimer: I received these wines from Martellotto Wine s One of the benefits of writing a wine blog is the occasional UPS delivery of wine to taste and review on the blog. It can also be disappointing when the wine received is one that I don't normally drink or one that I have a hard time with. Now Cabs I have no problem with. -

WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Banfi Chianti Classico Reserve 2005 Tonight I added another favorite place to eat in Syracuse, Joey's Italian Restaurant. Shirley and I have been dining here for the last 10 years and it seems that the food just keeps getting better and better. Best of all is the fabulous and always changing wine list. The only downside is the lack of New York wines on the list and no NY reds. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Fox Run Vineyards Reserve Riesling 2008 Sometime near the end of the year, I would like to post all that I have learned and the wines that I have come to enjoy over the past two years. From a European reds only wine drinker who could not tolerate most white wines or any wines over 0% RS, to be even drinking the many wines I am now, I think I have come a long way. -

SLAKED | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2009 TANSTAAFL The 2007 Esprit de Beaucastel * is composed of mourvedre, grenache, syrah, and counoise. Nothing. Zilch. pay for all the wine I review on Slaked! -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Billsboro Winery, Sauvignon Blanc 2008 I think it gets a little scary when you choose a not so good wine for three consecutive nights. When the fourth night comes and you just get home from work and you are looking for a nice wine just to sip, watch a little TV and catch up on a little blog work, you check every bottle in the wine fridge and just can't decide for fear of failing again. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Glenora Wine Cellars Gewurztraminer 2007 Every Friday and Saturday after work, a few friends and I visit our favorite lounge for some great food off the bar menu and to down a few glasses(maybe more than a few) of wine. WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Candoni Chianti DOCG 2007 About two years ago I found a special deal on a gift pack of two wines from Candoni Wines. The gift pack wasn't what sold Shirley and I on the purchase, it was the label. The gift pack included a bottle of Merlot and a bottle of Pinot Grigio, of which we opened at a dinner dance held during my annual military reunion. First, the label. for $11. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Row House Cellars White Table Wine NV Alright, here's my dilemma or at least one of them. Tonight Shirley and daughter Pam are making 'halupkies' for dinner. Halupkies are also known as stuffed cabbage or as we called them in our house as kids growing up in the Pennsylvania coal region, 'blind pigeons.' The dilemma, I have no clue as to what wine to open. That only added to the dilemma. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Ravines Wine Cellars Cabernet Franc 2007 There comes a time when you believe that a certain wine just can't get any better. hope I never get to that point in my lifetime. don't hide the fact that in the past two years I have fallen in love with wines from the Finger Lakes region of New York. have my favorite Finger Lakes wineries and my favorite Finger Lakes wines. The wines are produced with a traditional old-world style. -
WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d' Abruzzo 2005 Riserva I 'm currently making room in my wine cooler for a recent large quantity buy, so I pulled out a Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2005 Riserva for a pizza dinner tonight. had this wine about four years ago and wasn't fully impressed at that time, but thought I'd give it another chance and the price was right. Turned out to be a good move. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Fox Run Gewurztraminer 2007 One of the problems with bringing home lots of wine from a Finger Lakes wine tour is deciding which ones to try first. Shirley helps make that decision easier by planning some meals ahead of time or by just giving me a warning of what's on the menu for the night. Sometimes though, it can be challenging choosing the right wine for the meal. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Anthony Road Semi-dry Riesling 2008 OK, today I sinned again, at least according to some. took my list of New York medal winners to another local wine shop. Unfortunately, I found only one, besides another Anthony Road Vinyards 2008 semi-dry Riesling which I already have in the cooler. Oh yeah, for those who don't know, that wine was judged the most outstanding New York wine for 2009. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, AUGUST 24, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; White Springs Gewurztraminer 2007 Well it's time to try a new wine, at least new to me. Before now I have never tasted Gewurztraminer. Please, no comments on that issue. It took me over 30 years to appreciate any white wine, and now that I do, I am trying them all. The first was OK and will be nice at a evening get-together, but not one I would bring to the party. Great Buy! -

WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, AUGUST 9, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Lindemans Bin 40 Merlot 2007 Looking for great buys in wine? Just look to Australia. Don't know what's going on Down Under but right now some of the best buys for wine are Australian. The Lindeman's Merlot 2007 was recommended by a friend this past week-end. Our wine taste profiles are about 180 deg. apart, so I was a little hesitant, but he hit this one right on the nail. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, AUGUST 9, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Henry Estate Oregon Pinot Noir 2006 Sometimes you just get lucky when searching out a wine. dropped into a local shop this week and during a conversation with the shop owner I had asked if he had any wines from Oregon. He did. He actually had one. It was a Pinot Noir. have had some really nice Pinot's from Oregon before, but they were a bit pricey. Pricey, but good. Great Buy! -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, JULY 27, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Today was a shopping day with Shirley. We did the Home Depot, BJ's, Best Buy, Panera for lunch, two grocery stores and one Mom and Pop wine shop. The 'honey do' list at home was longer. Back to my day job tomorrow. Unfortunately, there were no choices for a good New Zealand Savvie so down the aisles I walked searching for one that interested me. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, JULY 12, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Damiani Wine Cellars Meritage 2007 It seems every winery in the Finger Lakes has a Meritage. Most are nice bordeaux style blends that are very popular and very tasty and very distinct to each winery. Years ago I struggled to find one to like, now I am finding it difficult to taste one I don't like. And then, there comes along one that is over and above any I have tasted before. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, JULY 5, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Heron Hill Cabernet Franc dry Rose' 2006 I know those close to me won't believe this, but I am actually going to review a Rose' wine. In doing so, I am showing them that I can accept the fact that for almost all of my adult life I have been very stupid or as Lenn Thompson said 'Are you nuts.' Yes Lenn, I was nuts. The resulting juice once pressed was the perfect hue of pink. Great Buy! -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Quinta Da Cortezia Reserva 2004 One of the most difficult time's I have on a short vacation is waiting for the train to take me home. WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, JUNE 8, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Heron Hill Eclipse 2004 I have no idea what occurred between the early 1980's and present in the case of New York Finger Lakes red wines. honestly tried many of them between 1973 when I moved into the region until, I gave up on them around 1980. After that, I basically stayed with my favorite European red wines. Her favorite was a red table wine from Heron Hill Wines. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Clos Du Bois Calcaire 2006 I am just going to begin by saying the Clos Du Bois Calcaire 2006 is probably the best Chardonnay I have ever had. Now I'll qualify that statement by saying I do not do white wine that often and that over the years have had probably less or near 100 different Chardonnays and that is really not that many. Made me feel good, I don't win that often. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 29, 2009 Brooklynguy's $20 and Under Case For $14 you can get the 2007 Domaine Rimbert Travers de Marceau , a less intense and complex, but also very delicious wine that omits the Grenache and includes Cinsault and a little bit of Mourvedre. 75% Syrah, some Grenache, Cinsault, and Mourvedre make up the balance. think we have another two years of hard times ahead, maybe more. -
DR. VINO | THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 2009 Randall Grahm - the way back is the way forward - part II But his biggest experiment is with his 2008 wine called Le Cigare Volant, a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. Randall Grahm is one of America’s most fascinating winemakers and winery owners. Puns and cute labels helped make the wines fun and approachable. But Grahm has had a change of heart. More oxygen would soften them up? -

WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, MARCH 9, 2009 WHY WINE: Joeshico Wine Review; Penfolds Bin 2 So, tonight I opened a bottle of Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mourvedre 2006. The 2006 is a blend of 75% Shiraz to 25% Mourvedre. The Mourvedre, a native grape of Spain, gives this wine a dark crimson to purplish color. Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mourvedre, you have changed my opinion of Australian Wines. Now I am totally impressed. -

DR. VINO | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2008 Review roundup - A Year of Wine and Wine Politics Because if it's summer, you'd read it on the porch with a Prosecco, and if it's fall, you'd pop a Mourvedre.. It’s time for a review of some reviews! Thanks to all who have taken time to write their thoughts about one or both of my books; I’m glad they have gotten a warm reception. And an overview of what’s in the book! -

Dave liked its, "deep ruby color with initial aromas of black pepper and ripe plum." -

VIGNA UVA VINO | THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2008 Casa De Las Especias Crianza 2004 There was some speculation that the Monastrell and Mourvedre grape were one in the same, but has since been proven untrue by dna tests Color is a clear, ruby red. On the nose (nadiz) is a luscious fruitiness from the Monastrell, while the mouth (boca) has a floral freshness probably from the Syrah. like this one a lot. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, APRIL 7, 2008 Jenny & Francois Follow Up The blend is Mourvedre, Carignan, and Grenache. I was very much impressed with the Jenny & Francois portfolio , so much so that I decided to buy a few and taste them at home with dinner. I'm happy to tell you that these wines are even better with a meal than they were at the tasting. You know what this means? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2008 Jenny & Francois Portfolio Tasting 45% mourvedre in this one. In case you're not familiar with Jenny & Francois , they import natural wines from all over France, from heavy hitters like Burgundy to unsung heroes like the Côtes de Duras (just northeast of Bordeaux, and considered Southwest France). Maybe it's just odd wine making. Maybe a bit of both. Should be under $20. -
WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2008 Chateauneuf-Du-Pape tasting at Tribeca Grill The base of most however is Grenache, often blended with Mourvedre, Syrah, & Cinsault. This afternoon I attended a fabulous Chateauneuf du Pape (CDP for simplicity) tasting at The Tribeca Grill in downtown Manhattan. The tasting was seemingly co-sponsored by Le Du Wines and Alain Junguenet Selections. quick note about CDP. Tough stuff. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2007 Grocery - My New Favorite Restaurant How could there be so many Mourvedres and not one Loire red wine? And I suppose I should say that now, but I feel like throwing caution to the wind on this one. would include a link but somehow they seem not to have a website. Terrific. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, MAY 25, 2007 Frisbees and Snacks and Wine OH My!! : Part I Then there is a little bit of Cinsaut with some Mourvedre. One coolest thing about life in New York City is central park. It is huge. But the best part is Sheep's Meadow. love sitting in the middle of it just staring at the people and taking in the skyline around me. It always amazes me how quiet the city seems from here. and some munchies. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2007 WBW #33 - Mid-Priced Midi Wines This is hot weather France where hardy grapes thrive, like Grenache and Mourvedre, Cinsault and Carignan, and of course, Syrah. Unfined and unfiltered, aged in wooden barrels, in the 2004 vintage the wine is about equal parts Grenache and Syrah, with some Cinsault and Mourvedre for good measure. Mid-priced Midi wines, if you will. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SATURDAY, MARCH 3, 2007 Red Dessert Wine: Banyuls of Mas Blanc Dry wines from the Collioure appellation, using Syrah, Mourvedre, and Counoise, a couple of whites here and there, and famous sweet wines from Banyuls. It was over a year ago when BrooklynLady and I were talking about dessert wines, how much we love 'em, and how we'd like to taste more of 'em. It's not Port, it's French wine. Sounds good. | |
