    Craggy Range Te Kahu 2009
    First, this is the first New Zealand red wine I have tasted in a least four years. The 2009 Te Kahu is a Bordeaux style blend of 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec. The last was an unimpressive Pinot Noir that, along with some not so favorable press about NZ reds, kept me away from trying anymore.

    The wine in stainless steel barrel tastes bright and ripe, but the new and once used oak adds this complexity that is lost from either lot alone.     Tapiz Malbec 2009
    One of the traditional Bordeaux varietals, Malbec has characteristics that fall somewhere between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In the mouth there was lots of plum, blackberry with some mocha and a little spice that lead to a long finish with taste of black plum, tobacco and spice. The story in Argentina is quite the opposite.

    Salmon Run Meritage 2008
    Merlot. The finish was nice and long, spicy, dry with a taste of currant. Grilled a few NY strip steaks this past week-end and looked forward to opening a nice red wine for change.     Shinn Estate Vineyards Rose` 2010
    A few weeks ago I read a very nice review on the New York Cork Report about a Long Island dry Rose` made with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Aromas were more earthy, a little drier taste and the finish was longer and smoother. This Long Island wine sounded very interesting. Saturday was that day. Wish I had brought more home.

    It's become my practice to taste and blend our wines in June of the year following harvest. Tasting for blending is consuming; a labor-intensive labor of love. Merlot from Oak Knoll and 1.7% Some wineries blend earlier, but I find that I enjoy the blending process just as the wines turn away from their sixth month in barrel.

    The first grapes were hand-picked on the 27th of September (6 days later than 2009) and the harvest of Merlot grapes lasted until the first of October. During dinner, we tasted several vintages of Chateau Beycheville: the 2003, 1999, 1985, and 1978. On the palate, soft flavors of black licorice and vanilla.

    Cinnabar Mercury Rising 2008
    The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Peite Verdot and Malbec was again delightful.     nicely balanced Merlot with med acidity and tannins and on the palate bright raspberry flavors and a finish of glycerine and dried flowers with a good long finish. Enjoyed this at BOE tasting Clear ruby color with medium intensity, aromas are clean and slightly pronounced with jammy resins, vanilla bean, red fruit and dark berries.

    Is was founded in 1989 by Yiannis and Amalia Tselepos , who planted the first cabernet sauvignon and merlot vines on the foothills of Mt. In the mouth there was a flat citrus taste. Tonight I opened my first Greek wine and another new white wine grape to add to my growing list of new wines. The grape is Moschofilero.

    Concannon Conservancy Petite Sirah 2008
    The Conservancy collection includes Pitite Sirah, Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Felt good in the mouth with soft tannins and taste of cherry, black plums and some toasty oak. Last year I reviewed a 2007 Petite Sirah from Concannon Vineyard , so I was delighted to recently receive the 2008 vintage. The wine was perfect.

    Tasting Notes This Week
    What I'm drinking now is 2005 Montefalco rosso from Arnaldo Caprai -- blind tasting it initially, I knew it was italian from its (to me) signature high acidity and soil that seemed somehow volcanic. The Montefalco is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, and 15% of Merlot. montefalco. Also, the cherry flavor spoke of Italy.
