    A Day In the Finger Lakes 6 - Keuka Lake
    We did not taste the Merlot or the Lemberger, but were amazed with the Gruner Veltliner and the Pinot Noir. Finally got to do something other than working around the house on my week off. Shirley, I and our good friend Mark did a little day trip south on rte 54A and then around the South end of Keuka Lake to head North on rte 54.

    Shinn Estate Vineyards Rose` 2010
    A few weeks ago I read a very nice review on the New York Cork Report about a Long Island dry Rose` made with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. It's only been about three years since I started to appreciate Rose` wine and they have all been 100% Finger Lakes Cab/Franc. This Long Island wine sounded very interesting. Saturday was that day.

    Fattorie Gianozzi Villa Marcialla Chianti Colli Fiorentini Riserva 2007 DOCG
    At the Fattorie Gianozzi just south of Florence in the district of Barberino Val d'Elsa, this Chianti is made with 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. After fermentation, macerated in stainless steel barrels for 3-8 days, then aged in big oak barrels, which mutes the wood effects, for 26 months and another six months in bottle. Good soft finish.

    The Show is a big, rich, deep Cabernet, although according to the website there are also small quantities of Merlot for softness, Cabernet Franc for earthiness and acidity, and even Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot to give it a deep ruby color. all aged in French and American oak. Big is the key descriptor here. Good bang for the buck.

Last year I reviewed a 2007 Petite Sirah from Concannon Vineyard , so I was delighted to recently receive the 2008 vintage. In 1996, Concannon was the first Livermore Valley vineyard to place its land into a permanent conservation easement.

    lot to like about merlot here. Deep ruby purple color with good brilliance, almost opaque. Took a while to open up. On the nose tight still: potpourri and minerality combined.     really enjoyed the Valcalepio Rosso Riserva which is a 50-50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, vinified separately in stainless steel tanks, then a minimum aging of 3 years in French oak casks, and finally 3 months in bottle.
