This is the kind of malbec I used to seek out before they were wiped out. 2004 Malbec was dense but not thick. Big suprise. haven't been able to drink Argentine wine in years. Same old story. All of their gorgeous, exotic wines where plunked and corseted and hormoned and frankly, down the drain. Then David Bowler said, try this. Yeast?

Capture's small-production wines are hand-crafted (I HATE THAT WORD WHEN IT COMES TO WINE) by the wife and husband winemaking team of May-Britt and Denis Malbec, formerly of Chateau Latour in Bordeaux, who are dedicated to creating the finest Bordeaux-style artisan wines from California grapes, (WAIT, BORDEAUX-STYLE MEANING WHAT? ARTISAN?

With 7% malbec and 3% merlot, aged in both new and old French oak for 18 months, this wine reminded me of aged Monte Bello: cedar and pine on the nose, with a smooth texture yet dry tannin, crisp raspberry and light notes of mint and semi-sweet dark chocolate on the finish. balanced and elegant wine.

From Mendoza comes this wonderful Malbec that seems to be thriving in the dryer climates of Argentina. Deep purple hues preview aromas of violets, figs and chocolate with faint layers of green peppers.

Yellow + Blue Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina (about $11 for one liter; find this wine ). “Merry Christmas!&# I said to my aunt as she greeted us at the door for our annual wintry get together with my cousins. “Here’s 24 liters of wine!&# Season’s greetings! Here are the reds continued from previous post : Cuma Malbec. Last Saturday Dan Olson hosted an Organic Wine & Cheese Pairing at The Wine Room of Forest Hills. Argentina. Rich ruby color with full bouquet of boysenberry, blueberries and oak. Dry and full bodied with spicy cherry flavors. paired with Les Freres. Crave Brothers. Chile. Spain.

Those are: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot & Malbec. I'm sorry for the delay in writing this post.  I have gotten MANY requests for my Rosh Hashana suggestions.  I'm pressed for time (aren't we all) so here goes. decided not to write about wines that typically retail for more than $30.  Let's start with Carmel. 

This Pine Ridge 2005 Carneros Merlot from the Napa Valley/Carneros region of California is 98% Merlot , 1% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec and aged 15 months in French oak barrels. It shows dark aromas of blackberries, cherry and blueberry with notes of coffee, tobacco and cedar. SRP is $45.

After some testing and some clone experimentation she decided to not only plant Montepulciano but Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot; all varietals from in and around the Bordeaux region. The blend is pretty unique; it is made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petite Verdot. Until now.

The Puzelats grow Pinot Noir, Gamay, Côt (called Malbec in Argentina), Bréton (called Cabernet Franc in the film Sideways ), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris (called Pinot Grigio in Italy), and the rarely seen Pineau D'Aunis and Menu Pineau (called Arbois in the Jura). They buzz with energy, some say "wildness." Everything is good.

We then tried the 2004 Sonoma county "tre'sor", a bordeaux blend containing all 5 varietals, 63% Cab, 16% Malbec, 11% Petit Verdot, 6% Cab Franc & 4% Merlot. Woke up at the hotel bright and early.OK, maybe not THAT early, and went to the hotel courtyard for a "continental breakfast" of cereal, fresh pastries & coffee. Great stuff!

Reds: 2006 Clos Roche Blanche Touraine Pif, $14, Louis/Dressner Selections (blend of old vines Malbec, young Cabernet Franc). For several months now the Euro is comfortably in the 1.5 range. Yup, it costs over $1.50 to buy one Euro. This isn't going to change tomorrow or next month - we're going to live with this for a while I bet. So there.

Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 This Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, California is made from 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petite Sirah, 5% Syrah, 4% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot and 1% Malbec- quite an intense mix, but it works. Here are 7 of my most recent favorite inexpensive but good wines. alcohol. We are in the $12 range.

The 2005 Altus Napa Cab was blended with 5% Malbec, Petit Verdot & Merlot (3 of the Bordeaux varietals) and was aged in 80% new medium toasted oak (a high percentage). Also from Merus was their '05 Merus Cab blended with 5% Petit Verdot & Malbec. This could help to make events of this size more manageable. don't know.

This Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, California is made from 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petite Sirah, 5% Syrah , 4% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot and 1% Malbec -- quite an intense mix, but it works. Stainless steel fermentation, then 14-16 months in oak casks. a glass. alcohol

And this is Malbec we're talking about, with a little bit (5%) of Tannat thrown in. I was very much impressed with the Jenny & Francois portfolio , so much so that I decided to buy a few and taste them at home with dinner. I'm happy to tell you that these wines are even better with a meal than they were at the tasting.
