    Mcgregor Vineyards Merlot Reserve 2007
    Merlot is another one of many wines that I can 'take it' or 'leave it.' This past year, I have tried a few from Long Island, where Merlot seems to be king, but was not impressed. also have not, until now, found a Finger Lakes Merlot that pleased the palate.     Year in Review
    BUT, the best this year is from Long Island. delightful blend of Merlot and Cab Franc. Aroma's were plentiful with honeysuckle, pineapple, apple blossom, some peach and citrus, a fruit filled taste and a very long finish. I guess saying that 2011 was not as eventful as 2010 would be understating it a little.

    And the Macari Rose 2010 from Long Island's North Fork is a case in point. And ending happily with a smooth and long finish. merlot, 14.5% To me, sometimes fruit is a better thirst quencher than a simple glass of water. The wonderful wet aromas of a freshly cut watermelon. luscious ripe strawberries picked this morning.

    Shinn Estate Vineyards Rose` 2010
    A few weeks ago I read a very nice review on the New York Cork Report about a Long Island dry Rose` made with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. This Long Island wine sounded very interesting. Rose' New York Long IslandSaturday was that day. The color was a darker than ususal in the glass.

    On a recent visit to New York City, my wife was able to find some wines from Long Island and I was anticipating more than what I got. don't post articles on wines I don't favor so I will just say that I will get back to Long Island in the spring.     My favorite North Fork of Long Island producer and this is my favorite Shinn wine. Made mostly of Merlot, although I do not know the exact blend. Another wine from the north Fork of Long Island, another Merlot blend, but this one is not in the same class as the Shinn wine. Really a lovely wine.

    Or slightly less scientific because of the inclusion of several vintages, Washington State Merlots: 25 Merlots, all Washington State. Not scientific, by any means - there might be 5 or 6 vintages, wines made mostly from Merlot and others made mostly from Cabernet Franc, and others that are blends.

You probably know by now that Lenn Thompson is a great resource for learning about Long Island wines. Their Merlot wine is well known as one of the North Fork's best wines. Delicious!

    Some New York Wines
    In August my wife and I took a short trip to the North Fork of Long Island to explore and to taste some wine. The 2000 Estate Selection Merlot is an excellent Bordeaux-styled wine, with plummy and earthy aromas, a light texture, and lots of dark fruit on the palate. Their unoaked 2005 Estate Sauvignon Blanc was fresh and lively.
