    A Perfect Spring Lunch
It's mostly Cinsault and Grenache, with little bits of things like Syrah and Rolle (aka Vermentino). It's finally spring in New York. That two weeks in early April when all of the sudden it was 75 degrees and the cherry trees blossomed early and everyone wore shorts, no, that wasn't spring. Anyway, now, it's spring. It's quite good."

On his trip through France in 1787 Thomas Jefferson visited Vidal-Fleury, today considered one of the most consistent producers in the Rhone Valley. What a great price and value?!? and shipping was free.

It was a red fruit mash at first - I would have guessed a Grenache heavy wine from further south had I tasted it blind. This one took the longest to come around, but when it did it was a classic old school bloody, meaty, black olivey, and very mineral northern Rhône Syrah. cannot tell you how excited I am about this. Where on earth is Aragon?
The reds were mostly blends, with Garnacha (grenache) the most popular varietal used. Also used in the wines/blends was Tempranillo, Carignan, Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Tinta del Pais (which I learned is really just another name for Tempranillo). But I found out today. It is in Spain. The tasting itself was very nice. The "8.0.1

Interview with winemaker Luc Baudet from Chateau Mas Neuf
It has benefited from several centuries history of vine breeding and winemaking, and has the ability to grow in an unique way three fantastic grape varieties, the Syrah in the North, the Grenache and Mourvèdre in the South. Terroir is a three fold concept: The most obvious first two are soils (and their interaction with vines.)

Chateau Mas Neuf Costieres de Nimes Tradition Red 2006
Deep purple rose in color, It is a blend of 60% Syrah , 20% Grenache , 10% Mourvedre and 10% Carignan and is designed to go well with food, especially duck or lamb. I sampled this French red wine at the Alsace & Rhone Wine Expo this week, poured by the vintner, Luc Baudet. Enjoyed this one very much

Domaine De Coste Chaude Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan L'Argentiiere 2005
From Rhone, France comes this blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah produced by Marianne & Marc Fues, whom I met at the Alsace & Rhone Valley Wine Expo earlier this week in NYC. Marc told me the oak the wine is aged in (for 12 months) comes from many different regions, giving it an interesting character.

    Polaner tasting standouts
Interestingly enough, they make a 100% grenache wine called the (2005) St. Syrahs & 2 Cab's were tried at the tasting. The least cost prohibitive wine of the bunch was the 2006 Arnot-Roberts Syrah Clary Ranch and the one I found most interesting. Zinfandels and 1 Syrah. don't know. And there was 1 rose' that I tried.
  • VIGNA UVA VINO  |  FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 2008

    Jenny & Francois Follow Up
The blend is Mourvedre, Carignan, and Grenache. This is a blend of Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache. I was very much impressed with the Jenny & Francois portfolio , so much so that I decided to buy a few and taste them at home with dinner. You know what this means? But these wines are graceful and perfumed, elegant sometimes.

Kosher Wine Extravaganza - Unusual (but gooood) wines
Merlot, Cab, Syrah - been there done that. lighter wine than a Cab, merlot or Syrah, Barbera is said to be the most (or second most) planter varietal in Italy. It is used in blends (often with Rhone varietals such as grenache & Syrah) to add color to red wines. Come on Wine Tasting Guy, give us something unusual.

An Imaginary Wine Vacation in Bandol
In addition to Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Grenache are also widely used, and Syrah and Carignan can be included in smaller amounts, up to 10% individually or up to 15% when they're both included. The dollar sucks and my daughter is only 1 year old. I'll answer for you - yes, it would be nice. But that ain't happenin' for me anytime soon.

    Chateauneuf-Du-Pape tasting at Tribeca Grill
The base of most however is Grenache, often blended with Mourvedre, Syrah, & Cinsault. This blend of 45% Roussane, 30% Grenache, 15% Clairette, & 5% each Bourboulenc & Picpoul (please don't ask me to pronounce these unusual varietals). This was not one of those HUGE industry tastings. quick note about CDP.

By the Glass - Restaurant and Wine Bar Edition
Mostly Carignan, with some Grenache and Syrah thrown in, the 2005 Domaine des 2 Anes Corbieres Fontanilles was smooth and supple, ripe and complex. 100% Syrah, it is a Vins de Pays de L'Ardeche, a country wine from the hilly region in the middle of the Rhone Valley, sort of bisecting it into Northern and Southern Rhone.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN MAY I PRESENT TO YOU THE ALPHABET CITY WINE CO. WINE STARTER KIT. Inquire within or by phone: (212) 505-WINE

So the Alphabet City Wine Co. has been open for about a month now and all is well. Can you tell? Cheers

Frisbees and Snacks and Wine OH My!! : Part I
It starts out with primarily shiraz (syrah) and a good amount of the South African original, pinotage, a viticultural cross of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir created in the 1920's. After that add a little Grenache and some merlot and round it off with small percentages of Gamay (really?) It is huge. But the best part is Sheep's Meadow. Cheer

    WBW #33 - Mid-Priced Midi Wines
This is hot weather France where hardy grapes thrive, like Grenache and Mourvedre, Cinsault and Carignan, and of course, Syrah. Do they permit varying percentages of Syrah, for example, or it is an elevation and wind thing? Here we are again folks, Wine Blogging Wednesday is upon us once more. Mid-priced Midi wines, if you will.

Notes From the Dressner Real Wine Attack Tasting
My 5's 2004 Eric Texier Cote-Rotie , $62 - This Northern Rhone Syrah was lighter than his other reds, incredibly intense nose of roasted meat and herbs, olives and soil. 100% Syrah from the resurrected Brezeme vineyard, this is light in color, but intense with plums, herbs, and tar, and really well balanced with nice acidity and low alcohol.

Red Dessert Wine: Banyuls of Mas Blanc
The vineyards are drenched in hot sun and there is not a lot of rain, perfect for hardy grapes like Carignan and Grenache. They must contain a minimum of 50% Grenache to be called Banyuls (the fishing port south on the southern coast of Perpignan) or Maury (the hilly northern coast). It's not Port, it's French wine. Red dessert wine?

    Fada!
The grapes grown here are Grenache, syrah, mouverde and cinsaut. The Vacqueyras we had was a blend of Syrah mostly and grenache and surprisingly some gamay according to the owner. It smoothed out the rough edges of the syrah and granache wonderfully. All I have to say is Fada. wanted me some Rhone. They were great.
