[Golan Heights, Israel] Good times for Israel wines
Having followed Israel wines for many years I knew this day would come. And more recently Israel earned its own chapter in the latest release (7th Edition) of " Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide" - a whole NINE pages - as many as New Zealand and more than South Africa! The Golan Heights winery's Yarden 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon came in at 91. Having worked at Israeli wineries I was sure that others would eventually acknowledge the high quality of up-and-coming Israeli wines.

[Golan Heights, Israel] Wine starts in the Vineyard - Golan Heights Winery
Made a trip back up to the Golan Heights today. Making wines exclusively grown in the Golan Heights region on its volcanic soils (a result of two volvano eruptions - the most recent a short million years ago), GHW (Golan Heights Winery) grows 22 varietals and produces close to 30 wines. Starting with the whites I was quite impressed by the quality of the entry level 2007 Golan Sion Creek White.

[Golan Heights, Israel] Golan day, tanks, and NYC kosher crush
Spent the day in and around the Golan Heights today. It is wild how you can see Syria as you drive many of the high altitude roads of the Golan Heights. Visiting wineries up in The Golan Heights getting caught behind TANKS that are being transported. It is really spectacular there. Just across the border from Syria. That same high altitude by the way is one of the factors that contributes to its being a prime grape growing region.

    [Golan Heights, Israel] Blending Wines.
Time does fly when you are having fun, but I have been doing SO MUCH running around that I can't believe I have only been in Israel for 1 week so far (OK, 9 days). I'm headed up North tomorrow to the Galil region which includes the highly regarded Galil & Golan Heights viticultural sections. Has it only been a week?

[Golan Heights, Israel] Carmel's quality wine revolution
Among the many things I must do is to better acquaint myself with one of Israel's oldest wineries - Carmel. I have heard some criticism regarding the high alcohol levels of some of Israels wines. As is being done at the Israel wine revolution leader Golan Heights Winery (AKA Yarden), Carmel is trying to get away from being labeled as kosher, and doing everything possible to instead be considered a World Class winery whose wines JUST SO HAPPEN to also be kosher.

[Golan Heights, Israel] Wines for the New (Jewish) Year UNDER $30
The last Israeli wine I want to mention is a wine I recently tried for the first time, the Golan Cabernet Sauvignon. The Golan Cab was featured by wine writer Howard Goldberg in the NY Times in August , and as it turns out is a damn good wine. I'm sorry for the delay in writing this post. I have gotten MANY requests for my Rosh Hashana suggestions. I'm pressed for time (aren't we all) so here goes. I decided not to write about wines that typically retail for more than $30.

[Golan Heights, Israel] Misinformed - what to do with a bad wine educator?
Among the instructor's opening statements was a proclamation that the Israeli wine industry took a major step forward with the introduction of the Golan Heights Winery 15 years ago (it was more like 25 years ago). I attended an Israeli wine tasting at a local cultural center earlier this week. The instructor spoke both about the Israeli wine industry as well as basic wine appreciation.

[Golan Heights, Israel] Yarden Odem Chardonnay 2006 Organic Vineyard Israel
This Chardonnay is a tasty wine from the Golan Heights in Israel. It is the color of pale gold and has an aroma of flowers, with a hint of banana. Pear and citrus with a bit of oak permeate the palate and leave me with a buttery finish of vanilla ice cream and spiced apples. I don't read Hebrew but I believe this wine is Kosher

[Golan Heights, Israel] Best bet (kosher) Israeli wines for Passover - at all price ranges.
The last wine I want to bring up in this category comes from the Golan Heights Winery, famous for its Yarden wines. Well regarded throughout Israel, Recanati produces some fine wines. 2002 however was not a great vintage in Israel in general with some strange weather so if you are considering a case to put away for a few years I would stick with the 2003 or 2004.

[Golan Heights, Israel] Israeli Wine - Wine Advocate " Modern Israel: A Survey (A Work in Progress)"
Well ladies and gentlemen, the results are in. I will be copying a list of wines & their scores from Israeli Wine Critic Daniel Rogov's "Wine & Food Forum". I am waiting for my physical copy of the issue to arrive before I comment specifically. The only thing I would like to share is my excitement for a 92 score given to a wine I worked on - The TZORA "Or" dessert wine.
