DR. VINO | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2012 Where are the thirst-quenching domestic reds? Sommelier Raj Parr is teaming up with Arnot-Roberts to make a gamay. The French have a wine term that doesn’t translate. No, it’s not terroir. It’s vin de soif. wine that’s thirst-quenching is a fun drink that accompanies food or a moment but doesn’t dominate them. It’s lowish in alcohol and in price. -
DR. VINO | FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 2012 The vegetarian challenge for wine – and a tip of the toque to Charlie Trotter Granted, by picking the right reds–lighter varieties such as pinot noir, gamay, or poulsard–or the right vegetables–mushrooms or lentils–the problems are surmountable and the results rewarding. A WINE STORY | MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2011 A Private Visit to the House of Bollinger A few minutes later, we see some more experimental vines including Savignan, the grape from the Jura area, and Gamay. Ah, Bollinger … Established in 1829 in Ay, France, it’s almost impossible to know the magic of this incredible Champagne house until one has experienced a tour led by M. Outside Bollinger, we were met by M. Bollinger herself. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2011 In Defense of Red Wine This one is made of Gamay and Pinot Noir. I've been having a hard time with red wine lately. Okay, I never have a problem with mature Burgundy, or mature red wine in general. But when I'm alone and I feel like opening something to drink with dinner, or to just have a glass, I almost always reach for white wine these days. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2011 More Wines for Thanksgiving Maison Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages, 2009 France The grapes (Gamay) are gently crushed, an extended maceration of 12-20 days gets you the extraction of color and tannins, then aged in French oak for 8 to 10 months. A WINE STORY | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2011 Discovering Beajuolais: Gamay & Chardonnay (A Tweet Up) After all, Beaujolais, south of Burgundy, is home to the red wine grape Gamay, with the area known for its signature soils. Its red fruits, hints of red licorice, and violets make the Gamay even better in the company of salmon, tuna, chicken, turkey, veal, and fine cheeses. DR. VINO | THURSDAY, APRIL 21, 2011 Which reds would you cellar beyond Bordeaux? Fleurie from the edge of Moulin-a-Vent, this is more pinot-like than gamay, structure and elegance over fruit and ebullience. With all the hype about the Bordeaux campaign to pre-selling their 2010 wines, it made me think: surely there are more affordable, just as age-worthy alternatives out there. And around $30 a bottle? Under $30. Roda I. -
DR. VINO | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2011 The G Spot, The Titanic, Verdehlgold – punny French labels! gamay from Emile Heredia of Domaine de Montrieux in the Coteaux du Vendômois. All too often, French labels are stuffy. However, when it comes to good vin de table wines, puns and word play abound. Consider these from the Loire: This is a tasty yet tannic (thanks six-month maceration!) It’s labeled simply “G. With a spot over it. -
A WINE STORY | FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 2011 Lunch with Inniskillin Bruce Nicholson The Inniskillin winery itself was created in 1975 by Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser, across the street on 32 acres of Riesling, Chardonnay, and Gamay. so I am in Canada to celebrate the Icewine festival. DR. VINO | FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 2011 Two memorable wines under $15 from 2010 It’s been a house staple here for a while but this vintage is particularly good, maintaining the snappy acidity of gamay but having a little more roundness thanks to the vintage. It’s a blend of gamay and pinot noir, made in a natural style. As is the nature of such lists, they generally skew to the fine and rare. The J.-P. -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2010 Gamay vs. (Loire) Cabernet Franc As a student in various wine educational programs, yes, I have – and when faced with several wines fitting this description, it can often be choosing between Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Cabernet Franc (assuming it is traditional old world varieties). would not know if they were Gamay, Pinot Noir, or Cabernet Franc. color: purple. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2010 Foillard Fleurie This wine opened slowly, as Foillard's wines tend to do, the nose building to a crescendo of ripe Gamay fruit and flowers, wet stone underneath. I love Jean Foillard's wines. There are many great Beaujolais wines, but if I were forced to choose only one to drink (and thank goodness I am not), I would choose Foillard's wines. You know, 3.14 -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2010 A Visit to Domaine Langoureau during Hospices De Beaune Weekend 2010 The day begins at Domaine Langoureau in Saint Aubin, a white wine region with two small towns, Saint-Aubin and Gamay. The terroir lies between Gamay and the village of Saint-Aubin, with east-facing plots on a slope with clay limestone soil. As Jeanne-Marie drives toward the Chateau, I am a bit surprised. No Coats Needed in the Cellar. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2010 JD Headrick's Wines at Rouge Tomate 2007 Claux Delorme Valençay , about $16, is a delicious blend of Malbec, Gamay, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir. I was very fortunate to be invited to dinner by JD Headrick , the philosophical and articulate wine importer based in North Carolina. Headrick's portfolio is small, but well selected. Very fragrant, it really lingers on the finish. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2010 Delicious and Expressive of Place.for $10 It is also unmistakably Gamay from Beaujolais - you could identify this blindfolded simply by smelling it. Who says there's nothing good out there for about $10? There are good wines at that price point but they're harder to find than I can ever remember. What do I mean by "good?" drank two very good wines recently that cost me all of $10.80 -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2010 The $12 natural gamay showdown: Lapierre vs Puzelat Each of them made a reasonably priced gamay in the acclaimed 2009 vintage; I bought each for about $12 at Astor Wines and then tasted them head to head. The light red wine has that fun, fruitiness of gamay made with carbonic maceration while having enough structure to be more than simply thirst quenching. -
DR. VINO | MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 2010 Red wines that chill The key is to choose a red wine that is low in tannin, which explains why Beaujolais from the thin-skinned Gamay grape, often is the prime red candidate for chilling. The Puzelat brothers–leading natural winemakers–have made this delicious blend that combines the fruit and fun of gamay with a bit of the structure of pinot noir. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SATURDAY, AUGUST 7, 2010 A Couple More New Vintages This is practically waifish with a refinement that is already very pinot noir-like in the fashion of Burgundies with an Audrey Hepburn figure, but the flavors show gamay's tart wild-berry side seasoned with something I find myself calling "mealy" for lack of a better term, kind of reminiscent of cereal and multigrain, already past the primary. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, AUGUST 1, 2010 New Vintages You blend Pinot Noir and Gamay somewhere near Touraine and you can make a decent wine. Some of my favorite wines have just been released in new vintages. Buy the wines and drink them. Sure, pick a few that you are most interested in and lay a couple of bottles down, but these wines are drinking beautifully right now. Don't miss it. Pure joy. -
A WINE STORY | SATURDAY, JULY 17, 2010 Tasting Notes: Delicious New Wines from Arancio With its soft and delicate structure you can pair it with foods as you would a Loire Gamay. Grillo is a white grape from Sicily that red wine drinkers would love! Something about this strong-willed grape that pairs well with firm, white fleshed fish such as swordfish or chicken with exotic spices. Let's take the white first. -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 2010 Lafarge Bourgogne and Passetoutgrain 2007s Passetoutgrain is the rare red Burgundy that allows grapes other than pinot noir in the wine since it is a blend that includes gamay. The resulting wine combines the gulpability of gamay with the structure of pinot. Then our neighbor dropped by to collect his son and, in no time flat, the bottle was empty. Our sipping wine got gulped! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2009 What to Eat and Drink when you Cannot Drink Wine simple country wine, a Gamay from the Côte Roannaise, and it was delicious. Last week, for the first time in several years, I was really sick. didn't have a drop of wine for five days. Sounds crazy, but it's true. Imagine not drinking wine for five whole days! You'd have to be in prison, or shipwrecked, or completely knocked out with the flu. -
ALICE FEIRING | SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2009 Kant Would Have Something To Say/Vin Naturel & Suckling Puzelat La Guerriere (cot & gamay) my choice. ++ It was love. I'm not sure opposites attract. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2009 Wine of the Week - Jean Foillard Morgon The wines are quite obviously sisters, but they offer a different expression of Morgon Gamay. If I were putting together a Noah's Ark of wine, Jean Foillard's Morgons would represent the Beaujolais species. There are many lovable Beaujolais wines, but I love these the most. But when aFoillard Morgon opens up, it can be a very beautiful thing. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2009 Wine of the Week - Claux Delorme Valençay As in Cheverny, red wines from Valençay contain several grapes, typically some blend of Gamay, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Cabernet Franc. The 2006 vintage is 40% Gamay, 30% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Pinot Noir. the spiciness of the Pinot…the juicy "drink me" quality of the Gamay….and And it is inexpensive, too - under $20. -

DR. VINO | FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2009 Three light, rewarding reds under $20: Produttori, Pataille, Michaud But the practice gets a big “oui in the appellation of Bourgogne-Passetoutgrains where the wines must be only one-third pinot noir with the balance the gamay grape. This straight up gamay (as opposed to the Passetougrains) from the strong vintage 2006 has a slight savory note to it as well as wild strawberries. Lot: 8.143. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, JULY 14, 2009 Chess, Jazz, Baseball, and finally, Cheese. She picked a declassified Cheverny, now a Vin de Table, a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir by Christian Venier,a Loire hipster-natural-wine-biodynamic-producer. Pairing wine and food is something that, if approached seriously and with the right balance of art and science, can produce thrilling results. Overcompensating probably. So there. -
ALICE FEIRING | FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 2009 A Quiet Refuge We slurped back some delicious gamay from Christian Venier (Savio Soares, importer) and snuck in a little guerilla questioning to the young woman who asked for the VdT why she was here. DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2009 Tasty American wine under $12: why so little of it? Industry replies, part I The home of Gamay is Beaujolais, the home of Pinot is Burgundy. Drawing on the New Yorker profile of Fred Franzia, champion of wine under $10, last week we pondered the puzzle of why so few low-cost wines–say under $10 (or, perhaps, $15)–made in America are just not tasty. Over 30 of you had your say in the post from last week. -
ALICE FEIRING | MONDAY, MAY 18, 2009 Jenny & Francois Didier Monchovet Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire (tart, berry gamay) and a kick-ass cremant. Briefly noted picks. Domaine Derain (St. Aubin, Burgundy) Love their PetNat (sparkling Aligote) and the 2006 Le Bon as well as the '06 Mercurey which was tar and marshmallow. This one works Domaine Binner Everything from this Alsatian domaine is lovely. -
ALICE FEIRING | SUNDAY, MAY 17, 2009 Jenny & Francois & David Bowler Anyway, they do a completely charming Bourgone Grand Ordinaire (gamay) and a kick ass cremant and a 2003 hautes cotes de beaune very worth drinking. One of these days, I'll take a good note. But here are some picks from their terrific tasting. Derain: in St. Aubin, I visited Domique with Jenny & F in the winter. One of those Alsatian blends. -
DR. Perhaps. rate it 100 points. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2008 Why I Hate/Love New York Other goodies too, like Gonon St Joseph, Brick House Gamay, Binner Pinot Noir.what fun! I'm not going to sugar-coat it for you, folks. grew up here and I understand its appeal, but New York City makes me crazy sometimes. DR. VINO | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2008 Cru Beaujolais: some factoids Gamay is wildly food friendly! In 1395, Duke Philip the Bold outlawed the humble gamay grape from Burgundy, protecting the premium pinot noir by fiat. A few quick things about cru Beaujolais, the smaller, distinctive growing areas of Beaujolais. The Burgundy producers are coming! Prices are relatively low for grapes and real estate. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2008 CHAMARRE NOUVEAU UNCORKED AT AZZA LOUNGE It is one of the most popular wines in France, normally made from Gamay grapes and fermented for just a few weeks then officially released for sale on the third Wednesday of November. Wednesday, November 12, 2008, NYC. Chamarre slightly twists the concept with a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Syrah from different regions of France. -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2008 Is “light as a wine term the kiss of death? Pinot noir, gamay, barbera all make food-friendly wines that can be light in style as compared to, say, cabernet sauvingnon or zinfandel, which are fuller bodied (and often higher in alcohol). I like light reds. Talking about the flavor profile of wines, from light to full bodied is, in my view, a really constructive way to talk about wine. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2008 Bad Wine Lately At 50-50 Pinot/Gamay it felt like it was trying too hard, a bit overpowering. I'm talking about wines from places and producers that I've liked in the past, things that I expected to like. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 By the Glass - Purity Edition It's lovely right upon opening, but with a little airtime there are incredibly well defined aromas of pure and clean Gamay fruit, iron, and very mild brett. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2007 The Finest Value Red of the Season Actually, it's a blend of Pinot and Gamay, so maybe instead I should say that it's the finest under $15 red wine of the season. ALICE FEIRING | TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2007 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas Clos Roche Blance 2005 Gamay and the Pepiere 2005 Muscadet. All of the wines were as natural a babys bottom. The mystery wine was to be paired against a 2003 Tuscan IGT from Montesecondo. When the moment came, and the women tasted the wines, I took a vote on preference. More than half the room preferred the shiraz! was crestfallen. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, MAY 31, 2006 Fada! The Vacqueyras we had was a blend of Syrah mostly and grenache and surprisingly some gamay according to the owner. Upon my initial sip I could see why the Gamay was in there. All I have to say is Fada. This little French bistro in Williamsburg (I put the link in the title of this post) on North 8th and Driggs is absolutely awesome! | |
