By the Glass - Top Quality Muscadet Edition
This is Guy Bossard's sparkling wine, made mostly of Melon de Bourgogne (the Muscadet grape), but there is also some Gros-Plant and Cabernet Franc in the blend. I tend to think of Muscadet as a winter white wine, a wine to drink on a cold January night with a plate of raw oysters. Perhaps even the seafood stereotype entirely.

Wine of the Week - Bernard Baudry's Rosé
It was November of 2005, BrooklynLady and I went to France together for the first time. They are transparent in the truest sense of the word - the fruit is exceptionally pure and clean, the sense of soil is prominent, and changes in character with each cuvée, reflecting the specific terroir. Which is a good thing.

Sustainable production and a willingness to invest in the future ensures that this approach will continue to deliver fine wines which fully reflect the fruit of the variety and the terroir of the land. I really enjoy shopping for wine and finding one that I never tried and end up putting it on my list of must have wines. This wine is awesome!

Wine of the Week - Tissot Arbois Poulsard
The Jura, in eastern France right near Switzerland, is only place I know of where Poulsard is grown. There are over 25 different wines produced, as the Tissots believe in expressing as best they can the diverse terroir of the Jura. 2006 Domaine Tissot Arbois Poulsard Vieille Vignes , $18, Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons.

Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Clos Du Bois Calcaire 2006
Cooled by Pacific fog, the Russian River Valley's extended growing season makes it one of the world's ideal terroirs for nurturing extraordinary Chardonnay. I am just going to begin by saying the Clos Du Bois Calcaire 2006 is probably the best Chardonnay I have ever had. Made me feel good, I don't win that often. Drink now through 2011."

Perhaps because some of these wine hipsters claim that the expression of terroir in Champagne is possible only in non-dosé wines. 05 was warm in Champagne, as in most of France, and so Boulard had a cooperative climate to work with for this style of wine. But it is not easy to make a good non-dosé Champagne.

Tasty American wine under $12: why so little of it? Industry replies, part I
am not sure I have an answer to your question but reading through the various comments I didn’t see anyone, except Paul Gregutt, mention the importance of where the grapes actually grow (we call it terroir ) and vineyard yields. In France, by law, yields are controlled. Over 30 of you had your say in the post from last week.

    1989 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello
If it weren't for Monte Bello, I wouldn't believe in that greatest of vinous marketing stunts, the theory of terroir. Perhaps if I drank La Tache often enough I would understand terroir differently. Mouton Rothschild) can have terroir in the same sense a 15 acre vineyard can (e.g. La Tache). It's pure marketing.

Technique and Terroir in the Jura
One of the confusing and intriguing things about Jura wines is the distinction between technique and terroir. wonder, though, whether they are more an expression of technique or of terroir. And the good producers are quite interested in and adept at making wines that showcase terroir over grape character. About soil and place?

Domaine de Bellivière - Keeping it Real in the Northern Loire
The northern most vineyards in western France are in the Loire Valley appellations of Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir. But in general I prefer Bellivière's Coteaux du Loir wines because of their unique terroir stamp. The Chenin Blancs from these places have never been as sought after as those from Vouvray, Montlouis, or Savennières.

Perhaps the finest and most memorable lesson that I received in Burgundy terroir came at the hands of Pierre Morey. And we were thrilled and awed.

Interview with winemaker Luc Baudet from Chateau Mas Neuf
Your interest in the techniques used for aging wine was influenced by your stay in Ireland, would you say that those techniques are more or less important than terroir ? Terroir is a three fold concept: The most obvious first two are soils (and their interaction with vines.) As you know the whole of Gironde is classified as AOC ground.

    NY Wine Tasting: Some Thoughts
When tasting Cabernet Franc (and Merlot, but I don't have enough context on that grape so I'm limiting this thought to Cab Franc), I found wines that smacked of vanilla and some sort of blackberry jam. Just look at Shinn or Wolffer, for example (although I have no idea whether or not Wolffer uses natural yeasts for their Cab Franc).

Chauvet is thought of as the father of natural wine making in France, and Etudes Scientifiques is a collection of his studies and writings.
