DR. VINO | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2012 Where are the thirst-quenching domestic reds? No, it’s not terroir. alcohol cabernet franc. Sommelier Raj Parr is teaming up with Arnot-Roberts to make a gamay. The French have a wine term that doesn’t translate. It’s vin de soif. wine that’s thirst-quenching is a fun drink that accompanies food or a moment but doesn’t dominate them. -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2010 Gamay vs. (Loire) Cabernet Franc As a student in various wine educational programs, yes, I have – and when faced with several wines fitting this description, it can often be choosing between Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Cabernet Franc (assuming it is traditional old world varieties). would not know if they were Gamay, Pinot Noir, or Cabernet Franc. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2010 Foillard Fleurie as in pie, as in franc de pied (French rootstock). This wine opened slowly, as Foillard's wines tend to do, the nose building to a crescendo of ripe Gamay fruit and flowers, wet stone underneath. I love Jean Foillard's wines. And I say this without even having tasted only half of the wines he makes. You know, 3.14 as in ?, Thank you. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2010 JD Headrick's Wines at Rouge Tomate According to Peter Liem , this is one of two terroir-specific wines Bedel makes, both from limestone parcels. 2007 Claux Delorme Valençay , about $16, is a delicious blend of Malbec, Gamay, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir. Headrick's portfolio is small, but well selected. The one who converted to biodynamic farming in 1982. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2009 Wine of the Week - Claux Delorme Valençay It is absolutely delicious and easy to drink, although there is some complexity here too, it is robust and flavorful, but it compliments instead of overwhelms your dinner, and it has a definite sense of place, or terroir. The 2006 vintage is 40% Gamay, 30% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Pinot Noir. For example.

DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2009 Tasty American wine under $12: why so little of it? Industry replies, part I am not sure I have an answer to your question but reading through the various comments I didn’t see anyone, except Paul Gregutt, mention the importance of where the grapes actually grow (we call it terroir ) and vineyard yields. The home of Gamay is Beaujolais, the home of Pinot is Burgundy. In France, by law, yields are controlled. -
DR. VINO | MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 2009 Screwcaps, scores, riesling, the Loire, Cali cab: John Gilman part two Everything else is in place for greatness- brilliant terroir, old vines and a great tradition, but these have to be synthesized into the unfortunate new realities of global warming, and in my experience, the Austrians have still not made that leap. German Riesling. And I really don’t understand why. just don’t get it. Austrian Riesling. -
ALICE FEIRING | MONDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2008 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas It would be far too easy to choose the 2006 Clos Roche Blanche Cot or the 2007 Gamay or a Breton and so I thought, nothing. There is a goregous cabernet franc-ness and underneath is a pure and simple plum. Take that and that those of you out there who deny terroir. Take that and that those of you out there who deny terroir. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2008 Jenny & François Fall Portfolio Tasting This, in my opinion, is the strongest part of the portfolio - the selections from southern France, country wines from the Rhône, Languedoc-Roussillan, and Provence. Serious, delicious, terroir focused, food friendly, interesting wines. Jenny & François' tasting is something that I have come to look forward to. ll take it. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2008 Friday Night Bubbles Cousin cultivates Gamay, Grolleau, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Chenin Blanc - there is something for everyone in this portfolio. They can be funky and a bit rustic, but they evolve beautifully in the glass and in the cellar, and offer a clean and pure expression of the terroir that is Layon. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JULY 2, 2007 The Beaujolais Challenge - Beaujolais couple of tidbits before we get into our real business, just to make sure that we're all on the same page: Gamay is the grape used to make red wine in Beaujolais. Yes, there is some white wine (Chardonnay) made in Beaujolais, but almost 99% of production is red wine, and it's all about Gamay. Don't worry, you haven't missed anything. | |
