I feel a little guilty here by tasting a Riesling outside the New York Finger Lakes, but I thought it may be time to see what the rest of the world has to offer with what has become my favorite white wine. For now, I am still a Finger Lakes fan, but still may sneak in an Alsace. Recommended.

I have often mentioned that my favorite white wine is Riesling, especially those from the New York Finger Lakes region. Seemed to be stuck on Finger Lakes white wines all summer. did pass on a few nice California reds though and stayed with the Finger Lakes and a Salmon Run Meritage 2008 ( $11 ), a blend of 54% Cabernet Franc, 39.5% New York Cheese and New York Wine, two great reasons to love New York and the Finger Lakes.

In the first post (since deleted) I mentioned the fact that I was unable to attend last years Finger Lakes Riesling Festival and that the '09 Fest was a torrential down pour. Can't remember last time we had this long of a heat wave in Central New York. What it does mean though, is I get to chill some Finger Lakes Riesling to enjoy in the air-conditioned family room and that all outdoor yard work is cancelled till another day. Close to 100F today, but feels like 120F.

This past autumn Shirley, Pam and I did a cheese tour of farms on the Finger Lakes. One of the first commercial goat dairy operations in New York State, beginning production in 1982 and located in Interlaken. That choice was not easy when you consider all the fantastic Finger Lakes Riesling tasted during the past year. How can I choose anything other than a Finger Lakes Riesling. All but three were Finger Lakes. Last year during regional wine week, I was able to taste (and consume a bit) some of my favorite wines from the nearby Finger Lakes. bit under the weather and a big change in my drinking habits, because of my recent heart surgery, I was still planning on tasting some wines from some of the other regions in New York.

Many were labels I have never seen other than the premier shops in New York City. The second was a recently purchased wine and spirits warehouse with a very large selection of wines, especially the largest selection of Finger Lakes wine I've seen in any shop. Pricing is the lowest I have seen locally. Opened two so far.

Last year I reviewed the Damiani Wine Cellars '07 Meritage and later picked that wine in a poll to win top honors at the New York Wine and Food Classics's annual competition. Aromas were still black cherry, some tobacco with some added dark plum and hints of new leather. The finish was very long, dry, with some pepper and anise.

I don't often go with Shirley and Pam to the Saturday morning Central New York Regional Farmer's Market, but I made an exception today. The winery and tasting room is located on the East side of Cayuga Lake between Waterloo and Ithaca. was also out of bed early enough to tag along, which is unusual.

I believe I made my love of Finger Lakes wines known to all that read this blog. Even so, I become disillusioned when traveling to New York City or surrounding states and find it difficult to find much more than the mass produced wines from a very few wineries available. Let's hope so.

Finished a few odds and ends around the house, enjoyed a great day on a Finger Lakes wine tour, visited family in Pennsylvania and attend my High School class reunion (20th, I believe, or 45th possibly). To continue Riesling month here in New York, I wanted to find something other than my favorites from the Finger Lakes region. Other than ordering on line, it is very difficult to find New York wines other than Finger Lakes and Adirondack wineries in the local shops. Enough history.

The blog started out in 2008 only as fun thing to do and to give my new wine affiliate web site it's first link. That did not come close to changing when I moved to within one hour of the New York Finger Lakes region. When I made my first Finger Lakes wine tour in 2008, I went expecting to taste only white wines.

While visiting Damiani Wine Cellars on Seneca Lake this past spring I tasted an excellent Syrah and I was sold. On a recent tour I found what I believe is the best (so far) Finger Lakes Syrah and it was just a short drive south of Damiani at the Atwater Estate Vineyards. From that day on I was a fan.

Can't seem to find a Finger Lakes Riesling I don't like. Thanks to my son, this past weekend I opened a dry Riesling from Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars located in Lodi, NY, on the east side of Seneca Lake and my first stop on the annual " Deck the Halls " event on Dec. have to say his timing was impeccable. g/L pH: 2.93

Much of this change or palate expansion, if there is such a term, is directly related to the wines from the Finger Lakes region on New York. Sometime near the end of the year, I would like to post all that I have learned and the wines that I have come to enjoy over the past two years.

It seems every winery in the Finger Lakes has a Meritage. I am just sitting back enjoying one of the many New York Finger Lakes wines I brought home from last weeks tour. Shirley and I started out a little late, but were able to taste some outstanding wines at five equally outstanding wineries along the southern east side of the Seneca Lake Trail and the west side of Keuka Lake.

I have no idea what occurred between the early 1980's and present in the case of New York Finger Lakes red wines. Last year, on the Cayuga Wine Trail, I finally found a few very nice reds and this past year discovered a new Finger Lakes winery that is producing some very excellent reds, the Damiani Wine Cellars.
