What an interesting visit to Herdade dos Grous in Alentejo, Portugal. Our hosts for the afternoon of tasting and lunch was the handsome, articulate chief winemaker Luis Duarte and his very sharp, well-traveled assistant, winemaker Mafalda Vasques who I will see this week back in New York.

Nuno Gonzalez is on a mission and it shows. As he leads a small group of journalists around his winery (the name refers to a black and white cow) he proudly shows off all the equipment (barrels, tanks) used to make what he promises will be among the best wines we will taste on the trip. A tall order.
