DECEMBER 27, 2013 2006 Belle Pente Vnyd Pinot Noir
Lightly hazy rose color with significant bricking even at 7. Very sophisticated aromas: rose, orange, musque, earth, oak. Bright berry notes: dusky cranberry, tart cherry, and a searing citrus element. Very lite finish, mostly on acid. Would pair best with fowl. 2006 Oregon USA

DECEMBER 26, 2013 White wine with…anchovy gelato?!?
Anchovy gelato and white wine? Wait, someone makes anchovy gelato?? The Times has a story about a handful of “all-natural” gelato shops in Rome that are bucking convention and trying to boost year-round sales. Their strategy?
DR. VINO Duckhorn sues over Duck Commander wines
| FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2013
If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and drinks like a duck, then it must be Duckhorn. Such appears to be the logic of Duckhorn Wine Company, which has sued over the Duck Commander wines. The controversial Phil Robertson, who recently got suspended (or not really? from Duck Dynasty, was not named a party to the suit. Trinchero Family Estates is a defendant in the suit, as is Wal-Mart where the wines are line priced at $9.99. Duckhorn Merlot sells for $54 a bottle. MORE >>
DR. VINO War on wine gadgets
| TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2013
It’s that time of the year: Merry War on Christmas, everyone! If Fox News were to channel its resources to a vinous purpose, they could do well to declare a war on wine gadgets. Fortunately, Marketplace picks up the slack in the Marketplace Morning Report today. In it, the reporter tracks down a shop manager who admits he’s not wild about wine aerators but he stocks them (and more!) nonetheless because people want to give them as gifts! MORE >>
A WINE STORY Visiting Ruinart in Champagne
| THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2013
“Welcome to Ruinart,” says Helga Barroso, an energetic young woman who speaks excellent English and turns out to be quite the enologist (as well as a brilliant historian). Ruinart is the last, yet certainly not least, visit in a week of visits to many of the Grand Maisons, and I am very excited to see the historic Champagne house as well as experience these very high end wines. SLAKED 2005/2006 DuMOL Pinot/Syrah
| WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 25, 2013
Tasted Christmas Day with roast duck. I''m always surprised and happy how varietal and terroir-driven these wines are. DuMOL has very distinct flavor profiles. The Pinot was elegant and sophisticated in a very French style (dry, complex, no RS) with fresh herb and floral notes rounding out the tart red berry tones. The Syrah (much darker and chunkier) is gamey, herby, bloody, and succinct. Both are worth the price. 2005 2006 Sonoma USA MORE >>
SLAKED 1999 Leroy Aloxe-Corton
| SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2013
Everyone complained this was too "subtle" except me. I thought it was terrific, but I''m the one who bought it, so. Deep but not dark rose hues. Light and earthy with dry herb notes. On the palate it''s still somewhat forward tannic-wise with a dark berry Pinot quality, in an agreeably rustic style, but what it lacks is oomph, and it lacks oomph in spades. In retrospect not at all worth the expense on winebid.com. Burgundy France MORE >>
