JANUARY 9, 2013 Scotland to women: wine makes you look old and fat
Health officials in Scotland have come up with a new weapon in their campaign against excessive drinking: an app that makes you look fat. And old. The app, called The Drinking Mirror, shows a projection of what the user may look like if they keep drinking at current (elevated) levels.

JANUARY 7, 2013 Lessons in a Bottle
There are many things I learn when drinking wine. Here are some things I've been thinking, things I want to remember entering 2013, along with the bottles that helped to inspire the lessons: There is no "perfect" moment, so don't waste life by waiting. Share and enjoy today.

JANUARY 6, 2013 Tasting Notes January 6, 2012
Chateau Ste Michelle Dry Riesling 2011, Columbia Valley. Very refreshing style of wine with intense notes of minerality and racy acidity. The finish is a pure beam of minerals, along with an orange-tangerine, tangy note that livens the palate.
DR. VINO The Gaul: Depardieu swaps wine for vodka?
| MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2013
Over the past month, a refugee tried to sell assets in his home country, bought a tiny house in a neighboring country, and took a passport from a third. It was none other than bon vivant Gerard Depardieu, who fled France, listed his $65 million Paris apartment , bought a house in Belgium a stone’s throw from the French border, and then received a Russian passport two days ago from Putin (wonder what they uncorked? Putin is a teetotaler.). MORE >>
WHY WINE BLOG Year In Review
| SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 2013
I've been doing these Years in Reviews for a few years now and came close to just forgetting or not really wanting to this year. When I first sat down to start the article, I said to myself, " ya know, there really isn't that much to review for 2012." Seemed logical that I not write a review of the year. Then, I did make some mental notes and put together a short list to help change my mind and record what was a 'life changing' 2012. MORE >>
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE Some Recent Wines, VLM Style
| THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2013
The Vulgar Little Monkey , or VLM as many like to call him, is back writing on the internet. I like his writing because it's completely honest, because he is clear about his particular point of view, and because he makes me laugh. I recently read through his blog posts since he picked it up again in October and it's satisfying stuff. Most of the posts list wines he's had, along with tasting notes. This sort of thing can be uninspiring at best, but the VLM makes it rewarding, in my opinion. MORE >>
A WINE STORY Spotlight on Korea: Up and Coming Wine Culture?
| SUNDAY, JANUARY 6, 2013
Imagine you are a high flying executive at one of the top electronics firms in Korea. A typical night on the town includes drinking - usually whiskey - and perhaps bragging about your level of intoxication the next day at work. Alarmed at this behavior many companies are taking action. Samsung for example has created a company-wide program designed to discourage hard alcohol consumption. Yet the key question is this: will consumers turn to lighter alcohol wine instead? MORE >>
DR. VINO Vieilles vignes from Middle Earth
| FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2013
Here’s a wine that I enjoyed over the holidaze: Rippon, “mature vines,” pinot noir, 2008 from Central Otago( find this wine ). It’s worth mentioning first and foremost because it is a tasty, succulent pinot, surprisingly, not an in-your-face fruity pinot. Instead, it’s got an alluring earthiness and minerality, a snap of acidity, all infused with gentle red fruits and a bit of savory spice. MORE >>
