MAY 22, 2012 Tyler wines and Chateau Your Name
The wines of Tyler winery get a thumbs up from me for the brilliance of the name alone–but also for what’s inside the bottle. I tasted a few of them recently at a trade tasting and was impressed with the lean, taut wines from a land known all too often for buxom chardonnay and pinot noir.

MAY 24, 2012 An Interesting Pairing Featuring Pelaverga
The other night I had dinner with a few friends at a favorite Japanese restaurant. This is a place where diners select almost none of the dishes they will eat - the chef chooses, and it is not a sushi place. It's more of a home cooking situation. Anyway, with the consent of the owner, we bring our own wines (paying corkage fees), and I've found over the years that Sherry, Champagne, Loire Chenin Blanc, and other savory white wines go best with the variety of dishes.

VIGNA UVA VINO Argiano Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2007
| TUESDAY, MAY 22, 2012
Ruby with rust colors around rim, showing minerality on the nose, waves of wood (cedar) with a nutty edge, while on the palate attractive candied spice, blue and red fruit, hints of violet. This Brunello is newly released and is a tiny bit tight but with an hour decanting should be fine. On the other hand if you'd like to lay this one down optimum drinking would be between 2014-2022, a bottle presently averages around $46 MORE >>
VIGNA UVA VINO Feudi del Pisciotto Versace Nero d'Avola IGT 2009
| SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2012
Made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes fermented in stainless steel, aged in barriques (50% new, 50% used) for 10 months with another 6 months in bottle. Expressively intense and fruit forward, with pretty aromas of blackberry pie, fruit compote and baked strawberry, while flavors are on the sweet side of dry with bing cherry and hints of blue fruits. Mild tannins are balance by fresh acidity and finish is long. Average $14/ bottle, good price for this gem MORE >>
