DECEMBER 28, 2011 Fattoria Dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2001
This Christmas day I broke out a bottle I've been saving since receiving it as a birthday present a few years ago. Released sometime in 2007, this Brunello Riserva is just setting out on its path to maturity but will have probably reached its peak at the end of this decade.

Well, of the last few months anyway. There have been a few truly memorable drinks and eatsin the past months that I never found a way to write about here. So I'll compile them in a best-of-the-unposted list from the last part of 2011.

WHY WINE BLOG Year in Review
| FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2011
I guess saying that 2011 was not as eventful as 2010 would be understating it a little. Although one must still put up with some of the aches and pains of old age there was nothing very serious to deal with other than a slight weight issue. Seems I have found the pounds that were lost or misplaced during the early part of the year. I did get back into the gym, but have been delinquent since Thanksgiving. I should be back on track after the holiday season. MORE >>
VIGNA UVA VINO Piccini Chianti 2009 DOCG
| THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2011
Here is a Chianti DOCG that is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and 5% Ciliegiolo. This everyday Chianti is an absolute value for the $8.95 pricetag. Nicely balanced, bright, fruity, supple and very easy to drink besides being a good food wine. Aromas of cherry, slight earthiness and cedar with hints of tobacco, on the palate delicate tannins and a fresh style make this an inexpensive winner MORE >>
A WINE STORY Visiting Regions of the Languedoc
| WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2011
In October we visited the Languedoc -- uur “base” was Agde, a town with 2,600 years worth of history where the River Hérault and the Canal du Midi meet the Mediterranean. From the 5th century BC, the Phocaeans developed this town into a trading station between Marseille and Spain, which expanded in the fullness of time. Our first event official event was a lunch hosted by the Syndicat Minevois, were we were welcomed by the elegant Christine Molines of the CIVL and Stephane Roux of the Minevois. MORE >>
A WINE STORY Are Scores a Necessary Gateway to the Market?
| MONDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2011
Today in his column Andrew Jefford tells the story of a woman from a small village who said some Canadian importers were interested in carrying her wine, yet wanted to know if they had been "scored" by any North American critics. Jefford asks a brilliant question: are scores actually necessary to get into today's market? MORE >>
A WINE STORY Rendez-vous au Champagne Bruno Paillard
| SATURDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2011
Bruno Paillard is an increasingly popular brand, and the first time I heard about it was during a week I spent as AXA's guest for winning a competition related to the Masters of Wine programme - it was the wine served in the very elegant 'drawing room' of Chateau Pichon-Longueville before dinner. The other guests at the table, at least the ones from the UK, seemed to know it. The second time was when Bruno Paillard himself made a big splash at a big Champagne event for the press last year.
