    Luca Roagna makes an array of wines from a solid dolcetto all the way up to the impossible to find Crichet Paje. The dolcetto, which retails for about $20, is very pretty. It’s the time of year when distributors and/or importers have annual (or semi-annual) portfolio tastings. Below are a few impressions and photos. Quite fun.

    Seghesio Langhe Nebbiolo 2008
    The Langhe area has a long history of vinegrowing and many of the wines made here use traditional, well-established grape varieties such as Arneis and Favorita for whites, and Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Freisa for reds. Sometimes you can open, pour and taste a wine and not expect anything other than just a drinkable table wine and get much more.

    From Piemonte, Bricco delle Lepri translates from Italian: Jug of Hares. like the name, but the wine? love it! Had it by the glass at Eataly tonight, bright strawberry, sour cherries, cocoa, oak, red berries, and herbs, tannins talkin' to me, all good. The color really impressed me too, really deep reddish purple and almost completely opaque

    Roagna , dolcetto d’alba, 2008: an amazing wine for $16 with lovely, intriguing bitterness on the aroma and tannins much more manageable than in my experience with dolcetto.     Abbona Dogliani "Papa Celso" Dolcetto di Dogliani 2003 DOC
    From Piemonte, dark and ominous with deep purple colors, heavily textured and looking unfiltered, but then revealing woodsy aromas with floral notes, especially violets. bit of blackberry touches the palate with ripe plum and a hint of balsamic, nicely structured tannins, good finish. well that's another post

    Thanksgiving phobia set in shortly after puberty when the parents were in their High Ball days. Wine was the provenance of Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. Turkey belonged to watered down bourbon. There were deaths, including the dog Becky, a gorgeous creature who insisted on kicking me out of my bed and claiming my pillow.

    Notro Sangiovese - Bonarda 2008 Argentina
    It originates in Savoie, where it is known as Corbeau or Douce Noir ("Sweet Black"), but is not the same as Piedmont's Dolcetto. Dolcetto ripens early and makes a light, fruity wine, while Charbono is very late to ripen and makes wines of great substance. Medium bodied with aromas of ripe red berries, and a forest floor lushness.

    De Forville , Dolcetto d’Alba, 2006. about $17; find this wine ) I’m not always a huge fan of dolcetto, aka “the little sweet one&# but, perhaps more aptly, “the little tannic one.&# Okay, these wines have little to do with each other besides being red and under $20. Oh, and they’re tasty and balanced.

    Pecchenino Dogliani Siri d'Jermu (Dolcetto) 2006 DOCG
    Thick and opaque with colors of ruby red, this Dolcetto has smoked bacon, cassis and red cherry licorice on the nose. Beginning with the 2005 vintage, Siri d'Jermu qualifies for the newly-created Dogliani DOCG which producers can use for their high-end Dolcettos. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012.

Barbera is one of the most food friendly red grapes since it can have wonderful red and black fruit aromas, invigorating acidity and lightness in tannin. Old school choice.

    Dolcetto d'Alba De Forville 2006 Piedmont Italy
    This Dolcetto d'Alba, has aromas of cherries & sour fruit, medium weight with dark ruby color. Italian wine • Sat at the bar at Market Table in the village on Carmine street and Bedford. It has a palate of chocolate, spices, herbs and medium tannins, with a bitter finish. sharper aged cheese might have worked better
