BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MAY 11, 2012 Sapidity Here is what the interweb says is the definition of the word sapid: -- Perceptible to the sense of taste; having flavor. Here is another, this time a " medical definition :" --affecting the organs of taste : possessing flavor and especially a strong agreeable flavor. Doesn't it seem like an acidic wine? And no! Peter agreed. Anyway. At -
VIGNA UVA VINO | MONDAY, MAY 7, 2012 Viña Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 The nose is definitely intense, with ripe red and blue fruits like cherry, cassis, blueberry, raspberry and plum interwoven with palate notes of licorice, violets and spice, while showing good firm structure. There is much going on here for under $10. This wine has a deep and dark ruby red color. -
Whoa! Well made Bandol rosé definitely improves with age. Been so busy lately with work that I just haven't had time to write here. But I want to share some recent "Whoa," wine and food that really knocked me out. 1999 Clos Rougeard Saumur Bréze , Louis/Dressner Imports, price unknown. Whoa, this is just amazing wine. More, please. Briny. Lovely. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 2012 Bodegas Riojanas Puerta Vieja Crianza 2007 Rioja Definitely a food wine that works really well with red meat or sauces. From La Rioja region of Spain, Bodegas Riojanas produces this Crianza, a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano aged for 18 months in American oak, followed by six months bottle aging before release. What a complex wine for the price?! Don't miss this one -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2012 Inocente.with Bottle Age It turns out that with good storage, the results are well worth the effort and I will definitely try to recreate this experience by socking away a few bottles of my own. The other night, at the end of a lovely blind wine dinner (more on that another time) I decided to open one last bottle for my guests, a bottle of Valdespino Inocente.

DR. VINO | MONDAY, APRIL 9, 2012 Massachusetts wine shops worth seeking out Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the North End but they also ship. However, the state is one of the hardest for retailers to ship wine into. And as of last year, there’s no sales tax on wine (and beer and spirits) in the state, so that helps stretch the consumer’s wine dollar seven percent farther than other states. -
DR. VINO | FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 2012 Domaine de Ferrand, La Ferrande, 2009 The wine has some definite ripeness to it–indeed, a tad much for me–but the class participants welcomed the layered flavors of fruit, a hint of bitter notes such as coffee and warming alcohol at 14%. To poll at 90 percent is unheard of in a democracy. wine picks -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, MARCH 26, 2012 Paso A Paso Verdejo 2010 Verdejo will definitely be one of them. Over the past two years I became very fond of a white wine for the Rias Baixas region of Spain made from the Albarino grape. On one of my reviews a comment suggested that I also try another Spanish white wine, Verdejo. Arguably Spain's finestwhite grape variety. Aromas were at first all apple. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 2012 Forcing Myself to Drink New Wines This past month I bought two wines that are new to me and both, I must say, were excellent wines, things I would definitely buy again. There is ripe fruit - spiced pear and apple, there is a definite mineral sensation, and the finish is long and pleasingly bitter. mean really - Burgundy, the Loire, Sherry, Champagne.what's not to love? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2012 Marius Gentaz Côte-Rôtie - a Dinner for the Ages. appreciated the wine but definitely sensed the taint. The other night I did something that I have never done before, and most likely will never do again. drank a Marius Gentaz Côte-Rôtie. Gentaz never made large quantities of wine, and he stopped making wine after the 1993 vintage - he retired and his nephew René Rostaing took over the vines. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 2012 Cupcake Vineyards Central Coast Merlot 2009 Sourced from vineyards in the Central Coast region, Cupcake Vineyards brings this California Merlot to the table for a mere $10 price tag but it's definitely worth way more. Supple tannins but smooth and attractive with a matching finish. Really like this as an every day Merlot. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2012 Thinking About how to Rate Wine don't want to spend time here summarizing the various arguments, and I don't have a definitive opinion on the best rating system for wine. Much has been written and many debates take place about how to rate wine. It seems now that the 100 point scale is seen as "old guard," that it has not been effective at communicating a wine's quality. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, JANUARY 12, 2012 Brown Sherries Improve After Opening ! The nose is regal in its complexity and subtlety, with coffee grounds and nuts, definite flor character, and it is moving in its penetrating focus and its elegance and finesse. was very excited to drink and share this wine. This is special wine - very little is bottled every year and it is not imported to the US. Nothing. It matters to me. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2012 How to Open and Enjoy an Old Bottle of Wine It's not just an aesthetic issue—the sediment can be bitter, and its presence definitely changes the flavors of the wine. wine should definitely retain vibrancy and energy—it shouldn't be dead or overly oxidized. I was given an amazing birthday gift in November, an old bottle of wine by Produttori del Barbaresco, the 1959 Riserva. -
WHY WINE BLOG | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2011 Year in Review Best Red - For me, this was definitely a year for the white wines, passing up some of my favorite reds all year and those I did taste were mostly mediocre at best. I guess saying that 2011 was not as eventful as 2010 would be understating it a little. Seems I have found the pounds that were lost or misplaced during the early part of the year. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2011 Memorable Pairings of 2011 loved this wine too, although it is definitely different from the other Lahaye wines I've had. Well, of the last few months anyway. There have been a few truly memorable drinks and eatsin the past months that I never found a way to write about here. So I'll compile them in a best-of-the-unposted list from the last part of 2011. -
A WINE STORY | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2011 Visiting Producers of the Hermanus Wine Route in South Africa The wines are made as natural as possible to have a definite sense of place, with natural yeast and gravity fed movement -- all excellent quality. So my last visit in South Africa was with five producers located in the Hermanus Wine Route, also known as the Hemel en Aarde Valley, close to the sea. Hamilton Russell is just one of the two S. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2011 In Defense of Red Wine This is definitely a wine that showcases ripe dark fruit, but that's only a part of the package. I've been having a hard time with red wine lately. Okay, I never have a problem with mature Burgundy, or mature red wine in general. White wine is so much more versatile with food, so much easier to drink on its own. Labet's is excellent too. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2011 A Noël Verset Wine Dinner love how the best bottles show an incredible intensity and focus while retaining every aspect of definition and clarity - these are big wines, and they are graceful and articulate too. Not too long ago I was fortunate enough to attend a dinner featuring the wines of Noël Verset. The company was great, and so were the food and the wines. -
A WINE STORY | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2011 Thanksgiving Day Wines 2011 the soils are volcanic and the wine shows a definitive sense of terroir. Curious about what wine to bring for Thanksgiving dinner? The most important consideration is to find a good "food wine" -- especially wines that will pair well with thanksgiving foods like turkey and sweet potatoes that also have that elusive quality of "balance.". -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2011 The Changing Sherry Market - Fine Sherry is more than Equipo Navazos Not really so long ago in Burgundy, négociants dominated the wine market. Growers sold even their finest wines to the négoce who bottled them and that's what was largely available for retail purchase. And I doubt that anyone would say that this is a bad thing. In a way, the opposite is true regarding Sherry. Not now. Jesus Barquin of Equipo Navazos. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2011 The Palmas of González Byass - A Guest Post by Peter Liem This, of course, ignores the fact that fino is by definition an aged wine, being anywhere from three to ten years old when it is bottled. For me, it's definitely a fino-amontillado now. Peter Liem is an expert on Champagne and Sherry, and probably several other wine regions too, although he would never say that himself. -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2011 Day 1: Fine & Rare Wine Program Of course, everyone loved the Roumieu -- the 2008 Merryvale raised eyebrows as some asked "is this new vintage 'fine wine' and what is a good definition of fine wine.'". so now we are having beer (!) Of the 20 students, five of us (all women) are MW students, with the rest being sommeliers. -
DR. VINO | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2011 Refreshing Brunello: Il Paradiso These are distinctive Brunellos–definitely not ones to walk out on. I attended a private dinner recently where a Brunello was the main wine. It was big and extracted and I found it fatiguing. can’t even remember the producer’s name. few weeks later, I had another side of Brunello, aptly named Il Paradiso. -
DR. VINO | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2011 Prohibition’s lingering bad taste [Ken Burns] But either way, the documentary is definitely worth watching tonight. If you’ve turned on PBS during the past couple of nights, you’ve probably encountered slow zooms and pans of black and white photographs. And the people in those photos may have been women protesting saloons or men using hatchets to destroy barrels of whiskey. -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2011 2010 Finger Lake Rieslings Rich and assertive with a residual sugar of 8 grams per litre that is just under the legal definition of "dry." Between the lakes, varying meso and micro climates create Rieslings with diversity and range. A "Tweet up" of these wines took place on September 22, 2011 and here are some tasting notes. Glenora 'Dry' Riesling 2010. Full flavored. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2011 My Dinner with Comtes Lafon It was the definition of refinement and grace, so focused, it had such amazing complexity and depth, such resonance, such clear articulation of its aromas and flavors, such a delicate but firm texture. I drank a white wine by Domaine des Comtes Lafon the other night the first time I have ever done so. Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. Yup, $170. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2011 Learning Enough to Know That I Don't Know Anything. There is also a definite sense of place - the wine is made from plots formerly classified as Pommard and Volnay villages, and the wine reminds me of those places. "I've learned enough to know how much there is that I don't know." This is an idea that I firmly believe in. Regarding wine, I hit this point some time ago. Starkly different. -
A WINE STORY | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 Weingut Bassermann-Jordan As scientists, they worked on improving wine-growing methods and consider that they wrote the definitive book on the history of viticulture. During the trip we will be having dinner at this winery, an event called "‘Bistro Freundstück’. Very sure I will have the scoop on the winery after my visit! Kirchgasse 10 ~ 67146 Deidesheim. -
WHY WINE BLOG | FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2011 A Day In the Finger Lakes 6 - Keuka Lake Our first time at the Blue Heron and will definitely return when back in the region. Shirley, I and our good friend Mark did a little day trip south on rte 54A and then around the South end of Keuka Lake to head North on rte 54. RS) over some real tasty dry wines. -
WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2011 Keuka Springs Gewurztraminer 2010 locally made Trillium cheese was a definite no-no. Just dawned on me that I have to make room in the wine fridge for the wines I'll be bringing home from the Finger Lakes Riesling Fest on Sunday. just finished a nice Finger Lakes Gewurztraminer and was looking forward to a comparison with a few more I have on hand. Maybe next time. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, JULY 31, 2011 Umami and Wine definitely appreciate the science behind taste. Wine can have a savory taste, I've experienced it countless times. It is not specific to a grape variety, I find, more to certain places and techniques of wine making. For example, Jura wines, some red and almost every white have a certain umami taste to me. And most Sherries aged under flor. -
WHY WINE BLOG | FRIDAY, JULY 15, 2011 Concannon Central Coast Merlot 2008 Definitely worth twice or three times the price. It's been a lot of fun traveling the world through wine this past month. This is something I wanted to do for the year and I will continue as long as I can find the wines. Tonight I am getting a head start with a very nice Merlot from one of my favorite California wineries, Concannon Vineyards. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2011 Fino Sherry and Bottle Age - an Investigation and a Dinner Nº 23 was more intense, a bit more muscular, and definitely felt more dense on the palate than Nº 9. If you became interested in Sherry sometime before the past few years, you might have learned some things that perhaps are not entirely true. This actually might be true of many Fino and Manzanillas. I, however, have not. That, is pretty cool. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 2011 Good Earth Wine Aarohi Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Definitely more body than Sauv/Blancs I tasted. On our last visit to NYC, I was able to visit my new favorite NYC wine store, 67Wines at 179 Columbus Ave and 68th. Shirley found this shop a few months ago on her last visit to NYC with Pam. She had six wines shipped home. Our store assistant, Sadie, had recommended the wine from India. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, MAY 30, 2011 A Day in the Finger Lakes 5 - Cayuga Lake I've been wanting to get back on the Cayuga Wine Trail for over a year now and definitely wanted to visit some wineries again and some that I have not yet been to. Almost seemed that I may never get back on a Finger Lakes Wine Trail after the past year. Had to cancel two trips last summer, then again in April of this year, cancelled another. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SATURDAY, MAY 28, 2011 Greek Assyrtico Wine The first one was definitely not what I expect in any wine, as was the second. Definitely wines meant for the kitchen sink drain. For a few days, I did not think I would be writing any post on Greek white wines from the isle of Santorini. first opened the one I bought and followed with one that was sent. Surprise, Surprise. 16 - $18. -
DR. VINO | THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011 Study: wine labels understate alcohol It’s a rich study and definitely one worth geeking out on while sipping a wine that has a 57% chance of misstating the alcohol level. Sometimes you need a study to affirm what you suspect. Such is the case with a recent paper that shows wine labels to understate actual alcohol by at least 0.3 percentage points, on average. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, MAY 24, 2011 Recent Wines - A Laundry List have yet to love a Priorat, but this one was definitely interesting and very tasty. During the past two months I had the chance to drink some very special wines, mostly thanks to the generosity of friends, but since I took a bit of a break from writing, I haven't shared a lot. If you haven't tried Stony Hill, you should. -
DR. VINO | SATURDAY, MAY 21, 2011 Chinese wine cork declares “you fat” He says he doesn’t drink Chinese wine (“for obvious reasons ) but this bottle was a birthday present (“tasted terrible and was definitely not made of 100% juice ). Rob, a site reader living in China, sent in these photos. Still, are the Chinese trying to send anglophone customers messages via corks a la fortune cookies? -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2011 Muscadet 2010 has the snap, the crackle, and the pop I’ll definitely be tucking away a few magnums since older Muscadet remains one of the affordable pleasures for wine enthusiasts. Outside of hipster wine circles, Muscadet is not so well known among younger wine drinkers. But that turned off the supermarket buyers, who walked and found another wine they could sell for that price point. -
WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2011 Veramonte Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2009 With the stuffed peppers, I felt the finish was a little weak, but sipping afterward, I found the finish to be dry and long and the taste was "ooh-la-la" At a $12 price, I am definitely adding this one to my list of must haves. Finally, something to write home about. Until tonight. One of them bowl of cereal and maybe a banana type nights. -
A WINE STORY | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2011 Discovering Beajuolais: Gamay & Chardonnay (A Tweet Up) While Chardonnay is definitely a minority in the region, this Beaujolais Blanc is unoaked, ripe, and has a delightfully round texture.he Think of Beaujolais and "Blanc" isn't typically the first color you think of. After all, Beaujolais, south of Burgundy, is home to the red wine grape Gamay, with the area known for its signature soils. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, APRIL 17, 2011 Remembering to Care About Proper Storage Not tasted, necessarily, and definitely not aromatically young. The other night I was reminded of the the importance of proper storage as a factor in the life of a wine. Maybe that sounds trivial, but not to me. Truly perfect storage is next to impossible, outside of the cellar that birthed the wine. Honestly, I don't care either way. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 2011 Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel # 6 - 2009 "Basic" German Riesling So flawed definition and all, I convened the panel and we tasted 2009 "basic" German Riesling. I'm a German wine neophyte, but over the past year I've started poking around a bit, drinking Riesling here and there. like the wines very much in general, but I'm still a bit intimidated. some do not. But what are the basic German Rieslings? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, APRIL 10, 2011 A Confederacy of Geekery don't aspire to drink geeky wine, and I'm not saying that geeky wine is by definition good wine - that would be absurd. Two friends came over for dinner the other night. I'm just saying that on this night, with a couple of serious wine lovers, it happened that we drank a lineup of incredibly geeky wine. And I loved it. Me neither. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2011 Further Adventures in Blind Tasting The point for me is not to try to guess the wine, although that is fun and definitely a part of the learning experience. But it can be great fun too if you're with the right people, and I definitely was. A lot of people don't like blind tasting, but I enjoy it a lot. But still, it's good to check in on these things from time to time. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 2011 Champagne News At about $85 we're into vintage Champagne expensive territory, but here you're definitely getting your money's worth, in my opinion. This time of year there are a load of trade tastings, and even if like me, you only go to a few of them, you hear things. Isabelle and Franck Pascal, and their name tags. They are very reasonably priced too. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2011 An Afternoon of Grand Cru Chablis 2009 Les Clos and Bougros, and 2008 Blanchot and Les Preuses were all very promising wines, the 2009's perhaps more appealing to me than any other 2009's that I tasted on this day, as they were able to maintain a striking purity and definition, in addition to smelling and tasting great. 2007 and 2008, these are vintages for connoisseurs. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 2011 Wine & Wood His website is called Bare Woodworks and definitely is worth a browse. I recently discovered the website of an artist from Washington state by the name of Bob Buhl who takes recycled wine barrels and transforms them into wonderful furniture pieces. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2011 Comparing the 2008 and 2009 Vintages in Burgundy via Domaine Fourrier This one will definitely have a place in my cellar. Following my interview with Jean-Marie Fourrier, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend a Domaine Fourrier tasting that featured several wines from the 2008 and 2009 vintages. Fourrier's importer Neal Rosenthal organized the event. So different from the 2009. Yes, 100 year old. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2011 A Conversation with Jean-Marie Fourrier - Part 2 The wine school definition of filtration that I learned is this - 'filtration is the acceleration of the process of sedimentation.' When I left off, Jean-Marie Fourrier was about to describe what he changed about the Domaine Fourrier wines, since the days when his father made the wine. He said that it began with the 1997 vintage. JMF: Yes. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2011 Farro Salad The wine definitely has an inner core of energy and power, but the texture is very fine. Last summer I had lunch at Al Di La , the Venetian trattoria in my neighborhood and one of things we ate was a delicious farro salad. Farro is the Italian name for wheat berries - whole grain wheat. Is farro salad only for warm weather? -
WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2011 Yasa Old Vines Macabeo 2009 Definitely a grape I would like to find out more about. Still on the hunt for new varieties of white wines has led me to the Yasa Old Vines Macabeo ( $8 ). This another of the fantastic white wines from the northern regions of Spain. It is the prominent white grape from the Calatayud region of Spain. Looking for something new and different? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2011 Hung up on Classification, Champagne Style Unless I am misunderstanding the definition of grower Champagne, Roederer's wines are grower wines, except for the NV Brut. I think that the lines that distinguish grower Champagne from big house Champagne are too rigidly drawn. We're willing to give a little, in other words, when categorizing producers and their wines. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 2011 M. Wells: a Diner. but also a Culinary Gem. in Long Island City Wells, 21-17 49th Avenue, LIC, (718) 425-6917 is definitely worth a visit Opened in July of 2010 by husband-and-wife team Hugue Dufour from Montreal’s Au Pied de Cochon, and Sarah Obraitis, M. Wells is a rebirth of an old Long Island City diner. The service is spot on, friendly and warm, and prices are very fair. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2010 Mid-term Cellaring Results The palate is a disaster - way too evolved, no definition, not flawed, but unpleasant. Not too long ago I retrieved some wine from off-site storage, things that I meant to drink at about this point in their lives (and in mine), and also a few things to check in on. The results have not been terribly impressive so far. Live and learn. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2010 Osso Bucco Don't even be a little bit scared, because you should definitely make this dish. I've made Osso Bucco before, but with beef shanks, never with veal. The other day prowling the meat case at the coop , I saw three shiny and beautiful veal shanks sitting there, and so I pounced. You can use tomato, wine, stock, any kinds of vegetables, whatever. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2010 Organic Wines of Chile Definitely the best Chilean wine I have had to date. In March of this year I reviewed a few Carmenere wines from Chile and although they were not that bad, they still were not wines I personally would order when dining out or even buy as an everyday table wine. Disclaimer: I received this wine as a sample from the PR folks at Banfi Vintners. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2010 Peter Liem on "The Variability of Experience." We like things to be definitively laid out in black and white-we want to be able to know that a wine tastes a certain way, and have some guarantee that it fulfills the promise of its label when we open it. Here is a snippet from the post: Generally speaking, we don't deal well with the issue of variability in wine. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2010 Drinking Dönnhoff Young: Riesling and the Art of Minimal Sacrifice And I definitely would have started with something a lot less expensive. A few weeks ago a sample box containing two bottles of wine showed up at my house. never have high hopes when opening these things, but this one contained quite a treat - a bottle of 2008 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese , about $50, Terry Theise Selections. -

"Viva, Argentina!" Laura joins the Team. 2008 Alamos Seleccion Malbec. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2010 What's Wrong with my Tongue? The taste was definitely beefy but in a gentle way, and the texture was a miracle of melt-in-your-mouth silkiness. I ate a small plate of beef tongue recently at Tsukushi, a small Japanese restaurant in midtown. It was part of long lineup of dishes that the chef served to us, and it was one of the best things I've eaten in recent memory. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 2010 2004 Burgundy Red Wine - How Bad is it? Some of the wines greatly improved over the course of a few days, shedding bulk, gaining definition. It is commonly said that 2004 is the worst recent vintage for red wine in Burgundy. The weather was not good - lots of rain and a lot of rot. But that in itself is probably not the biggest problem with the 2004's. bought some 2004 wines. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2010 Cepas De Familia Gimenez Riili Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Mendoza Argentina Aromas of figs, balsamic, smoke, oak, vanilla and ripe blackberries, combined with rich strong flavors of prunes, cherries, and powdered chocolate, augmented by a dash of pepper and definite leather nuances converging on the finish. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, AUGUST 16, 2010 You be the Sommelier This is a recipe that you definitely can do yourself - do not be intimidated by what you're about to see. Beginning at 12 o'clock and moving clockwise, that's a Brandywine, a Purple Cherokee, and a Green Cherokee. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 2010 Birth Year Wines 2nd daughter will definitely get something interesting from one or more of these producers. I've been thinking a little bit about birth year wines lately. 1971 was a good vintage in Burgundy and also in Piedmonte, so it shouldn't be too hard to find something interesting and delicious. They are 23 months apart in age, born in 2007 and 2008. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, JULY 15, 2010 What's in an Old Bottle? Of course it isn't always possible, and with the Vallana Spanna wines, there are questions and few definitive answers. As I was saying in the last post, there was discussion at the table about the contents of the old Vallana Spanna wines we drank. Were these wines made purely of Nebbiolo? Why not simply drink them and enjoy them? -

ALICE FEIRING | TUESDAY, JULY 6, 2010 A Back Label To Be Proud Of Who needs a definition for the category of wines so far known as Natural Wine when you have this? I broke down. It's been a hell of a day writing a story I DO NOT WANT TO WRITE. In fact I tried to convince my editor, "Please, kill the story!" No such luck. La Boheme, a declassified muscadet from Marc Pesnot. Perfect for this weather. Maybe -
DR. VINO | TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 2010 Tasting the hand and the land at Hirsch Vineyards The 2007 Hirsch, although nobody’s going to confuse it with Chablis, was definitely leaner, with higher acidity and lower alcohol: voluptuousness was replaced by more restraint. Ten years ago, vineyard owner David Hirsch of Sonoma brought some of his wines to New York. Consider it a datapoint in the discussion about alcohol levels. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 2010 Santa Alicia Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2008 Maipo Valley Chile Long thick finish with definite signs of Coca-Cola and maple syrup. Delicious aromas of ripe plums, cassis and spices and priced like an everyday wine (bottle retails for about $10) to have with a meal. Another great find at The Wine Room of Forest Hills. -
WHY WINE BLOG | THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2010 Silver Birch Sauvignon Blanc 2009 3L Definitely a good party wine. Last March I posted a press release on a new collection of artisan wines in an innovative attractive new package. An international wine collection with six brands and ten items packaged in a new exciting premium 3L wine cask from the Octavin Home Wine Bar ™. The Chardonnay was not impressive. -
SLAKED | THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2010 Blending with Audrey Very definite impression of salt, minerality and dark red fruits. There is very little that is more fun than blending wine. I'd have to say it's one of the best parts of the job. We're also tasting individual barrels to get an idea of how the young wines taste. 2) Nice sweet tannin and starting to show some black fruits. Finishes nicely. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2010 Montgomery's Cheddar from Neal's Yard Eating them together provided, for me anyway, a clear definition of Cheddar. About a month ago I ate Wensleydale cheese from Neal's Yard and loved it, and most callously called it a Cheddar, which it in fact is not. Bronwen Percival , the cheese buyer at Neal's Yard, discussed this at the end of the post in her comments. We drank N.V. -
ALICE FEIRING | SATURDAY, MAY 29, 2010 The NPA Tasting Room Opens We talked about what is a natural wine, the struggle, the definition, but I'm sitting on that one for another post. Kevin Kelley, winemaker for Lioco and his own, Salinia, and masterminded NPA (which kicked off the wine within 100-miles fresh direct deliviery in a can craze.) Love the wines. Love the guy. The '09 Sauvignon blanc is brill. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MAY 20, 2010 A Laundry List of Recent Wines The alcohol is under 11%, the wine is dry and full of minerals and it is definitely interesting. I try not to do laundry list posts that sound like "here's what I drank recently." But I've had some interesting wines lately, some of them great, others a bit lackluster. So this will, in fact, be a laundry list post. Sigh of relief. don't know.I -
A WINE STORY | TUESDAY, MAY 11, 2010 Restaurant Trends for 2010: Wine & Spirits 2nd Annual Top of the List All panelists confirmed restaurant wine sales were up -- at least by definition of the very low past few years, and that consumers were also open to trying new wines from around the world. The panel consists of three very influential people in the NYC restaurant world. -
Chablis Night Very tight aromatically, but there are hints of chalky rock and citrus fruit, and there is a definite oxidative character to the fruit. We had a bunch of people over for dinner this weekend for Chablis night. Okay, that's not exactly what we did. But close. wanted to drink a few of the William Fèvre wines alongside some other good Chablis. -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 2010 Lower euro = lower wine bill? Guess again While European travel will definitely be cheaper today than it was six months ago, wine importing doesn’t always work like that. The euro hit $1.28 this morning, down from $1.51 in December. Does the lower euro mean that European wines are likely to get cheaper on store shelves soon? the market would love that! -
ALICE FEIRING | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 2010 What is Natural Wine? Ten and twenty years ago one didn't have to worry about a definition of natural wine. I've been emailing with Dave McIntyre about his WAPO piece. hate being written about so I can't blame him if he was peeved, but you know what? He was a complete mensch. He did sign off the last email by saying. actually don't care. The good and the great -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 2010 Two Things that Weren't Supposed to be Good, but Were. bit backwards upon opening, but with a bit of air it's quite lovely with definite high notes of seashells and iodine on the nose. There really is no point in me trying to make ramen - it's just not going to happen. It would be like trying to make sushi. Ramen too. So instead, I used ramen as the inspiration for noodle soup. Egg - necessary. -
A WINE STORY | FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 2010 Wines of Origins: The Real Deal Guests at the 21 Club. Did you know that the U.S. is the second-largest export market for Champagne, behind the United Kingdom? Over 20 million bottles were shipped to the U.S. in 2004 alone. Or that Port is a fortified wine that comes form the world’s oldest wine region? Today, such a ruse is nearly impossible given strict AOC regulation. -
A WINE STORY | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14, 2010 Chateau de Sancerre Comes to New York Old World wines are said to be more dry and mineral, and this is definitely the case here, as evidenced by both Chateau de Sancerre’s white and red. Marc Sorrel-Dejerine of Chaeau De Sancerre. Now, it’s possible you are more familiar with the grape variety Sauvignon Blanc than the name Sancerre. -
DR. VINO | MONDAY, APRIL 5, 2010 Bordeaux 2009 en primeur — the dispatches! BigSiTheWineGuy Definite mixed bag vintage. BigSiTheWineGuy Definite mixed bag vintage. Over the past month, critics and wine trade buyers have been on the ground in Bordeaux, tasting the 2009 vintage before they go on pre-sale (as “futures ) in the coming months. So how did things pan out in the glass? Overall. Lafite 100. -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 2010 Is Hello Kitty wine the Joe Camel of wine? [poll] The wine’s marketer told LA Weekly : “My take on it is this: with over 60,000 Hello Kitty sku’s in the marketplace and at 35 years old now, she is definitely ready for more adult skewed products. don’t think that the $15,000 dollar Hello Kitty handbags are aimed at children either. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 2010 Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere 2008 The Marques de Concha Casa, at $20, was definitely the best of the three, although the Casillero del Diablo was a great buy. This is the third of the Carmenere wines I tasted this month. As I stated in my previous two articles, Carmenere is one of the wines I've pushed aside in the past, but have placed on a list to re-examine in 2010. -
DR. VINO | TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 2010 Baboons, biting hands, Bordeaux disarray, sommeliers – sipped and spit Check for the definition of winemaking… (via candidwines ). SIPPED: headline writing. “Baboons give Chardonnay a thumbs up, was a recent headline on timeslive.co.za. How many baboon thumbs up could catch on as a new, powerful wine evaluation method. See our previous baboon coverage.). SIPPED: market disarray. His reaction? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 7, 2010 Tidal Pool have less experience with the 2007 Gilbert Picq Chablis 1er Cru Vosgros , $29, Polaner Imports, than I do with the Vieille Vignes, but in 2007 this wine is a definite step up. A few years ago I spent a lot of money on two bottles of Chablis , money that I wish I could have back right now. paid up for the wrong vintage. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 2010 Dinner with the Wines of Savigny-lès-Beaune The Pavelot Dominode showed a definite layer of gravelly stone underneath the pure and spicy red fruits. I had some of the fellas over the other night to have dinner and drink red wine from Savigny-lès-Beaune. Why Savigny-lès-Beaune? That's real money, but it's pretty cheap as far as Burgundy goes. They lie on hills with southern exposure. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2010 Low Yields and Surprising Wines This is Aligoté - there was plenty of acidity and the finish was definitely of a chalky mineral character. Changes in climate bring high yields in some years, low yields in others. The wines are higher priced in that vintage, or the producer makes less money, neither of which are desirable outcomes. The wine was fantastic, really striking. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2010 How Long Should a Wine Age? began by reading and talking to friends, and this definitely served me well. I've always been attracted to things that are defined by a concrete set of rules. What attracts me most is when, given a thorough understanding of the rules, it is possible to be creative in solving problems within that system. Wine fits in here too. And that's fine. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2010 New West Village Wine Bar: Pudding Stones I'll definitely be back Every morning I’ve been passing by a storefront in New York’s West Village that for months had its windows papered to block a view to the inside. But the awning had an intriguing name …Pudding Stones Wine Bar which was printed in small subtle letters. So I look back towards the entrance and I see what she’s gawking at. -
WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2010 Why Wine: Cline Cellars: Giving Back with Cashmere 2008 Definitly not Beaujolais, but fruit forward with much higher alcohol. One of the great things about social networking is that you often get in contact with friends and classmates from a time when all was great, life was fun and we were all going to live forever. am fortunate to know a few survivors, including one male, now retired, co-worker. -
DR. VINO | FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2010 Riesling buzz, grower Champagne, 2009, nude breakfast – Terry Theise My own sense is that five to 10 years ago, Riesling was definitely in on the ascent. Is Riesling a hard sell? Has the bubble burst on his Champagnes made by those who grow the grapes? Just how good is 2009? On Tuesday, I pulled wine importer Terry Theise aside at the trade tasting of his New York distributor, Michael Skurnik Wines. Great. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2010 Champagne Terroir - Baby Steps What stood out at that point was soil - a definite earthy, sandy tone that carried throughout the bright and savoury finish. But as the wine changed, there was this definite foundation that was always present, this persistently chalky sensation on the finish. It's not easy to understand terroir in Champagne. don't understand it. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2009 Just Open It would love to give you detailed tasting notes, but we attacked the Prévost and Selosse before drinking this, and that's definitely the wrong order for these wines. Many of the wine people I know share seem to share this generous spirit regarding even the finest and rarest of wines. party of 15 people? Pop open the Selosse. Perhaps fewer. | |
