    Now owned by Anthony Russell (son of the founder) and producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wines produced here are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, all very balanced, elegant, and Burgundian as you can imagine. He offers three handcrafted wines – sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, and a syrah based blend called ‘Serenity.’

    White wine varietals that are receptive to oak’s influence include: Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and of course Chardonnay. Just grab a bottle of well-oaked Chardonnay and an “unoaked” Chardonnay (typically labeled as “unoaked” or “naked” Chardonnay) and do a side-by-side taste test.

    December Wines - a Laundry List
    They are made from old vines, mostly Semillon and the balance Sauvignon Blanc. 2000) Tarlant Champagne La Vigne d'Antan Extra Brut Non-Grefée Chardonnay , $65, was imported by Jon-David Headrick Selections, not sure who imports it now. December tends to be a good month for wine drinking. This one, however, was thrilling. Very lovely.

    Tasting Sauvignon Blanc for Summer

Second, this wine is a blend including 14% of Semillon (a richer grape) and 2% Viognier. “I want a wine that tastes like summer,” the chic woman tells the clerk at an upscale wine store. Something that pairs well with grilled skewers of fresh shrimp and swordfish. What do you recommend?” briny Muscadet? Salud!

    My Beach Party Animal Sauvignon
    A stainless steel fermentation of sauvignon blanc, semillon, gewürztraminer, riesling, and chardonnay" (quote taken from the 2008 tasting note), this has a golden hay color, very light in the mouth with a touch of salinity and very tight citric acidity, then blossoming honeyed notes followed by lemon rind.

    We’ve now got Chardonnays with five or six years under screwcap and none of these problems appear yet we know that we are using yeasts that are far more prone to producing hydrogen sulfide or what have you. So we grew up making and drinking Semillon and Riesling. Unfortunately, the bottle was not showing well that day.

    NorCal day 2: Sonoma
    started with a white blend of 50% Semillon & 50% chardonnay that I really enjoyed. Oily" is used to describe the texture or body of a wine and is commonly associated with Semillon - which may be why I used that descriptor (another benefit to blind tasting). There were only 2 wines, a Chardonnay and a bordeaux blend.

    Polaner tasting standouts
    began in a French table area and tried some Sancerres (made from Sauvignon Blanc), some white Burgundys (made from Chardonnay) and some white blends. He wants his wines to show a nice purity of fruit (Chardonnay) and as such uses large 600 liter (mostly neutral) barrels. Made from Chardonnay, this wine had an exploding bouquet.

    Jenny & Francois Portfolio Tasting
    2007 Haut la Vigne Côtes de Duras - 50-50 chardonnay and semillon. In case you're not familiar with Jenny & Francois , they import natural wines from all over France, from heavy hitters like Burgundy to unsung heroes like the Côtes de Duras (just northeast of Bordeaux, and considered Southwest France). Maybe a bit of both.

    French Kiss: A French wine tasting dinner
    First up was an Alsatian sparkling white wine (not called Champagne because its grapes are not grown in Champagne region), made from Chardonnay grapes by Pierre Sparr Marquis. The dessert wine was Chateau Castelnau Suduiraut 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Perfect with hors deourves. This is a red bordeaux from Couchery Rouge.

    Sauvignon Blanc - a Mini Blind Tasting
    This one, like all Cheverny, is actually a blend, with about 10% Chardonnay in the mix. Like the Cheverny, Bordeaux blanc wines tend to be blended, in this case with Semillon. Good friends NorthCarolinaGuy and Gal were in town for a few days and what better reason to have a wine tasting? Why Sauvignon Blanc this time around?
