Tasting 2007 J Vineyards Russian River wines.
It’s always interesting to taste wines with a winemaker at hand to ask questions – the J Vineyards Pinot Gris ($16) from the Russian River valley struck me as full bodied, fragrant, floral, and volumptuous. The reason, I discover, is that Bursick was able to add this fullness and tropical fragrance in the course of fermentation.

    Rusack Vineyards in San Ynez
The Reserve Chardonnay 2008 had excellent concentration of fruit and ripe, succulent flavors, while the 2008 Chardonnay had New World Finesse and good structural integration. As a Californian, I was incredibly loyal to my native state and spent many long, sun-soaked weekends checking out all the new wineries in the Santa Ynez Valley.

“Baboons give Chardonnay a thumbs up,&# was a recent headline on timeslive.co.za. They also produce a barrel fermented Chardonnay and a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon named after the winery's founder, Don Melchor. It's been a few years since I tasted Carmenere. If I remember right, it was a take it or leave it, nothing special, too many other fine wines, don't shop for wine. The first was disappointing.

Here is what Peter writes about this wine on ChampagneGuide.net: a blanc de blancs from a 40-are parcel of ungrafted chardonnay vines in a vineyard called Les Sables, planted between 1951 and 1960.

If the drinker feels "this is so very much about Chardonnay," that's probably not what the wine maker was going for. For me, with brunch on Christmas morning and then savored with BrooklynLady over the rest of the afternoon, this wine was a glorious expression of Chardonnay. can think of many times when my guess was way off base.

Hanzell previously reviewed: 2005 Chardonnay 1995 Pinot Noir.
