Pure grenache (mmm. grenache) hand picked at the end of September and fermented in closed concrete tanks for 21 days before aging in vats for 14-16 months prior to blending and bottling. In the spring of 2008 I learned that the winemaking prodigy behind Pax Wine Cellars, monsieur Pax Mahle, was leaving the eponymously named venture and striking out on his own, once again. and a 2006 Sonoma Coast Syrah Prices range from $32 to $45, about 30% less than Pax Wine Cellars. Rumor had it that disagreements with co-owner(?)

Difficult to compare to recent vintages (which have all included at least some cabernet franc or petit verdot) this is less flamboyant than the 2006 and 2007, and will benefit from extended cellaring. The 2007 Lytton Estate Syrah/Grenache ** is also tight, almost light, almost too searing, with blue fruits and tons of tannin.

From a central California vineyard, Sine Qua Non's 2006 Grenache Raven Series (8% syrah, 26% whole cluster fermented and aged in about 40% new French oak) is a purple color turning ruby on the rim - not opaque - but there is a certain density to the color here. This is the "entry level" wine, which is a joke because it is a complete wine, ripe, complex, cellar-worthy. Syrah, and Grenache. For $14 you can get the 2007 Domaine Rimbert Travers de Marceau , a less intense and complex, but also very delicious wine that omits the Grenache and includes Cinsault and a little bit of Mourvedre.

But his biggest experiment is with his 2008 wine called Le Cigare Volant, a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. But if one makes the right adjustments in winemaking (lower levels of SO2, longer aging in cellar, holding the wine in bottle longer before release) the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience. The reds were mostly blends, with Garnacha (grenache) the most popular varietal used. The 2006 Vina Alarba Red, made with 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah saw no oak aging and showed very nice pure fruit. It isn't a wine to be cellared, but its forest berries and nice structure made it a very nice quaffer, especially at $9 a bottle.

Chateau Grand Moulin 2005 France This red wine from France is a blend of Syrah and Grenache grapes. In the $20 neighborhood, this is a good vintage to drink now but you can also cellar it for a few years Here are 7 of my most recent favorite inexpensive but good wines. tasted some nice Chardonnays by Foxglove/ Varner Wines , L'Angevin , DuMol and Neiman cellars. Interestingly enough, they make a 100% grenache wine called the (2005) St. Drew Neiman of Neiman Cellars is someone I had not met before, but whom I engaged in conversation as I noticed a wine I was familiar with on his table.

In addition to Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Grenache are also widely used, and Syrah and Carignan can be included in smaller amounts, up to 10% individually or up to 15% when they're both included. On the third day open, probably a good proxy for cellaring 10 years, the wine has lovely floral and black licorice notes. Why Bandol?

Mostly Carignan, with some Grenache and Syrah thrown in, the 2005 Domaine des 2 Anes Corbieres Fontanilles was smooth and supple, ripe and complex. In the cellar, Gilles treats the grapes and then the fermenting juice, as delicately as possible. Among the various goodies we sampled that evening was a confit of duck leg. It is all tank.

Sometimes that is the result of poor practice in the field, sometimes its just an effort to grow the wrong grapes in the wrong place, or a lousy growing season, or stupid mistakes in the cellar. And we were surprised to find that our first vintage, grenache/mourvedre, is delicious and very old-world, like a simple ctes du Rhone.

Bedell Cellars Cupola blend was the darkest wine of the flight, with an earthy and floral nose. also liked the Bedell Cellars Reserve Merlot, a wine that to me was quite different from the others. It reminded me of some grenache-based wines from the southern Rhone. The back roads of Pernand-Vergelesses? And a sense of place?

This wine, like the above CDP, is mostly Grenache (90% in this case). Time will tell, as I have enough of this in the cellar to water your lawn. I kept meaning to write posts about some of the interesting wine I tasted in June, but I kept getting derailed. loved this wine back in March at the real Wine Attack Tasting. Good acidity.

first tasted this wine, a blend of 55% Tempranillo and 45% Grenache , at Rosewater Restaurant in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
