Domaine du Closel makes some of my favorite wines, not just white wines, or Loire Valley wines, but some of my favorites, period. Their top cuvee is Clos du Papillon, a rich and complex wine that is usually delicious young but can age for decades, revealing interesting secondary aroma and flavor characteristics. and turnip puree. My Chateauneuf du Pape craze seems to have subsided, and I worked through my case of under $20 wine weeks ago, but I have certainly benefitted from those two experiences. Domaine Mathieu Chateauneuf- du-Pape 2006 (blanc) * Lovely sweet aromas of petrol (sounds strange, right?) It's been a crazy week, sort of. Very enjoyable summer wine. MORE >> -
SLAKED | TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 2008  Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone 2005 **
This was $30 at retail on the Upper West Side, which is a 50% price jump from the 2004, so it falls somewhere between house-wine price and Cellar Selection, but I'd still put a couple bottles aside to see how they evolve This is very close to being the ideal table wine. Those were a Seavey cabernet and a Hansell chardonnay I purchased at Scotto's Wine Cellar nearby before we left. Chapoutier "Belleruche" Cotes- du- Rhone * Tasted last at the City Winery.
