BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2011 My Dinner with Comtes Lafon If I really wanted to drink a Lafon Meursault nowadays, I'd have to buy a bottle at auction because I've been told that, like many of Burgundy's great wines, these require many years of cellaring before they reveal all that they have to offer. I drank a white wine by Domaine des Comtes Lafon the other night the first time I have ever done so. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, JANUARY 30, 2011 Vin Clair and Champagne Terroirs Add that to the fact that Champagne must be crafted in the cellar in a way that most still wines are not, it is easy to understand why some people do not consider Champagne to be a wine of terroir. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2008 Friday Night Bubbles This healthy philosophy is maintained in the cellar, where natural yeasts are used for fermentation, very little new wood is used, and dosage is quite low. WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 2008 Where on earth is Aragon? Of the 4 whites, 1 was a Chardonnay, 2 were blends (both were 80% "Macabeo" [AKA Viora & often used in Spanish sparkling wine or "CAVA"] & 20% Chardonnay) and the 4th was a beautiful bone dry Muscat. The Chardonnay, the 2007 Aragus Campo de Borja was unoaked and had a very lite yellow/straw color. But I found out today. -
ALICE FEIRING | MONDAY, JUNE 30, 2008 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas White Rocket Wine Company Unearths a Treasure in Geode for Millennial Generation Chardonnay Drinkers NAPA, Calif.--(BUSINESS Geode is crafted from vineyards in Santa Barbara County, a classic growing region whose stellar Chardonnays are universally recognized for superior quality. Maybe a vindaloo will cool me down. Hell no. Buy me! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 2008 By the Glass - Thierry Puzelat Edition The Puzelats grow Pinot Noir, Gamay, Côt (called Malbec in Argentina), Bréton (called Cabernet Franc in the film Sideways ), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris (called Pinot Grigio in Italy), and the rarely seen Pineau D'Aunis and Menu Pineau (called Arbois in the Jura). They buzz with energy, some say "wildness." Everything is good. -
WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 2008 Young wine VS. Old wine Like many a Chatanuef du Pape, the best of Cote Rotie are very pricey yet amazingly have cult followings and need many years of cellaring before it is truly approachable and at its best. As to white wines, beginning with Chardonnay or other whites fermented and aged in oak barrels, these are much the same story as Cabernet. -
SLAKED | MONDAY, JUNE 16, 2008 Seven Days Seven Wines Rita Hills Chardonnay "Seasmoke" 2005 * Awesome. The flood plains recede in Iowa, Al Gore endorses Obama, and I finally have a chance to note some of the wines we've been swirling around here. It's been a crazy week, sort of. Now it's time to focus back on something closer to home: summer whites (but not all). Listed in no particular order. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2008 Friday Night Bubbles While the Côte des Bars is well known for Pinot Noir, Montgueux is famous for Chardonnay. Lassaigne makes at least five wines, but I've seen only two of them here in New York: this Blanc de Blancs and also the 2000 vintage wine, a non-dosage wine, one bottle of which is presently napping in my little cellar. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2008 Friday Night Bubbles Cousin cultivates Gamay, Grolleau, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Chenin Blanc - there is something for everyone in this portfolio. They can be funky and a bit rustic, but they evolve beautifully in the glass and in the cellar, and offer a clean and pure expression of the terroir that is Layon. As it turns out, yes. -
ALICE FEIRING | MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas After the deBord Attack » Meet the Sean Hannity of the Wine World May 13, 2008 [link] I wish on Mr. Matt, nothing else in his cellar but Au Bon Climat, Flora Springs, Joseph Phelps, Far Niente and Ridge. Now, what could make the fellow happier? Commentary to follow. Feel free not to wait. Signed.one of the terroir jihadist. Comments ".weird -
Friday Night Bubbles One of these, the all-Chardonnay Montbourgeau L'Etoile costs about $20 and is a great way to sample the oxidized style of Jura without breaking the bank. Anyway. This sparkling wine is 100% Chardonnay and it's just delicious. Chambers Street and Astor have it, so do Prospect Wines and Slope Cellars in Brooklyn. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, MAY 6, 2008 Brooklynguy's Notes on Recession Wines For example, consider one of the white wines recommended by Ben Hagan at Slope Cellars, the 2006 Jardin de la Fruitière. 50-50 blend of Chardonnay and Melon de Bourgogne (the Muscadet grape), this wine is fresh and crisp, lively and well balanced. On Monday I posted a list of wines that cost $14 or less , about $15 including NYS tax. -
WINE TASTING GUY | MONDAY, MAY 5, 2008 NorCal day 2: Sonoma started with a white blend of 50% Semillon & 50% chardonnay that I really enjoyed. There were only 2 wines, a Chardonnay and a bordeaux blend. The 2006 Chardonnay spends 3 months "Sue Lie" (on its lees or mixture of yeast cells, grape pulp, etc), gets filtered, and then goes back into the French oak barrels for another 7-8 months. - Recession Wines - Wines Under $15
Ben Hagan, one of the wine buyers at Slope Cellars in Park Slope, Brooklyn recommends (Slope Cellars prices listed) : Whites: 2006 Caves de Saumur Saumur Les Pouches, $13, LVDH Imports (100% Chenin Blanc). 2006 Jardin de la Fruitiere, $10, VdP Loire Atlantique, JD Headrick Selections (50-50 Chardonnay and Melon de Bourgogne). -
WINE TASTING GUY | SUNDAY, MAY 4, 2008 Day in Napa So off to Chase Wine Cellars to visit my (new) friend Jeff Blaum. From Chase Cellars I called the people of The Terraces Winery. As to the wines I started with the 2006 Chardonnay that only sees 5% new oak & is put through no malolactic fermentation. Chardonnay (that sells for about $70!) Nice wines. NOT A FRUIT BOMB. -
WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008 Polaner tasting standouts began in a French table area and tried some Sancerres (made from Sauvignon Blanc), some white Burgundys (made from Chardonnay) and some white blends. He wants his wines to show a nice purity of fruit (Chardonnay) and as such uses large 600 liter (mostly neutral) barrels. Made from Chardonnay, this wine had an exploding bouquet. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2008 Polaner Spring Portfolio Tasting, 2008 The 06 Cheverny Frileuse VDT (Vin de Table, what happens when the French wine authorities say the wine is not typical of Cheverny, and therefore cannot be called Cheverny) is a blend of equal parts Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sauvignon Rosé (I've never heard of that grape either). But of course I missed some great stuff. Pinon's wines. -
SLAKED | THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 2008 2003 Seavey Vineyards Napa Valley I'm on my way home and I can't think of a reason not to get those two bottles of 2003 Seavey out of the cellar - they are just. William and Mary Seavey began to estate bottle their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1990. 2003 Seavey Vineyards Napa Valley Chardonnay - $40 - 2-3 stars. calling to me. Extremely pleasant today. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2008 Jura Tasting This is Chardonnay, actually. 2006 Houillon Pupillon Chardonnay , $28 - nice, but didn't move me. If you had that bottle in your cellar, would you honestly open it for a bunch of nincompoops like me who have never even tasted a Vin Jaune? Chambers Street Wines held a Jura tasting in the beginning of March. Not even a little bit. -
WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2008 Alto Adige Wines Grand Tasting also tasted Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs, Pinot Biancos, Gewurtztraminers, Sylvaners, Muller Thurgaus, and a few whites which were blends of some of the aforementioned varietals. The Muri-Gries Estate & Monastery Wine Cellar (how would you like to be the person to answer the phone at that place?) new record high for me. Not me. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 2008 Non-Dosage Champagne Still wine is made from one of or some combination of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and possibly but very rarely Pinot Blanc and the obscure Arbane and Petit Meslier. The bottle must be topped off before corking and cellaring. 2000 Chateau Tour Grise Saumur Brut Non Dose , $16 at Slope Cellars. No sugar? -
ALICE FEIRING | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2007 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas Sometimes that is the result of poor practice in the field, sometimes its just an effort to grow the wrong grapes in the wrong place, or a lousy growing season, or stupid mistakes in the cellar. home : wine recommendations : wine girl for hire : bio : articles : contact « Come to a Reading? Main | Hearty Burgundy at Sanford? Tell us! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2007 Winter Whites Recommended to me by the always reliable Amy Louise Pommier at Prospect Wine Shop , it is 100% Chardonnay. Hmmm, impossible to find a wine in our cellar that is more of an opposite to what I've just been talking about. And usually that means red wine. I'm certainly not here to argue, and I love exactly that pairing. Not to be, though. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2007 2005 Jean Manciat Mâcon-Charnay Vieilles Vignes This is a brilliant white wine, a Chardonnay that could go toe to toe with some from the far more famous and expensive Côte d'Or, the home of the Montrachets and of Meursault. Wine Blogging Wednesday is upon us again, installment # 39, and the theme is Silver Burgundy , or the wines of the Côte Chalonnaise or the Mâconnais. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2007 Sauvignon Blanc - a Mini Blind Tasting This one, like all Cheverny, is actually a blend, with about 10% Chardonnay in the mix. The 2006 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Rancho Chimiles (about $27, unsure about availability) did not show well in the blind tasting, getting only 1 third place vote. That's a fun thing to do on a summer evening though, so no complaints. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2007 WBW # 39 Announced - Silver Burgundy I think of endlessly beguiling and beautiful Pinot Noir, and also of Chardonnay - crystalline, tense, and rich. There are a few in my cellar, and I agonize over opening them because they are so special and so dear in price. The grapes are the same as they are in the Côte d'Or - overwhelmingly but not always Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2007 Champagne Notes from the Martin Scott Portfolio want this wine in my cellar! 2004 Schramsberg Vineyards Brut Rose (7+) 66% Chardonnay here. This one is mostly Chardonnay, and had a piercing nose of flowers and minerals, some citrus too. Seemed like it could continue to improve with cellaring. cannot enjoy myself that way. He owes a guest post, I would say. What a nose! | |
