    Chablis Night
We had a bunch of people over for dinner this weekend for Chablis night. Everyone brought along a bottle of Chablis, I made dinner, and we enjoyed eating, drinking, and hanging out. In part, this was inspired by this Chablis post and the reaction to it by Kristin, Henriot's marketing director. But close. Lovely wine.

    Tidal Pool
A few years ago I spent a lot of money on two bottles of Chablis , money that I wish I could have back right now. Chablis is a difficult wine to get spendy with, assuming you want to drink Chablis that shows real Chablis character. I'm not sure that I would buy William Fèvre's wine again if I were paying $75 for Chablis.

How to Train Yourself to Memorize Varietal Characteristics
And since Chardonnay is such a popular grape, and Burgundy, France, such a respected region, you decide to go in this direction. Yet as your eyes scan the enormous wine list, you see the various regions: Chablis, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet (and dozens of others). 2007 Jean Collet Chablis Vielles Vignes.

    Tomatoes Provençal (sort of)
also shared some friendly and informative emails with one of the owners, and viewed photographs of him and his son tasting wine in a Provence cellar. The soils for the white wines supposedly resemble some of the Grand Cru plots of Chablis, with blue marl and limestone. August brings some serious goodness to our local farmer's market.

Wine of the Week - Domaine Oudin Chablis
2006 Domaine Oudin Chablis Les Serres , $22, Jenny & François Selections. Christiane Oudin and her husband Jean-Claude took over her father's small 2 hectare estate in Chichée, very close to the town of Chablis, in 1988. There is also a basic Chablis which is not imported to New York, although it does go to other states.

Oxidative wines - vin jaune - Domaine Berthet-Bondet, Jura
The Cotes de Jura Chardonnay 2006 is matured in neutral oak barrels and has a vein of minerality so rich it would out Chablis out of business if the world craved minerally chardonnay. The oxidative process girds the wine for decades or centuries in the cellar. Oxidative wines are an essential wine tasting reference point.

Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas
Sometimes that is the result of poor practice in the field, sometimes its just an effort to grow the wrong grapes in the wrong place, or a lousy growing season, or stupid mistakes in the cellar. Voila, it was Clarks Faux Chablis, a wine I had no idea even existed. Main | Hearty Burgundy at Sanford? Do check it out. Yin and yang, right?

    WBW # 39 Announced - Silver Burgundy
I think of endlessly beguiling and beautiful Pinot Noir, and also of Chardonnay - crystalline, tense, and rich. There are a few in my cellar, and I agonize over opening them because they are so special and so dear in price. Here's why: Chablis is unique, and probably deserves its own WBW event. Is this even possible?

It Was A Good Day To Be A WIne Geek
Stag's Leap Cellars was rolling out their new chardonnay at BLT Fish; someone just canceled would I like to attend. They have a line of cabernet and chardonnay that truly reflect what the state has to offer. The wine was the Stag's Leap 2004 Arcadia chardonnay. It was very Chablis-like. I'm just a wine geek.
