2005 Buchignani Ranch Zinfandel ** from 44 barrels of 96% zinfandel with 4% carignane from the same "small planting of old-vine zinfandel on the Buchignani Ranch on Dutcher Creek Road in the hills on the far western edge of the Alexander Valley appellation." 2004 Dynamite Hill Petite Sirah this wine a behemoth pimp in a blue fedora.

What do you think of when you think of López de Heredia, the great master of Rioja? Perhaps this is why it took me so long to try their entry-level red wine, Viña Cubillo. recently checked out some of their unique single varietal appellation wines (Carignan & Petite Sirah) and was so (surprisingly) impressed by their quality that I included them in a blog post  with some recommendations.  My favorites of the day were still the appellation Carignan and Petite Sirah.  And taste I did. 

A lite Carignan based wine was casually enjoyed.  I went away (within Israel) for the sabbath to a friend of the family.  A wonderful woman and great cook it is always a nice shabbat when spent with her and her family.  After attending early services (started at 6:20AM - YIKES) we had a " kiddush " in the sukkah  of the winemaker friend. 

And two wines in their appellation series that are of interest are the Carmel "old vine" Carignan & the Carmel Petit Sirah.  I'm sorry for the delay in writing this post.  I have gotten MANY requests for my Rosh Hashana suggestions.  I'm pressed for time (aren't we all) so here goes. A favorite Cabernet of mine is the Yarden Cabernet. 

Anyway, this Geyserville, from 70% zinfandel, 18% carignane, 10% petite sirah, and 2% mataro, is not without complexity. So I've been drinking a lot of Ridge Vineyards recently, and frankly, it's starting to get a little difficult to tell one zin from the next. But there are differences, subtle, but they're there.

80% zinfandel, 16% petite sirah, and 4% carignane, a 14.7% Opened as an afterthought three days ago and stuck at the bottom of the fridge afterwards, we opened this back up last night to accompany grass-fed shell steaks - doused with Juliana's coveted parsley-garlic sauce - and freedom fries.

From 16 acres with a rough-average age of about 60 years , this "100% Hillside Grown Old Vine Carignane" from Sonoma displayed a dusky ruby tint, with strong ground hot pepper and lavender on the nose. Spicy and mildly sweet on the attack, with good underlying structure.

varietal that was planted in abundance at one point is Carignan, (AKA Carignana), which got its name from the subregion on Aragon "Carignena". Also of note, as long as we are discussing Carignan, is that it is the most widely planted grape in France today ( according to winepros.org - bet you didn't know that - I sure didn't).

The blend is Mourvedre, Carignan, and Grenache. This is a blend of Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache. I was very much impressed with the Jenny & Francois portfolio , so much so that I decided to buy a few and taste them at home with dinner. You know what this means? This is important, as the dollar buys less and less wine these days.

The 2005 Carmel Appellation Carignan is another wine made from a not-so-traditional grape varietal. Known in Spain where it is thought to have originated as "Cariñena ", Carignan is most often thought of as a blending grape. This was the 5th year that this event was held and there seem to be more wines each year.  Worth a shot!

Is that because the natural versions exhibit the true flavors and aromas of carignan, for example? 2005 Clos des Camuzeilles VdP (Languedoc) - 100% carignan from 70 year old vines. Here are a few things that struck me during the tasting: If I had tasted blind, I would have guessed wrong on the grape varieties in many of these wines.

2- 2005 Fontedicto Pirouette #5 $15 Grapes: Carignan Languedoc, France (for some reason, this one, which was rich and sunny and fruit forward wasnt a smash hit. There are some great Languedoc carignans, and others,round my way (put "Montpeyroux vins" into Google and youll see what I mean), but thanks for the tip. Many thanks! Epine?

In addition to Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Grenache are also widely used, and Syrah and Carignan can be included in smaller amounts, up to 10% individually or up to 15% when they're both included. The dollar sucks and my daughter is only 1 year old. I'll answer for you - yes, it would be nice. But that ain't happenin' for me anytime soon.

Mostly Carignan, with some Grenache and Syrah thrown in, the 2005 Domaine des 2 Anes Corbieres Fontanilles was smooth and supple, ripe and complex. I went back to Black Mountain Wine House , this time with an old buddy, and we grabbed prime seats at the bar for the evening. Turned out to be a real winner. Magdalener Classico ($8/glass).

The red varietals that define this region, syrah, carignan, grenache, mouvedre and to some extent merlot and cabernet sauvignon are always blended together is some way shape or form depending on the appellation or sub-appellation. So the Alphabet City Wine Co. has been open for about a month now and all is well. Can you tell? Okay moving on.
