Randall Grahm - the way back is the way forward - part II
But his biggest experiment is with his 2008 wine called Le Cigare Volant, a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. Has global warming changed winegrowing in California in your lifetime? Randall Grahm is one of America’s most fascinating winemakers and winery owners. But Grahm has had a change of heart. Absolutely.

    Blind Tasting of Twelve Syrahs
At Snooth's tasting room I had the opportunity to sample 12 Syrahs selected by Greg Dal Piaz. They were all 100% Syrah varietal, so it still amazes me how much of a range there was in the flights. 2005 LaTour Vineyards Napa Valley California Syrah 14.8% - $26.50 Please note all bottles were opened 2.5 Liked it. very nice.

    Cat Rotie Syrah California
Syrah is the only grape used to make the famous Rhône wines of Côte Rotie and Hermitage, but it also is the major component of most Rhône blends, this California red wine is a take on that famous French grape.

    California Cult Wine Release Schedule
If you're into California Cult wines, then you might want to know when they come out, and how much they will cost, but there is no comprehensive release schedule for these wines -- anywhere -- and the cults themselves are the last people to ask. You aren't alone. This list is by no means complete, and it may very well be inaccurate.

Some people brought in bottles from trips to wineries in New York and California, and others were looking to try something out on us before pouring it at Thanksgiving. This wine helped us two on our goal to the Wine Century Club since it has 40% Kékfrankos, 30% cabernet franc, 15% syrah, 5% Kekoporto, 5% pinot noir, 5% cabernet sauvignon.

Wine starts in the Vineyard - Golan Heights Winery
Of particular interest was the 2003 Yarden Syrah - a big California style Syrah with dark fruit, this concentrated wine with big soft tannins will coat your palate and leave you with a nice long finish.  Made a trip back up to the Golan Heights today.  I even got to take a trip up a row of vines on a mechanical harvester.

What a Day! 2 Wine Tastings!!
of Syrah was very interesting.  It actually reminded me a bit of a California Zinfandel.  A Sangiovese/Syrah/Cab Franc blend was intriguing and determined to be a great food wine.  While I went away (within Israel) for the sabbath to a friend of the family.  Traditionally, this often includes cake , crackers , and fish."

Would you like to taste and try to identify them.blind? For some people, even experienced wine lovers, this is an exercise in apprehension and annoyance. Never met him before.

I Learned that I Know Nothing About Wine
Here are some of the wines that stood out for me: 1992 Edmunds St John Syrah Grand Heritage. Another excellent California wine. The more I learn about wine, the more I realize that I don't know. Even within the wine regions I know, I don't really know anything. Same is true with wine, I would say. had never met any of these folks.

Less know wine region(s) in the news
Washington State, is known to produce some exceptional reds, in particular Merlot, Syrah and yes, of course, Cabernet Sauvignon (and blends including all or some of the aforementioned varietals). So instead, I want to bring up wines from another not-too-discussed wine region - Washington state. Happy lesser known wine region wine tasting!

    Young wine VS. Old wine
Whereas a good Bordeaux can age for 30, 40, 50 years and more, Pushing your California Cab past 20 years or Australian Shiraz past 10 might be a bit of a gamble. California Pinot on the other hand is generally made in a fruit forward style that I gather is made to be drunk young. What is better, an old wine or a young wine?

    Avalon California Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Even though this red wine from California is labeled Cabernet Sauvignon , upon further research I found that it is in fact a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Syrah , 4% Merlot and 1% Tempranillo. On the finish there is a spice and vanilla on the palate. This is a decent every day Cab and can be found in the $8 range. alcohol

and "California promotes wines that dont suck" Um.since when did fresh herbs become weird?! And millions of people think that California wines dont suck.but that certainly isnt an indication of greatness. Doesnt the fellow realize there would be no California wine without Europe? Now, what could make the fellow happier? Sheesh.

Making my way past the French wines I landed in the California section. But the lure of the reds grabbed me and it was the California reds and people I either knew or recognized who convinced me that white time was up. Syrahs & 2 Cab's were tried at the tasting. Zinfandels and 1 Syrah. don't know. great wine.

could write about the fabulous Israeli Cab or the not so fabulous French Bordeaux, the overrated California red, or awful Israel Merlot (it was BAD) but who cares?!?!! Merlot, Cab, Syrah - been there done that. lighter wine than a Cab, merlot or Syrah, Barbera is said to be the most (or second most) planter varietal in Italy.

Best bet (kosher) Israeli wines for Passover - at all price ranges.
They make a Yiron Syrah which is very nice as well, but their regular Yiron, which is a Bordeaux blend (a blend of the grapes used in French Bordeaux), sometimes with Syrah added in is just a fabulous wine. Also from Yarden is their Syrah and Pinot Noir. Bustan's wines are 100% varietal - a Cabernet , a merlot & a Syrah.

    Better Wine Bar experiences
We finally decided on a California Syrah.  the other California Syrah option was brought out and proved to be a very fine wine.  My date had not yet eaten so we ordered a tuna tartare which actually went quite well with the Syrah (even though one might think that a tannic Syrah & salty raw fish might clash).

John, From Parkers Wine Advocate Im going to get more articulate on this one but when it was first opened, it was shy, with some fruit fowardness and not that much animal syrah character. Many thanks!
