    Viña Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
    Here we have a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Colchagua valley in Chile, produced by DOMAINES BARONS DE ROTHSCHILD-LAFITE who took over the Los Vascos estate (Los Vascos meaning The Basques, in honour of its Basque origins) in 1988. There is much going on here for under $10. This wine has a deep and dark ruby red color.

    Due to its gravel dominated soil it is planted in grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Cabernet Franc (35%), and Merlot(30%). We've reached about 50% veraison in our small plot of Merlot at Jaeger Vineyard just west of Big Ranch Road in Oak Knoll District. Our clone 181 is catching up slowly on last year.     Salmon Run Meritage 2008
    did pass on a few nice California reds though and stayed with the Finger Lakes and a Salmon Run Meritage 2008 ( $11 ), a blend of 54% Cabernet Franc, 39.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.5% Grilled a few NY strip steaks this past week-end and looked forward to opening a nice red wine for change.     Cabernet Franc, 9.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5.6% To me, sometimes fruit is a better thirst quencher than a simple glass of water. And the Macari Rose 2010 from Long Island's North Fork is a case in point. The wonderful wet aromas of a freshly cut watermelon. luscious ripe strawberries picked this morning. merlot, 14.5% alcohol.

    Two More From Cinnabar.
    After a few beer nights, I finally was able to open, taste and drink two remaining red wines I have received from Cinnabar Winery; the 2008 Sextant Vineyards Syrah and the 2006 Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon.     After bottling I headed up to Napa for blending the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon in preparation for bottling in May. It's been a busy day. This morning I bottled the first batch of a new "dark lager".     The Show Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 California
    The Show is a big, rich, deep Cabernet, although according to the website there are also small quantities of Merlot for softness, Cabernet Franc for earthiness and acidity, and even Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot to give it a deep ruby color. all aged in French and American oak. Big is the key descriptor here. Good bang for the buck.

Last year I reviewed a 2007 Petite Sirah from Concannon Vineyard , so I was delighted to recently receive the 2008 vintage. In 1996, Concannon was the first Livermore Valley vineyard to place its land into a permanent conservation easement.
