Once upon a time I owned six Riedel red Burgundy glasses, the Vinum series. These are the glasses with the rather large bowls and the tapered lip, perfect for nurturing the delicate aromas of Pinot Noir, and designed to deposit the wine at the precise point on the tasters tongue that will result in the optimal flavor experience.

CHARDONNAY: RESEARCHING THE HUMBLE BEGININGS OF ONE OF THE WORLDS MOST POPULAR GRAPES
Interestingly enough Chardonnay's beginnings are linked to another wildly popular grape, Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir's history is pretty intense stuff that I will have explore in another post but research up ‘til now suggests that the mother grape of the Pinot fam originated in Northeastern France or Southern Germany.

CHARDONNAY: A STUDY IN WHAT WENT WRONG
when Hanzell Vineyards imported new French oak barrels, wineries mimicked the way wine was made in Chardonnay's old home of Burgundy. He was in love with the wines of Burgundy and felt he could emulate that style in California. They were told that this style of chardonnay was reminiscent of the wines from the cool hills of Burgundy.

Tasting - Martin Scott Wines portfolio tasting 2008
From Bordeaux we settled down in the Burgundy section.  There was a very sweet and warm woman telling me about her move to Burgundy, prompted following a "visit" there.  I tasted a good deal of both red (Pinot Noir) and white (Chardonnay) burgundy. But these over-the-top Burgundies were far a few between.

What I Drank on my Summer Vacation
Here are notes on some of them: 2007 Robert Sinskey Vin Gris of Pinot Noir , price unknown. Do you realize that in New York City in just over a week from now, about 400,000 kids, literally, are going to write short essays with almost the exact same title as this post? Another summer comes to an end. love summer in New York City.

Yet he also says, "He does seem to have swallowed the entire Burgundy philosophy hook, line and sinker, meaning that for him a grand cru will always produce better wines than a premier cru and it is doubtful he has ever met a Burgundy he didnt like. Burgundy needs a spokesperson, though." the Parker Burgundy world is different.

Interview with Pierre Bollet, Brand Manager Chamarré
Many entrepreneurs had failed making winegrowers from Bordeaux , Burgundy , and Languedoc work together. We have already many fans of our Grande Réserve Pinot Noir for example. Tell us a little about the history of Chamarré. Chamarré's history is a series of firsts. The reasons for this underperformance? and the worst?

Chamarre Grand Reserve Pinot Noir 2005
All Pinot Noir but from 2 different regions: half from Corsica and half from Burgundy AOC grapes. very soft style to this Pinot Noir with a nose of mellow red fruits, violets and a very smooth minerality with a palate of raspberries, licorice and vanilla (there is also a slight toastiness from 6 months in oak).

    Young wine VS. Old wine
While Bordeaux sits atop the throne of wine (alongside its more elegant Queen - Burgundy) what troubles me about many of the top Bordeaux is its need to be aged before it is even approachable. California Pinot on the other hand is generally made in a fruit forward style that I gather is made to be drunk young.

Belle Pente - Old World Pinot from Oregon
Pinot Noir in Oregon's Willamette Valley is, in my opinion, still trying to figure out what it wants to be. Or is it in the style of Burgundy, with more of an emphasis on delicate aromatics, balancing acidity, and earth tones? prefer the Burgundian style of Pinot. Most producers have no trouble selling out their stock.

Bold cabernets and buttery Chardonnays trumped the pinched pencil-lead of first-growth Bordeaux and the ashen angularity of Grand Cru Burgundy.". Maybe he wrote it under the influence of 2,3 glasses of 16% Pinot Noir. Now, what could make the fellow happier? Commentary to follow. Feel free not to wait. Comments ".weird Sheesh.

    NorCal day 2: Sonoma
We tried a very nice Chardonnay (the 2006 Emelia's Cuvee) that I struggled with a little as I could not grasp the nose from the traditional Burgundy glass. Woke up at the hotel bright and early.OK, maybe not THAT early, and went to the hotel courtyard for a "continental breakfast" of cereal, fresh pastries & coffee. Serious pretension.

    Polaner tasting standouts
began in a French table area and tried some Sancerres (made from Sauvignon Blanc), some white Burgundys (made from Chardonnay) and some white blends. Hubery Lamy of Burgundy presented 3 wines. My favorite was the 2007 Pinon Vouvray Silex Noir which had a crisp nose with ripe tropical fruit and great fruit & acidity on the palate.

    A Few Mature Wines
Here are a few recent experiences with mature wine: 2001 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Quarter Mile Lane Vineyard , $40. Just like in Burgundy - they say you should drink your 2001's and 2004's while waiting for your 2002s to mature. might compare 2001 in Oregon to 2001 in Burgundy. Not that they're sub-par, they are not.

NV Cedric Bouchard Blanc de Noir Inflorescence , about $55, Polaner Selections. Bouchard is an infant of a Champagne house, created in 2000 and located in the Côte des Bar, the southern part of Champagne where the climate resembles that of Burgundy, and where Pinot Noir is the most common grape.

More Dressner / Polaner Highlights - Reds
was also surprised to find a Pinot in this lineup, the 2006 Pinot Noir , and it was good! I'll have to tell you about the red Burgundies next week More notes from the great Polaner Spring Tasting, this time red wines from the Dressner producers. And it probably needs a bit more time in the bottle. Very long and intense.

By The Glass - Oregon Pinot Edition
Although there are problems with the wines in general (too sweet to my palate), on the whole I much prefer them to the 2004's we tasted during our recent Five Nights of Oregon Pinot festivities. If you haven't tried Oregon wine because you're a Burgundy lover, you might try something from 2005. It's kind of a one-hit-wonder.

Skurnik Tasting - my favorites (finally)
also found their '06 Estate "Scallop Shelf" Pinot Noir to be one of the more subtle & elegant Pinots will nice minerality and earthiness and a very nice finish. Etude is known for their Pinot Noir. enjoyed a nice Pinot Gris & Chardonnay of theirs. Sadly, the prices for Peay wines are quite high.

    Jenny & Francois Portfolio Tasting
In case you're not familiar with Jenny & Francois , they import natural wines from all over France, from heavy hitters like Burgundy to unsung heroes like the Côtes de Duras (just northeast of Bordeaux, and considered Southwest France). Binner - I liked everything I tasted - pinot gris, riesling, gewurtztraminer, even the pinot noir.

    More Terry Theise Grower Champagnes
If I had to make a generalization about the wines, it would be this: they are absolutely individual, as are the wines of Burgundy or any other great region. love the entry level wine, called Expression, an interesting blend that is mostly Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, with a touch of Chardonnay thrown in for good measure.

So Far, I Stink at the Wine Splurge
2002 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Red Hills Estate , Oregon. And a few ill-advised Burgundy purchases - why spend so much on village wine, even if the producer is Roumier or Mugnier? Just like you, I have my limits on what I'll spend on a bottle of wine. Why $50? That's about 13% of my cellar that I would classify as a splurge.

Five Nights of Oregon Pinot Noir - Part II
Belle Pente bottles a range of whites, including a Pinot Gris, a Riesling, a Gewurztraminer, and of course a Chardonnay. There are "entry level" Pinots are called Carlton District and Dundee Hills, wines typically made from younger wines from an assortment of vineyards. Most recently back in March at a wine bar in Portland.

Five Nights of Oregon Pinot Noir - Part I
I've become such an old world wine nut that I seem to reach for a Burgundy every time I want Pinot. In that spirit, BrooklynLady and I dug into the ol' wine fridge and sampled five Oregon Pinots from the Willamette Valley. Dick and Dierdre Shea have been growing and selling Pinot grapes since 1989 in the Willamette Valley.

La Grande Annee and the other higher end wines, including the precious and incredibly expensive Vieille Vignes Francaises, a Blanc de Noirs (made entirely of red grapes, in this case Pinot Noir), are a bit out of my reach. My first blog entry - a blind date at a local wine bar.
Lite it was, and we settled on a Pinot Noir. But now, where would the Pinot be from? would have loved to have splurged on a premier cru Burgundy, but I have yet to make my first million (does that count for anything anymore?). We settled on a New Zealand Pinot Noir priced at $44. On to the wine. NEVER AGAIN!

Silver Burgundy Dinner - WBW 39 Preview
As a little preview, I want to share a bit about three interesting Silver Burgundy wines that we sampled with dinner the other night. We popped and poured a mature Pinot Noir with our cheese course, the 1998 Hugues et Yves de Suremain Mercurey 1er Cru La Bondue , ($19, Chambers Street Wines). Who knows the politics of the area.

    WBW # 39 Announced - Silver Burgundy
What do you think of when you hear "Burgundy?" I think of endlessly beguiling and beautiful Pinot Noir, and also of Chardonnay - crystalline, tense, and rich. And this is the theme for Wine Blogging Wednesday #39 - taste a bottle(s) of Silver Burgundy, wine from either the Côte Chalonnaise or the Mâconnais.
