Marcassin swings at La Tache but ultimately breaks arm patting self on back
The most recent newsletter from Marcasin (pdf), written by owner Helen Turley and husband John Wetlaufer, makes for fascinating reading. Really, the newsletter is shocking in the aggressive swipes it takes at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti-La Tache. The Wine Advocate lost much of the credibility the publication had for Burgundy.

Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate [Q&A]
The moves notably included promoting Antonio Galloni to a greater role, as Galloni took over reviewing California wines from Parker himself as well as adding coverage of Burgundy (ex-Beaujolais) to his beat that already included Champagne and all of Italy. He took a break from tasting in Burgundy, where he is now, to respond. And NFL?

Who makes money in wine writing?
Consider Allen Meadows, who writes a quarterly e-newsletter Burghound , focusing almost entirely on Burgundy. Jancis Robinson and Steven Tanzer also run newsletters and subscription websites but no figures were publicly available. “I do it on the web for free.&#. Blogging is not a path to riches. Especially for wine.

Does the Wine Advocate buy over $700,000 worth of wine a year?
To find out what the Wine Advocate spends on wine according to the stated policy, I crunched the numbers from the December issue, #186, which included 3,067 reviews of wines from Napa, White Burgundy, Australia, Champagne, Greece, Cyprus, and Portugal. However, many people wonder if even the revised figure is true. respect that….”

Natural wines, premox, chenin blanc, 07 Port and Rhone – John Gilman
John Gilman, author of the newsletter The View from the Cellar , joins us again for a Q&A. perfect example in my opinion of going over the top and valuing the process over the results could be seen with Domaine Leroy’s wines in the great, great red Burgundy vintage of 1993. Natural wines are growing in popularity. think not.

FTC, Hong Kong, more nudity, Gourmet mag RIP, NYC dining – sipped and spit
Should this apply to magazines, newsletters, or online magazines? In Burgundy, 713 people take off their clothes to be photographed among the vines–all in the name of demonstrating against global warming. SIPPED: disclosure. Why not? As discussed previously, enforcement will be an issue. SIPPED: more nudity and wine. Bloomberg ].

Screwcaps, scores, riesling, the Loire, Cali cab: John Gilman part two
We’re back with Part Deux of our interview with John Gilman, author of the newsletter A View from the Cellar ( part one is here ). Partly this was out of necessity, as my business was handling old and rare wines, and Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, classic Piemonte and Rhônes were the core of my business in those days. The Loire.

John Gilman - View from the Cellar - On collecting and collectible values
He started his career in wine retail, later worked as a sommelier with a soft spot for Burgundy, and now has embarked on the foolhardy notion of writing a bi-monthly wine newsletter, A View from the Cellar. Except maybe he’s not so foolhardy since, unlike a blog, he actually charges for his newsletter! Onward!

    WBW #36 - Naked Chardonnay
I tasted two un-oaked Chardonnays for the 3rd Anniversary of WBW, both from Burgundy, but not from the Cote d'Or. read in the recent Burghound newsletter that Chablis in 2005 in many cases is more about Chardonnay than about the terroir that is Chablis. Happy 3rd anniversary Wine Blogging Wednesday ! And why not participate? Many more.

Remembering a Trip to Oregon with a 2003 Pinot
One morning, still in bed, I was reading a feature about Daedalus Cellars in an Oregon wine newsletter and I looked out the window and watched a coyote ambling through the vineyards, not 50 feet from the inn. have seen the wines at Burgundy Wine Company in Manhattan too, if you live in my area. magical experience.
