Massachusetts wine shops worth seeking out
And as of last year, there’s no sales tax on wine (and beer and spirits) in the state, so that helps stretch the consumer’s wine dollar seven percent farther than other states. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the North End but they also ship. The Wine Bottega , 341 Hanover St, Boston. Waltham, MA. Sandwich, MA.

How to Open and Enjoy an Old Bottle of Wine
He told me to stand it up a week in advance, not to move it at all during that time if I could help it, as it would probably have a lot of sediment. It's not just an aesthetic issue—the sediment can be bitter, and its presence definitely changes the flavors of the wine. Wines, especially red Burgundy, can change color in the glass.

    Thanksgiving Day Wines 2011
said the man at the next table, helping himself to a glass of the Soave I brought to a popular BYOB restaurant in Manhattan. the soils are volcanic and the wine shows a definitive sense of terroir. Curious about what wine to bring for Thanksgiving dinner? Suavia Soave Clasico DOC 2009 Veneto, Italy. Very mineral rich!"

Remembering to Care About Proper Storage
And my friend who the other day I helped drive a few cases from his house to another location - he asked if driving and the bumpy trunk can hurt the wines. I've had a little bit of mature Burgundy before, and these wines were both striking in how young they felt. Not tasted, necessarily, and definitely not aromatically young.

Comparing the 2008 and 2009 Vintages in Burgundy via Domaine Fourrier
Will the 2009's be as detailed and expressive of specific terroir as Burgundy lovers want them to be? Will the 2008's be delicious wines that offer the pleasure that Burgundy lovers want? have no idea yet, but this tasting helped me form some initial ideas. This one will definitely have a place in my cellar.

    A Conversation with Jean-Marie Fourrier - Part 2
The wine school definition of filtration that I learned is this - 'filtration is the acceleration of the process of sedimentation.' BG: Was there anyone in Burgundy that you could talk to as you were thinking about this? I would say "Yes dad, and now we help each other and it's good for everyone." didn't want to rack the wines.

    What's in an Old Bottle?
Of course it isn't always possible, and with the Vallana Spanna wines, there are questions and few definitive answers. Before going to the dinner I told Peter about it and showed him the list of wines we would drink, hoping that he would help me to build some context for what I would experience. Well, that's what we did.

Wines of Origins: The Real Deal
The Center for Wine Origins was created to help Americans remember that location matters when it comes to wine. Not too many decades ago, nefarious producers and negotiants used inexpensive wine from the south of France to add volume to Pinot Noir from Burgundy. Guests at the 21 Club. Low Yields and Surprising Wines
This is Aligoté - there was plenty of acidity and the finish was definitely of a chalky mineral character. Tags: Alice and Olivier De Moor Chablis Bernard Baudry Burgundy Changes in climate bring high yields in some years, low yields in others. But sometimes a low yield vintage can bring nice surprises for us wine drinkers.

    Friday Night Bubbles
This is a blend of mostly Chardonnay and some Aligoté made in Savigny-lès-Beaune by a producer that makes only Crémant, highly unusual for a Burgundy producer. wish I had a definitive answer for you, but I do not. Read that three times and see if you can help falling asleep. Tags: Friday Night Bubbles Burgundy

    Highly regarded WINE BAR
Said wine bar is technically located in the West Village, but it is just North of trendy Tribeca - and it definitely had a trendy aura to it. The two people behind the bar that helped out were also quite knowledgeable, and definitely NOT pretentious. The good: the staff was really great. Because it was. There are NO TABLES!

This could help to make events of this size more manageable. began in a French table area and tried some Sancerres (made from Sauvignon Blanc), some white Burgundys (made from Chardonnay) and some white blends. My Bordeaux One Night Stand
And yes, I am definitely capable of being that cheesy. The one negative thing I can say is this: the wine doesn't have the same energy that I experience in my favorite wines from Burgundy, Beaujolais, or the Loire Valley. I know it's a touchy time to talk about Bordeaux , but I'm going for it anyway. Do you do that? Anyway. We

We also throw in a couple tools to help remember the good stuff. This wine was definitely grown in a valley. know it's a bit cheesy but I just can't help it. Everyone knows about Bordeaux and most people are somewhat familiar with the pinot noirs of Burgundy. So the Alphabet City Wine Co. Can you tell? Okay moving on.

Silver Burgundy Roudup - WBW #39
As I keep hearing (and learning for myself) about Burgundy - it's all about the producer. Lafon's Montrachet and Meursault sell for LOTS of money, and are some of the more sought after wines in Burgundy. He says the 05 VV was opened too early, but he calls it a definite rebuy that should be great down the line. hear that.

Another $10 Wine, This Time French
I didn't love my recent foray into inexpensive Spanish white wine, but thanks to a few helpful comments, I have some new Albarinos to sample some day. Amy, the always helpful and deeply knowledgeable manager of Prospect Wine Shop in Park Slope recommended this wine. This wine is a Vins de Pays (C ountry Wine ) des Cotes de Gascogne.

So I helped them out by bringing this to their attention, and then by actually opening some wines for them and creating a little "self-pour" tasting table featuring the wines of Chidaine, Baudry, and Marechal.and this turned out to be a lot of fun. Definitely a $15 beauty. hauled my butt into Manhattan (!) Impossible in this venue.

There are well chosen wines from the Loire Valley, Burgundy, the Rhone, Bordeaux, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, and of course America. Maybe I'm too picky, but there just aren't that many high-end restaurants that appeal to me these days. Sue me.

So I might as well try to be helpful. Don't spend too much money , because its no fun to watch your uncle fill his glass to the rim with pricey premier cru Burgundy and then spill half on the table. These are definitely off dry wines, but they go well with food. Who am I to buck the trend? Don't throw extra wood on the fire.

Golden Nugget of a Tasting, Part II
The highlight for me though was tasting 6 Burgundies, 3 of them Grand Cru wines. have never tasted Grand Cru Burgundy before and I'll tell you, it felt great - something I could get used to. The Bordeaux of the night was definitely the 1983 Chateau Gruaud Larose. am happy to help whoever purchases the wine in that endeavor.
