Hard Hard to tell which phrase would strike more fear in the heart of Napa: finances that are “very weak” or “on life support.” 8221; Even foreclosure has been the fate of 10 vineyards in the valley that once was called “Eden.”

Paul Draper’s forty years and the making of Ridge Monte Bello
But after tasting several dozen wines from vintages dating back to 1968, it’s clear to me that from vines grown on the fractured limestone, Ridge Monte Bello has been able to achieve this rare feat.
There was Paul Draper to meet me and the dozen other journalists and members of the trade attending the tasting, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ridge.* group of ten tasters Paul Draper is, without question, one of the world’s great winemakers. Even though he has every reason to be an egotistical blowhard, he remains humble and democratic in spirit, asking sincere questions of

Antica Terra, Botanica, and Lillian
Tasted alongside other wines of the vintage, it clearly stands head and shoulders above the rest. Unfortunately, my palate was slightly cracked that day, so I tasted the wines only briefly. We also tasted Maggie's cult central coast syrah, Lillian. The 2006 *** (which On Monday I was fortunate to attend a lunch at Eleven Madison Park hosted by Maggie Harrison, the proprietor of Antica Terra winery in Amity, Oregon. In short, Maggie's pinot noirs from Willamette Valley are not of this world.

Blind tasting is tough – tasting Bordeaux 2005 with Robert Parker
On Wednesday evening I attended a tasting of fifteen wines from Bordeaux 2005. Aside from that outrageous apparent quality of the wines, the tasting had two other attractions: the ability to taste some of the top wines blind and to do so in the company of Robert Parker.
Even though the tasting was blind, everyone knew the lineup of wines and it included some of the most heralded wines of the vintage as the Parker scores indicate:
The vintage was widely hailed as superb and pre-recession demand drove the prices into the stratosphere. Over 100 of us packed a room

Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel #2 - Poulsard
So it's good timing, then, that the Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel's theme in its second meeting is Poulsard (or Ploussard if you are from Arbois), one of the red grapes of the Jura. Two of them were not included in this tasting - Ganevat's utterly delicious Poulsard is simply sold out, and Domaine de L'Octavin's Poulsard was also unavailable. I was joined for this tasting by Levi Dalton , the much Jura wines are kind of obscure, outside of the wine-geek world. Finding them requires seeking them out, your local shoppe is unlikely to carry them.

Tasting Other Blogger's Recommendations
Here are the very positive results of tasting four wines on blogger and reader recommendations over the past month or so. So far I've located three of them and tasted two of them. First, I tasted a NV Raymond Boulard Brut Nature (non-dosage), and I wasn't crazy about it until there was merely one glass left, and then the wine blossomed into something beautiful. Bloggers and blog readers recommend wines constantly and it's impossible to try all of them. But this is how I learn about new wines I want to try - your recommendations.

Spring Tastings in NYC
If you live in or near New York City, and you like wine, here are some tastings that should not be missed: Dressner Selections Real Wine Attack 2007, March 22-24, FREE. This is a tasting of an amazing portfolio of producers primarily from the Loire Valley, but also including one or two from Burgundy, Beaujolais, Languedoc-Roussillon, Bugey, Bordeaux, and Piedmont. Friday March 23 from 6:00 - These are producers who make "real" wine, not using wood chips, for example (a la the manipulation being heatedly discussed on Eric Asimov's blog right now). No excuse to miss this one,

Broadbent sues, California’s anxiety, NY retail, wine cheaper than water

Michael Michael Broadbent, founder of the wine department at Christie’s, has sued Random House publisher of The Billionaire’s Vinegar ( buy on amazon ). The Daily Mail writes: “The Broadbent claims the book suggests he invented a bid for another of the Jefferson wines – a half-bottle of 1784 Margaux – to ensure the successful bidder paid more than was necessary.”

A Golden Nugget of a Tasting
I debated with myself about sharing this golden nugget of a wine tasting, and the good side of me won. When Sotheby's does a fine and rare wine auction they usually hold a pre-auction tasting. You will not get to sample the 1945 Mouton or a La Tache, but you can taste loads of wonderful, and to my budget, prohibitively expensive wines, all for a fair $75 fee. Problem is, the tasting lasts for exactly one hour, and Sotheby's wine staff open 1, that is one, uno, a singular bottle of each wine that they serve at the tasting, and first come first serve it is. That means

Blind Tasting: Bordeaux Varietals, Part I
One of my wine and food resolutions for 2007 is to do more blind tasting. love the idea of tasting blind, letting your senses, and only your senses take control (isn't that some 1980's pop song?). I would love to participate in a blind tasting of the sort that Eric Asimov's gang do for the NY Times Wines of the Times column. I Professional wine ratings, pre-conceived notions, and all other biases should go right out the window.

Golden Nugget of a Tasting, Part II
About 30 people showed up at Sotheby's for the pre-auction tasting, as compared to about 100 last time. After an hour of tasting (and I'm sorry, but when its old fine wine I don't spit, I don't care if its uncouth), I was worried that I might pull a Steve Wynn and shove my elbow through one of the canvases, but I remained in control of myself. In sum: I tasted some really sick wine last night. I went back for seconds and even thirds at some bottles.

Mayacamas Vineyards – tasting notes and more, from John Gilman
There is some duplication with Evan Dawson’s travel post from yesterday but there is also much new, including John’s tasting notes from Mayacamas Cabernet 2003, 1991, 1985, 1974, & 1968. When Englishman Steven Spurrier canvassed California looking for top examples from the state to include in a blind tasting of top French wines versus Californian wines for a 1976 tasting for his Parisian wine shop, the 1970 Mayacamas cabernet was the one wine that he really wanted to include in the lineup, but which had already been sold out at the winery. John Gilman, author of the newsletter A View from the Cellar , weighs in today with his thoughts on Mayacamas Vineyards .

Jura Tasting
Chambers Street Wines held a Jura tasting in the beginning of March. Here are the wines we tasted: NV Tissot Crémant du Jura , $19 - still delish , a former Friday Night Bubbles contestant. Whites 2004 Montbourgeau L'Etoile Blanc , $21 - tastes like sherry, but better than any sherry I've had. They poured a sparkling wine, four reds, five whites, and a dessert wine. What a perfect way to explore these unique wines without having to shell out the $18 - 75 it would cost to try the bottles myself.
