Beat the Summer Heat with Cornas!
Who wants to drink rustic and earthy northern Rhône Syrah when it's very humid and 94 degrees outside? remembered my friend Peter telling me a little while ago that Syrah is very flexible and can work with dishes like this. You know that I'm joking. Heat and humidity be damned. Add salt here, and then a 28 oz.

Monteviejo Blend 2006 Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina
Made with a blend of 80% Malbec, 17% Syrah, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Merlot, very dark, and lush opaque blackberry colors, and plumy syrupy textures. Tannins, which are strong at first, allow for good aging but do settle down nicely to reveal a fruity and lush Malbec blend

Syrah: beyond the fruit bomb
While Merlot’s fall from grace can be traced to one line in the movie Sideways , the fall of Syrah has been more difficult to track. Even more broadly, it’s still a tough sell: producers and retailers have repeatedly told me that save for a few appellations in the Northern Rhone, the homeland of the grape, Syrah remains a sluggish category.

Gonon vs. Leeuwin: a Syrah - Shiraz shootout
In honor of Australia Day last week, and because I think syrah is most seasonally apt in the winter, I tried a Northern Rhone syrah against an Aussie shiraz. Okay, there was no shootout. Sort of a duel, but without the guns, wounds or Aaron Burr. Joseph. And the lighter alcohol was a relief from many a shiraz.

Cat Rotie Syrah California
Syrah is the only grape used to make the famous Rhône wines of Côte Rotie and Hermitage, but it also is the major component of most Rhône blends, this California red wine is a take on that famous French grape.
