Wine list insider: Bar Boulud
So with a new, recurring feature on this site, we aim to help you order wine like with aplomb and find an excellent deal.
1900 Broadway (between 63rd & 64th) New York, NY 10023

Paul Draper’s forty years and the making of Ridge Monte Bello
With Paul Draper, both live and on the tshirt from Terroir wine bar in New York City. Paul Draper is, without question, one of the world’s great winemakers. Even though he has every reason to be an egotistical blowhard, he remains humble and democratic in spirit, asking sincere questions of those around him and quick to point to his team as the reason for the winery’s success. It may sound absurd to think that a

Trader Joe’s to sell wine in New York–almost!
The economy’s downturn has left many a gap in the New York State budget. Governor Paterson has proposed some new ways to plug those gaps , such as difficult spending cuts as well as new taxes on private jets, furs and soda. This could really shake up New York wine retail by offering more convenience to consumers and increase wine sales overall; indeed, the governor estimates that it will bring in $150 million in revenues to the state .
It looks likely that wine will not escape unchanged.
The governor proposes raising the state taxes on wine.

Just for the tech of it: SD26 wine list goes digital
Peter May, who previously owned the traditional San Domenico, told the New York Times that with SD26 “We aim for the cutting edge.”
Although the inventory could be instantly updated, the wines probably don’t change too often: the server I spoke with in the front said that the 24 wines in the Enomatic machines have been there since the opening and will likely be there through the new year.

Why I Hate/Love New York
grew up here and I understand its appeal, but New York City makes me crazy sometimes. You have to love New York - this is a place where on this one block in one neighborhood, and on so many blocks in so many neighborhoods, you can enjoy eclectic wine and imaginative food in two different and equally vibrant settings. Maybe the moral of this story is this is New York - expect some attitude. I'm not going to sugar-coat it for you, folks. I

Some New York Wines
what about the rest of New York? Vintage is a wine store that sells only New York wines, and also some fancy foods. All in all - New York wine = YES! In August my wife and I took a short trip to the North Fork of Long Island to explore and to taste some wine. We stayed at this cute hotel that is a re-modeled '50s motor inn, we took nice walks around Greenport, had an amazing lunch at Jedediah Hawkin's Inn , and we had some very good wine.

Free wine tastings NYC - in Time Out New York
The cover story of Time Out New York this week is about cool free stuff happening around NYC. I’m briefly mentioned as a way of highlighting the fantastic free wine tastings that happen in New York.
Tags: New York Cit They really can be really a fun aspect of wine life in the city and are free because stores can’t (easily) charge for tastings on their premises with the off-premises retail license. Many stores have regular free tastings, check out my NYC wine shop map for my favorite stores.

Wine in New York food stores – an encore!
Have you ever been in a New York wine store and thought there was something missing? Indeed, the group opposing the reform, The Last Store on Main Street, claims it will shutter almost 40 percent of New York State’s 2,400 wine stores. While the New York laws are in many ways absurd, the best pro-consumer argument in support of them is that the there are so many great wine shops (particularly in and around the City). Maybe gourmet cheese? Gift bags?
