Wine of the Week: Cheval des Andes
Now the 2006 is composed of 60% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and that small but essential 5% Merlot, the color (or ‘robe’ as they say in French) was dark purple and intense, with a small violet/fushia meniscus. With its illustrious history and small production, Chateau Cheval Blanc was and still is accessible to only the privileged few.

Cepas de Familia Gimenez Riili Merlot 2004 Mendoza Argentina
From Lujan de Cuyo in the Upper Mendoza River Region along the Andean foothills, where great temperature variances between night and day make for a Merlot with intense aromas and good acidity. Medium bodied and ruby colored with warmer copper painted around the rim of the glass. making this very easy to drink.

But what if the subject ordered a glass of hipster wine, such as pineau d’aunis or Txakoli, or a back vintage something good?

Banfi CollePino Sangiovese & Merlot 2005 IGT
From Montalcino comes this Tuscan red, a blend of Sangiovese & Merlot and nice every day red wine. At $8 a bottle Banfi succeeds in producing a full-bodied inexpensive red with the character of some of it's older brothers from the region. This went very well with a simple pasta marinara with grated ricotta & pecorino cheese

Serafini & Vidotto “Phigaia” 2001, Veneto
This Italian Merlot/Cabernet blend is loaded with aromas of black currant and leather, a nice acidity, and a silky texture. Tags: Cabernet Sauvignon Fig and Olive merlot The finish is long and juicy. Had this by the glass at Fig & Olive in downtown (W 13 st) NYC at a Muscular Dystrophy charity event.
