Here are a few of my favorites: Channing Daughters 2007 Sculpture Garden 88% Merlot from the Sculpture Garden vineyard (the oldest on the South Fork, planted in 1982) and 12% Blaufrankisch from Sylvanus vineyard, aged in French and Slovenian oak barrels for twenty-two months. Jamesport Vineyards 2005 Melange de Trois Bordeaux blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. When Steve Bate drove to the North Fork of Long Island for the first time, he was surprised at the working farms and vineyards in operation there. Since then its rise in popularity is obvious

Of Bicyclettes, terroir, typicité: Over on HuffPo…
The Merlot that was supposedly used in the blend – the Merlot that makes, among other wines, Chateau Petrus – is not a traditional grape in the Languedoc either.
Over on HuffPo , there’s a piece up about the Red Bicyclette/faux pinot saga . Jacqueline Friedrich , author of the guide The Wines of France , posted this comment as a reply.

Zenato Merlot Delle Venezie 2005
This Italian merlot has aromas of ripe berries set against a toasted oak background, and smoked meats with a palate of blueberry pie and sour cherry and finally milk chocolate and vanilla. Winemaker notes: A noble red for aging, made with procedures appropriate to merlot fruit from the “delle Venezie” area. Paired with a beautiful veal milanese at Il Poeta... yum.
