Wine list insider: Bar Boulud
To accompany the restaurant’s extensive charcuterie menu, wine director Michael Madrigale runs an innovative program that focuses largely on wines from the Rhone and Burgundy. We all want to order wine like a pro at a restaurant. But apparently ordering wine off a wine list is an extremely pressure-filled situation for many people, ranking right up there with fear of public speaking and fear of grizzly bears.

Lafarge Bourgogne and Passetoutgrain 2007s
When I was speaking with Becky Wasserman recently, the Burgundy-based exporter of this and many other wines, she suggested to get to know a Burgundy producer by their Bourgogne rouge, a sort of house calling card for a relatively low entry point. Passetoutgrain is the rare red Burgundy that allows grapes other than pinot noir in the wine since it is a blend that includes gamay. I recently bought the 2007 Lafarge Bourgogne rouge ($30; find this wine ) and popped it open on a Friday evening for Mrs. Vino.

A Naples (Florida) Winelist Challenge
He said that he would prefer to drink either white or red Burgundy, but he would be open to other suggestions. A longtime reader contacted me the other day to say that he would be traveling in Florida, and would be having dinner with his wife at a restaurant in Naples. He wanted to know what I would drink if I were spending about $100.

How to Explore Burgundy?
I am starting to feel more comfortable as a consumer of Burgundy wine. These wines also happened to be imported by Rosenthal, an importer I trust, and are reasonably priced at Chambers Street (this link goes right to the White Burgundy price page), especially after the 10% mixed case discount. I have much more of a sense of what I am looking for in a wine and I have a bit more confidence now when evaluating the selection at a store.

Another White Stunner from 2005 Burgundy
I am finding that the un-oaked whites from the "lesser" regions of Burgundy are just fantastic in 2005. tasted another simply excellent 2005 un-oaked white Burgundy the other day, courtesy of the ever generous Deetrane. Girardin is one of the most important negociants in Burgundy, buying grapes from all over the Cote d'Or. That they are reasonably priced makes the whole thing happy for everyone. The two "lesser" regions I refer to are the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais, both south of the Cote de Beaune and north of Beaujolais.

A Fantastic 2005 Bourgogne
2005 Burgundy is nuts. I've basically accepted the fact that the bulk of my 05 Burgundy will be from the Cote de Beaune. And that is not 1er Cru folks, we're talking about humble village wine. I refuse to sit this out though, this 05 Burgundy craze. Honestly, if you see this wine and you're interested in dipping a toe into the 05 Burgundy pool, you should just buy a few bottles. Since there are several Prices for the top bottles are truly insane, and you're going to spend $50 just for village level wine from the Cote de Nuits. Even there, Volnay and Pommard

WBW # 39 Announced - Silver Burgundy
What do you think of when you hear "Burgundy?" There is great Burgundy wine to be had at those prices, and a great place to start is outside of the Gold Coast, a bit further south in what I like to think of as Silver Burgundy. And this is the theme for Wine Blogging Wednesday #39 - taste a bottle(s) of Silver Burgundy, wine from either the Côte Chalonnaise or the Mâconnais. Some of you are wondering "well why did Brooklynguy exclude Chablis and Beaujolais from his Silver Burgundy thing?" I think of endlessly beguiling and beautiful Pinot Noir, and also of Chardonnay - crystalline, tense, and rich.

2005 Bourgogne - a Few Favorites
2005 in Burgundy is one of those vintages in which all wines can be great. 2005 Domaine des Croix Bourgogne - I read about this one on Burgundy Report and bought a bottle based on that review. You hear over and over again that very little sorting was necessary, the fruit was almost uniformly perfect. Grapes were harvested without a lot of rot or other damage, even from plots that qualify only for the regional designation of Bourgogne, Côte de Beaune Villages, or Côte de Nuits Villages.

Three from Burgundy
Last night I had the distinct pleasure of tasting three Burgundies, one white and two red. had to rely on my "tasting memory" to try to understand the white wine, but comparing the reds offered me some clear insights about red wine in Burgundy. Tasting it next to the Vosne-Romanee gave me a much better sense of the depth that can be achieved in red Burgundies. I always enjoy tasting wines side by side, learning by comparing them. I

Value Priced Burgundy - an Update
I've been on a serious Burgundy kick for almost 6 months now, since before BrooklynLady and visited the region. According to my records in Cellar Tracker, Burgundy accounts for upwards of 25% of my wine consumption in 2007 (I'm not getting into actual numbers, because I don't want you to think that I'm some sort of booze-soaked sot, or something). read more about Burgundy and Pinot Noir than about anything else that is wine-related. Trying to identify my favorite under $25 Pinots has been an interesting exercise for me. Not because I've tried so many new Pinots from all over

My First 2005 Burgundy Bottles
The 2005 vintage in Burgundy is hyped in the same way as in Bordeaux -amazing, the vintage of the century (does that include the 1900's?). imagine that the wines will be prohibitively expensive and in Burgundy, quite rare. I chose these particular wines because we LOVED the 2001 Clos du Dessus when we we visited the Domaine during our recent Burgundy trip, and because we also loved the Pommard Les Noizons at Domaine Jean Lafouge . I I

More Exploring Burgundy: 2004 for Beginners
The following quote regarding the 2004 vintage in Burgundy is from Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book 2007 : In Burgundy it looks like a more mixed year than the merchants are saying. Part of my Burgundy exploration includes drinking wine, and part includes purchasing wine for cellaring. I tasted a regional 2004 that I liked a lot (Voillot Bourgogne Vieille Vignes), and a few village The whites are seductive; the reds looked equally so in the barrel, but as their early fruit drew back to reveal the underlying structure, it turned out that there was a vast difference between those reds with ripe tannins and those with hard, green tannins.
